Title: is it F**ked ? can any one help !
Post by: BENDYCAT ELEVENTEEN on August 27, 2010, 07:20 PM
Was trying for the hundred time to shift the old renthal post in the Goose TS  - have nearly tried every thing - soaking it in vinegar - wd40 - coke - heat - cold
So the next thing was to drill a hole in the post (can always get another  ::)) then a bolt through it andhit with a hard plastic hammer - didn't shift at all  :tickedoff: then it shattered and now has totally F*ing P*ssed me off as there is only a little bit in there  ??? it must still go down for another 6 inches !!!

So how the F*&k do i get it out now ?

can anybody do it ?

can it be melted out ? drilled out ?

if i try to bang it back down - i think it won't go down far enough for a new post to fit !

please bloody help, as this is driving me nuts

cheers B  :10_2_12:

if its alloy then melt it with costic  or cut down it in 3 equal slices with a hacksaw blade

I think i'd take it to a local engineering machine shop and ask if they can drill it out for you.

I bet the hole through the post isnt big enough to get a hacksaw blade in is it? if it is, you could try to saw through the length of it, but it would take forever and you'd probably throw yourself under a bus instead of finishing it!!

Good luck with it anyway.

You have a case of electrollosis there i believe mate!

Thats where the alloy and steel react and semi fuze! remember seeing a bmw back in the late 80's early 90's drive with alloy wheels and no bolts to try and free a wheel of that had done this same thing!!

I would imagine that u need a pillar drill and some precise drilling to remove that !! heat would have helped a bit poss b4 it sheared of!

Costic soda as Dan says, then maybe get a large tap that fits the inner hole & try to turn it out  :daumenhoch:

i.d try the costic route

but another way is ,if your having a new finish on it is ,,drill a hole in the bottom bracket

then get a long bit of steel rod ,,,you  can get 6mm reinforcing bar ,,then twat the fooker with a hammer onto the bottom of the post

then reweld the hole up and get it finished

i'd use a pillar drill starting with a drill bit not much bigger than the hole in the post then going up one size at a time  :daumenhoch:

i got one out by using an airsaw with a long blade and cut 4 slots around post and it came out in 4 bits
but if all else fails i would drill it out so there is only a small bit of post left and remove the last bit soaing it in caustic
this would save any chance of drilling the seat tube ;)

it's a pain in the rectum, but there is no short-cut now. Caustic will work, but it's a awkward thing to get into a bucket of strong enough caustic. The sawing method works best if you can get the blade down the hole. I melted it away a bit with caustic and then used a boa saw to get it finished. Never again, i'd drill it at work first, but i wasn't working when i had this to do.
ahh well, hard work ahead.

what about a metal Dremel wheel and slice down where the slit is in the seat tube. That may loosen it to split it.

so just to ask those who have used caustic soda - if i make a tube to hold the soda in and around the seat tube - will it eat the frame (gonna be re-painted) will it melt the seat post all away after a time or are we hoping to loosen it - drill a small hole in the post and hook it out ?

I just want to check before drilling !

to those who sent pm's cheers - will get in touch when i find out what peeps say

i will not be defeated  >:(

cheers B  ;)

Im so glad i found this thread. I have been doing something similar to this for the last month. Been soaking the seat post hole in WD40 and the next step will be getting it drilled but i might have a go with the caustic soda. It must be an alloy seat post cause it has welded inside the post and i feel steel would not stick like this. Let another botchet job boy have a go and i found he had drilled a hole in the bottom bracket to get it out. Any idiot could see it had a cable run accros the bottom of the seat post so it could not be done that way.
Cheers guys.

A hot mix of caustic soda and water will munch through this aluminium post and shouldn't touch the alloy or steel frame.

Caustic.....Also good for your drains  ;)

Suprised heat did not break that seal....one being steel and the other alloy  ???
