Title: Falcon Pro Beta 24 - metal plate inside steerer tube?
Post by: Jon The Bassist on August 23, 2010, 10:04 AM
We've got all the main parts we need to get this rideable now. One slight problem though, I found the stem wouldn't go all the way down in the steerer tube (about 3/4" of shaft still out). When I looked down the steerer tube there was what looked like a metal plate in there with a hole in the centre.

Is this normal, is it possible to remove it without too much hassle?

The bike would be rideable as it is cos we have some fairly low rise cruiser bars but it'd be nice to sort this if it's straight forward.

Maybe it's an old wedge that's jammed down it?

Good call - I didn't even consider that. I only had a really quick look at the time, maybe i could tap it out with a bar and a hammer? The bike is at my dad's so I can't check at the moment.

may be best to try tap it back up from the underside.
if it is a wedge then it will be tapered and you end up bulging out the steerer whacking it from the top.
steerers are somtimes thicker at the bottom or have burrs from drilling for the brake so it probably wont push down

Hmmm, it did look more like a piece meant to be there...
Greg, how did you go about chopping down your stem? It looks like it's only need an inch taking off.

Use a flex fighter

Use a flex fighter

I did think about that, and it's still an option. As it's a rider, and hopefully racer, I was aiming for the stem to be in all the way for best position and less flex generally.
