Title: Contemplating a DP Freestyler build
Post by: ThisBitterPill on August 02, 2010, 01:25 PM
Hey guys,

Having been inspired at the MK meet yesterday, I am toying with trying to build a replica of my childhood DP Freestyler....

I can't find the pics as yet (my wife is now looking for them!), but it was White circa '84 / '85 and I know it had the following:

White ACS Z rims with matching White Z Hubs
Tioga bars and Stem
Tioga 1 pce cranks
Gold SX  pedals
Blue Dia Compes
Tioga seat
Tange MX Headset (I think)

Hopefully when I find the old pics, you guys will be able to help me!

So my questions are....

1) Is it going to be do-able bearing in mind, most of the bikes I saw had the high-end stuff on them and my one had pretty basic bits...
are these 'cheaper bits' harder to find than the exotic stuff?

2) What sort of prices am I going to be looking at to do it?

3) Should I go for NOS bits where possible or is it ok to be-paint / re-chrome etc?

and finally....

4) Is it worth the blood, sweat and tears?

Cheers guys!

TBP aka Daz

 :)

PS The original now resides in a landfill site much to my regret!  :'(

I did what you want to do with my brother in laws bike last year - check out this thread

One of the most satisfying things I have ever done... I did get given the bike though .... jammy cnut  :smitten:

It wouldn't have happened without Firebird Steve and the good people of RADBMX and their encouragement, support... and sarcasm  >:D

As above, go for it  :daumenhoch:

The hardest parts to find out of your list will be a set of decent white z-rims and hubs. I recently built my old DP from bitd back up to how it looked when I first got it. The wheels and hubs were the hardest parts to find but it was well worth the wait  ;)

Sweet, sweet rides guys!   :D

I knew if I started asking questions on here, then it would only be a matter of time before I did it....

I'm just hoping I can tell what bits mine had from the little old pics (when I find them!)

I'm sure I'm going to be picking your brains!

How old are you now dude? I'm 39 in November and I try and ride my DP everyday ( just recovering from a broken collar bone mind ... bad landing  :buck2: ) and a DP really is the ONLY bike for me...

When is comes to building bikes and trying to find bits the only quote that matters is from Gene Wilder playing Willy Wonka...

"The suspense is terrible... I hope it lasts."

...get them pics up dude...  8)

Me again.....

Ok here are a couple of shots of me riding my DP way back when....I think it's 1985:

So this is the bike I am going to attempt to recreate....

I was quite surprised to see that I only had the rear brake!

So far I know the following:

DP Freestyler F&F
White ACS Z-Rims and Z-Hubs
Gold Shimano SXs
Tioga Stem

I need some help to try and identify the following (some of which I know are just going to be guesses):

Crank
Chainring
Seat
Seatpost
Bars
Seatclamp
Grips
Brake and Lever

I know the pics are pretty crappy, but here are some close-ups:

Thanks for any help!

OK so after chatting to Steve (Firebird) and some Googling / Reminiscing, I have come up with the following parts list:

The bike as pictured features:

DP Freestyler Frame - White
DP Freestyler Forks - White
Tange MX2 Headset 1"
Tioga / Tange BB
Tioga Task Force 1pc Crank - Chrome
Shimano SX Copy Pedals - Gold
ACS Z Rims - White
ACS Z Hubs - White
Tioga Comp III Tyres - Probably Copies / other
Tioga Bars
Tioga Task Force Stem - Blue with a sanded back to silver top
AME Round Grips - White
Dia Compe MX1000 Copy - Rear only - I think this was also Blue sanded back to silver
Dia Compe Tech 4 Copy Lever - Rear only - Blue
Dia Compe Cable - Rear only - White
Tioga Task Force Seatclamp - Dark Blue or Black (striped one)
Kashi Aero Copy Seat - Blue
Tioga Seatpost - Chrome

I know I didn't always run one brake, so I will probably fit a front one too and at some point I know also fitted a Suntour Headlock in Blue....

Now I just need to find all the bits! (and afford them!)

 ;D
