Title: Question about using RIT Dye on stuff
Post by: Redline on July 28, 2010, 01:51 PM
Hey felles... I'm thinkin of using some Black RIT dye on a pair of NOS yellow Oakley 2 Grips.

Before I undertake this scary sounding process, I just wondered if the dye goes right through the rubber? ie. if ya cut through the grip after dying it, will it be solid colour all the way through?

Does it turn out a nice matt finish or can you tell the difference between real black and dyed black?

Thanks guys  :daumenhoch:

There has been a few threads about this, but I would say:

matt finish.

But the dye does not penetrate all the way through, rubber is coloured  before it is formed and because of this it cannot be altered.. My understanding is that it will absorb some of the colour but if you cut it or rub one area for long enough the original colour will come through.

Test it with a rubber brake block - wait for it to dry and then sand away - see what happens.  ;)

There's been mixed success trying to dye the rubber compound in Oakley's. Wait until you get a few more replies from folk with 1st hand experience on this thread before you jump in, you may end up with some grips for the bin....  :(

No black ones here John - but I've got a really nice set of yellow ones that I'll trade for your "fully-tried-and-tested-evenly-balanced-dyed-oakley2-grips-colour-match-perfect-photos-to-prove-it" ones when you are done  :2funny:

 :LolLolLolLol:

Just take the plunge mate - if it all goes t!ts up Sid will lend you his magic seat blackening pen   :LolLolLolLol:

Plus........

I wanna see your results before I take the plunge  :-[
