Title: CW Cali Boulevard Resto *Pg 7 update 22/6/11 Pics Added *
Post by: Jamroll on October 18, 2010, 10:50 PM
OK,
I've got a few threads going on at the moment reference this project, i though it would be easier just to stick all under one roof  :daumenhoch:

I put a shout out in the wanted section for a CW Freestyler way back in August 2009, Emerbmx answered my call (thx Johan  :daumenhoch: ) The bike he had was a stickered a CW Flyer, wasn't exactley what i was after but these CW's don't seem to come up that often  ::)

Went upto London to collect ,The Frame, Forks and Bars were in a pretty good state, had no seat by this time, but the other bits were a little battered and bruised, Front Fork pegs were battered, Rear Frame Pegs had overspray on them from where the rims had been painted and the tyres where badly cracked
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ww308/jamroll/CW%20Cali%20Boulevard/OriginalCW.jpg)

She stayed in the garage in this state until a few weeks ago when i decided enough was enough so started stripping back the parts to see what could be used and wot couldn't for this build,
Stripped the frame back to its Raw state, still a little more to do with her before i can get polished up.

Need to get all this paint out
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ww308/jamroll/CW%20Cali%20Boulevard/P1010454.jpg)

Nice details on frame & Forks still
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ww308/jamroll/CW%20Cali%20Boulevard/P1010452.jpg)

Forks & Rear Dropouts are pretty good
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ww308/jamroll/CW%20Cali%20Boulevard/P1010457.jpg)

After doing a bit of homework found out that the frame number dictates that i has a Cali Boulevard not a flyer..fookin result  :)

Bars have a bit of pittin and surface rust but nothing too bad.

Rear Pegs have had a little attention from me and are beginning to get to a point where i can start polishing getting them ready for a rechrome,
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ww308/jamroll/CW%20Cali%20Boulevard/P1000100.jpg)

After putting up a recent thread on here about whether or not to get the frame, forks & bars chromed before having the powder put over the top the bike will be done chromed and then powdered (post on the left (Thx ED209 for sending some old bent posts down to SBD and thx SBD for turning them around so quick)
I've thought long and hard about this and though doing this is gonna cost me an arm and a leg & the F&F and bars will have to be polished to within and inch of there lives before going off to chrome I think it will be worth it, Bars will be stayin chrome  :daumenhoch:

This should be be heading down to Custom Metal Polishers in Portsmouth Wednesday this week and will be turned around in approx 3 weeks, emplained that i want the serial number and any other markins left well alone  :knuppel2:

When back probably off to Hockley Chromers along with a Tuff Neck Power Disc and some Araya 7X and hubs...

Keep you posted how this all works out.

Hutchman, I think your right. I do remember seeing a frame not too long ago that looks bloody similar to this one, not sure about the overall dimensions being the same, but I think the foot stand was almost identical....I'll have a hunt around for a pic  ::)

I've got one gathering dust under the bed,but has some nasty grinding on the rear end of the chain stays, remember being told it was where the standing platforms had been removed.

Thing is though - how much do you trust your local bike shop with your new frame after it's been through approximately £400 worth of resto work  ?  :-\

Think i'd be putting the bearing cups in myself maybe with the help of a mate if you need a spare set of hands in the process  ;)

Here's how I do it..........

1. Use a dremmel to clean the insides of the bottom bracket hanger of any overspray.
2. Pop the bearing cups in a food baggy and sit them in the freezer for a couple of hours.
3. Grease the bottom bracket hanger & the cups.
4. Give them a gentle tap with a rubber or wooden mallet to start them off.
5. Press them in using a home made press ( short length of 10mm threaded bar with some drilled thick plate and a couple of 10mm washers & nuts)

Simple  :)

Its not so much the money spent on the restoration of the f,f's and bars, though at close to £400 obviously it wouldbe an issue , its more the time and effort that has and will go into this...I've only ever built one other bike before this and that was pretty straight forward, this shouldn't really be any different....just a little more expensive!!!
Appreciate the offer of a hand when pressing the cups, but I'm down Pompey way dude...you up Manchester aint you???

well, no going back now :daumenhoch:
Bike is in with Custom Metal Polishers in Portsmouth for a mirror polish and chroming...back in 2 weeks    :smitten:
Place actual premises is a bit of a shithole but had some lovely bits around i could see that i may have found a decent place to get work done.
Got some araya 7x rims being polished  & chromed, along with a Tuf Neck Power Disc, Renthal Seat Post, and the Original CW rear pegs  ::)
Thinking bout getting the suzue hubs done as well....thoughts?

Bike in for mirror polish

Could you not just candy over the polished frame ? May not be quite as bling-a-ding-ding as the chrome underneath but surely better than silver powder underneath - especially if it's being professionally polished  :-\

Just a thought  :daumenhoch:

Spoke with the polishers yesterday, said that the forks and frame have come up a fookin treat but were have some issues with the bars gettin into the tight spots  :-\
They are sending the Frame and Forks off tomorrow (Monday) to be chromed but are holding back the bars a day to do a little more work on them :smitten:
Mind this only come about after i pointed out that this little puppy could get them a load of work off you lot if it looks the bollox  ;)
They're still tellin me should be all done and ready for collection Wednesday  8)
Pics up Wednesday Night then before being boxed and sent to Dan for the Candy Thursday.
Finished up gettin the rear pegs, rims (araya 7x), Pro Neck Stem and Renthal seat post Chromed as well....guess I may as well get the Hubs done also  ;D

Got to be honest....Ive been a little worried about the Custom Metal Polishers down in Pompey...were a little vague with figures for the work...One minute £250, Next Minute £200...Well I got a call today to say that all the bits will be ready for collection 2.00pm tomorrow  :daumenhoch: Wot i wasn't bankin on was that I need £385 to get my bits back   . Fook me!!
Now i asked for a definate price and my reciept say price required on it....Where do i stand here???

That is an ouch Al  :-\

Doubt there's much you can do without a written quote with a cheaper price written on it mate  :(

Have you seen the results ? Are you happy with the work ?

Title: Re: CW Cali Boulevard Resto *Updated...OUCH!!!!*
Post by: Jamroll on November 02, 2010, 11:33 PM
Haven't seen the work, will do tomorrow when i collect. Had a chance toy get over the shock now and if they give me a breakdown of where the costs have gone I'll be a little more understanding.
Its just pissed me off a little that I've been chasing them for 2 weeks about getting the price cemented and they call me when all the work is done and its to late to do anything about it.
They've got me over a barrel really, I've spoken to them about it and there going to try to trim it a bit...I asked wot we could do for cash andwas told that was the cash price
The guy has said that he's amazed by the work though  ::)
If it looks as good as he says i'll be a bit happier, i just all the detail is still there (logos, serial number etc)
Bits i had done.
Frame, Forks and bars, - Polish & Chrome
Renthal Post - Polish & Chrome
Pro Neck Stem - Chrome
Tuff Neck Power Disc - Polish & Chrome
Pegs - Polish & Chrome
Araya 7x Rims - Polosh & Chrome

Actually, putting it all there I've had a shit load done...price doesn't looks so bad  ???
I'll post Pics up tomorrow  :coolsmiley: :daumenhoch:

like you say.what can you do when the bastards have got your bits.
bad trick to pull though not giving you a price for deffo and then hitting you hard once they got ya parts.

All in all stunning, mate. However I would think that the not so perfect spots on frame and bars stem from not so perfect handling by the chromers --- and for the money you payed, I thinl you can expect perfect treatment. So I'd take frame and bars back and ask them to redo them, as they are clearly not chromed perfectly. Say you only now realised how bad some spots really are.

Lets see what the other guys ssay ....  :-\

For the money you've paid Al, I would not be completely satisfied and would be going back.

Did you get a proper receipt mate ?  ???

You must be gutted about that.  At that price, you should have had a better finish than that.  :'(  Did the chromers warn you that they would have problems in those tricky areas or did they say they everything would be fine?

It's always a gamble taking stuff to a chromer unless you know them or have had them recommended to you by someone in the know.  That's the only reason I thought the silver base coat + candy powder was the way to go.  I admire your dedication and I hope you get it sorted as the candy/chrome finish looked mint.   8)

Yeah got a hand written reciept, have spoken to them this morning, I basically told them that the finish just isn't up to standard for the show build finish I had requested initially, I don't think they were surprised to hear back from me to be honest, frame and bars going back to them on Wednesday next week  :-\
I was hoping to have this thing built by then ...pain in the arse all this, cause I guess they could sit on this for weeks now  :2gunsfiring_v1:

i think overall thats a 'pretty par for the course finish' by the chromers.the tricky bits do look pants but then find a radster whos been 100% happy with any of the chroming theyve had done.the price does seem rather steep but if theyve had to do loads more polishing than normal then thats a reasonable price. unfortunately i think total perfection is something that seems impossible to acheive by any chromer,it stilll remains the holy grail of bmx restoration :'(

This is what i don't understand though as i just don't remember a badly chromed frame back in the 80's. They did a great job then so why cant they do it now ????????
With an extra 25+ yrs of industry knowledge, i just can't fathom out why there are some real rough jobs around today. I'm not sayimg the frame above is rough by any amount of imagination, just obviously there are certainly parts that are up for discussion.
It just seems 25+ yrs on and we're taking backward steps rather than going forward.

Weird.  :idiot2: :idiot2:

All the tubes were polished and finished pre weld so the chrome was easier to polish post chroming. So once there welded and stripped the tubes ain't as detailed, so the polishing ain't as good  :-\

my honest opinion, it's all about how much heart you put into the job, the love of

restoring and seeing some frame thats 20-30 years old brought back to life and some

times looking better than it did when new gives me the biggest buzz time and time

again, it's all about finding that one plater who loves what you do, understands what

your after and knows himself what he should achieve, every frame i paint gets the best

i can do whether it's worth £100 or £1000, it makes no differance, i bet if the chrome

plater loved custom cars and was into them than your  car parts would look the b0llox,

So, the frame and bars are back in with the chromers....maybe i went in the conversation today a bit like a bull in a china shop but to be fair I'm pretty fooked off with all this now  :-\ On closer inspection in daylight I found a couple of area's on the down dube with no chrome on at all, and on the inside of the gusset i took a knife and was removing a shit load of polishing clay after the chroming had apparently been attempted there.
After a full on row with the geezer I've managed to talk him into having another go at the them....i dont know how good they'll be but i said I'll keep on coming back until  there right. Or give me my money back and I'll take to a chromers who can do the job  :2gunsfiring_v1:
Was going to leave the bars chrome...may have to consider options if i cant get them bang on...Was considering powdering black  :-\
 Thoughts please chaps

like dan says.
some of the old school chrome plating firms would never let stuff back out like that.
had a bit of pride in what they did.
now days its just about the speed and the cash.

see if there any better this time round.
just hope he dont come the pratt and make em even worse.

I think the bottom line is if the come back right next time the chromer gets a plug for good work and they get more chroming jobs from the forum.

But if they dont then come back good then they get the bad press on the forum and don get any repeat work. either way they know how dissapointed you are and rightly so and they are trying to sort it out :daumenhoch:

Hopefully you will have a real beauty in a few weeks :4_17_5:

If they screw up again and you manage to get some money back, why not give the f+f and bars to Dan so he can hit them with the silver base/candy red.  That option seemed like a no-brainer to me and would have been much better for your blood pressure/wallet.  The silver base/candy finish was really nice - obviously the candy/chrome looked better but you need flawless chrome for best results and it doesn't look like those chromers can give you that.

You might be able to find a nice set of NOS or survivor chrome CW freestyle bars on US eBay but you'd have to be patient.

There was a set of chrome CW freestyle bars on eBay.UK not long ago.  Not perfect but would have been easier to rechrome than your raw set.  Ended now so a moot point anyway.  :D

Oh yeah anyone got a spare wedge for a tuff neck stem as the fookers have lost mine  :tickedoff:

I might have one, will have a look in my mysterious box of bits later  :daumenhoch:

If the phantom photon can't sort you out PM Rooski as he makes these.

BTW the pro neck and tuf neck wedges are different.

A few good points have been made here.
Like Dan said, any good finish starts with the prep, whether it be paint, powder, nickel, chrome etc.
Like has also been said, it's easier to prep a frame for chrome before it's welded together.

Don't assume that all chrome plated frames BITD were perfect. The more philosophical may think, like most things we remember from the 80's, they probably seem better now than they probably were  :LolLolLolLol:

Generally, there are 2 types of chrome plating
1) hard chrome, which is more used for its hardness, wear resistance etc. This process gives a much thicker depth of plate, but it gives an ugly, uneven finish, which needs to be re-machined after plating.

2) bright chrome/show chrome, which is generally used for decorative purposes. This process gives the bright, blueish, shiny finish we all know and love. The downside is that this plating is only microns (millionths of a metre) deep.
Usually about 10-20 microns. A human hair is on average 100 microns

Be cautious of the promise of 'triple chrome'. The bright chrome process is usually a three stage process, after the pre-plating (de-grease, alkaline clean, acid etch)
The three stages are usually a copper strike, used to give better conductivity to the part, then a nickel stike, to give the silver colour, and then the final chrome dip.
So, don't think you are always getting three layers of chrome, I doubt if that ever really happens, let alone if it's even possible.

Bottom line, have a look at the item before it goes for final plating, 'cos what you have then, is generally what you will end up with after plating.

I might have been wrong in that the early pro neck and tuf neck may have been the same but on later models they are definitely different which you can see in the pic below.

Two pots mod stems with different wedges, the way the shaft is cut seems to dictate the wedge you need.

I don't think your wrong mate. As kuwahero said they look the same but on some the threads are slightly different. Some of the early tuf necks are different thread sizes to some of the later too but you can't see it by just looking at them. The threads are slightly thicker so one bolt won't fit through the other and the one that will rattles about like hell because the shaft is too wide for the bolt. The wedges look the same though. Andy Rooski on here has encountered all the in's and out's on these and really knows what he's doing.

so sorry to hear all about this mate - when i dropped of the cranks in the summer we talk about colours and the build

I think that you need to turn up with a couple of huge mates - the kind that look like they would tear a new r-sole for fun

the chromers don't seem to take you seriously and need a bit of reminding that things can change - just let them see it your way

I really hope you get it right or some money back

sorry to hear about your fook up dude

but it seems to be the same old story with chromers who have no idea how much these bikes mean to us

like dan said if the chromers into old school bmx ,then the job would be spot on

i had the same thing once ,and i had to wait six months  :crazy2:

and i knew a polisher who in the 80's just polished lengths of 531 tubing before it went back to be made into frames ,

i'v used butts of burnerworld for small parts and they are spot on ,he has some frames on his thread at the moment ,and they look nice  :daumenhoch:

This debacle is pretty shocking but sadly too common  :knuppel2: .

I think one of the key points here is that the company you went to have sub contracted the chrome work to someone else , I always speak to or see face to face the people that are doing the work for me ( if one company was doing prep then I'll collect when done and take to chromer myself )  . All too often communication which starts positive & well meaning is'nt passed down the line .

I had some shockers a couple of years ago using a third party ..... a pretty hard to find Redline fluted post came back with new chrome but smooth with no fluting left ! , hard to find Redline Proline V bars with no stamp left & smooth welds ........

We live & learn but sadly at our own expense more often than not , I hope it all works out for you  ;) .

Sorry to hear the horror stories  :knuppel2: I had my Curtis Frame, Forks and Bars done at Hockleys and was impressed with the finish, although it was my first restore and the frame was in a bad and way I may be looking at in in rose tinted glasses , anyhow my brother-in-law was over at the weekend and works at a foundry in the Midlands making lots of exotic things out of metal, I showed him my recent restored kids bike, told him all about the work that went into it and basically he was not that impressed with the finish, he's gonna put me in touch with who they use as he says they are the best in the business  !!!!! and when he spoke to them they have done BMX re-chrome's. I will get the details of him and let you know.  :daumenhoch:

OK,

Drive arm side of the frame look the absolute bollocks , and I'm well fookin chuffed with the colour  :daumenhoch:

Now I've been chattin to Dan about this on and off for the last couple of days as the Non Drive Arm Side unfortunatley didn't come out as well, we dont know if the frame got damaged in transit form the chromers to Dan or wot has happened but the rear triange, Foot Plate and from the BB to the gusset is peppered with wot look like rub marks / scratches under the Candy  :'(

The Forks are stunning and the bars are remainin chrome but the frame is Boxed up ready to go back to Dan tomorrow to be stripped back to chrome so we can take a look at wot the Marks are, I'm kinda hgoping they are just a little bit of tape residue or some scratches that will polish, who knows. Appreciate Dan doing this for me as he has said once the frame is sorted he'll do again FOC.  :4_17_5: Top Bloke is Dan, Thanks again Fella.

Mate, I was referring to the damage at the chromers or when it was in transit. If the scratches can't be felt on your fingertips and is on the chrome layer itself it should polish out nicely. Bit of a PITA but not impossible. Fingers crossed it is and it's easily rectified. ;)

Hope you can polish out the imperfections.  (were they caused by the courier on the journey from the chromers to SBD's?)

who knows it hard to tell, one thing i do regret is not calling Al on the day before i painted it, it just didnt seem

the quality show piece i was expecting and after reading all that Al has been through i really thought that he'd seen

it and was ok with the final chrome finish, we live and learn and i'm sure it will all be polished out, repainted and

Al gets his show piece :daumenhoch:

Sawzall and i just had a load of stuff done at Hampshire Electro platers in Southampton. It took 5 weeks and to say we're both happy is an understatement.  :4_17_5: :4_17_5:

We had our stuff back in 5 weeks aswell, just like they said.

Uploading pictures now for you.

They did about 3 or 4 sets of bars, a few sets of cranks and a seat clamp i think, they also stripped a couple of frames aswell.

Sawzall has used them a few times.

They rechromed his Hurricane BMX last year. Check out his me and my bikes.

I was expecting a massive bill just because of the amount we put in, obviously it wasn't all being chromed but i was well shocked with the overall bill. They were very very reasonable.  :4_17_5:

Been to see the frame today  ??? and to say that i feel for Al is a understatement  :'(

The whole thing will not polish out now  :-[   i can say that for sure - it's more on there now so it's going to need a re-chrome for sure - i would say that he gets it done and carry's it on forward  - as if it just gets a powder, it will be the "what would it of been like" frame

it's such a shame the money that was spent and lost, to having the wrong people touch it  ::)

keep going Al and battle the Demons as you will win  >:D

check yer soon mate - B  ;)

Al, this will be such a stunning bike once it's done, your patience and perseverence will prove that.

You could have quite easily said it's good but not perfect and started slapping parts on to get it built, but you didn't, you've stuck to your guns, waited and thrown more cash at it, and that commitment will pay off with the end result.

I would've bailed the project a long time ago, I have no will power.

Can't wait to see this completed though. :coolsmiley:

I can not say and i'm not putting anyone to blame - full stop

Al just wanted me to have a look at the frame and have a second opion - All i will say is it can not be saved and will have to be rechromed, as no ammount of polishing will save what i saw !

maybe we should start a fund to help out one of out fallen  :'(

Frame is battered, and nowt i can do about that  :-[
Anyhoo Its been boxed and has just been collected again to go back to Allen chrome  :uglystupid2:
Another £150 down the shitter   :2funny:

I was very very close to just gettin the whole fooking thing powded and be done with it, but the amount of money and time not to mention tears that has been put into this i couldn't do it....this is the last time though I've spoken to Allen Chroming again and they reckon the frame will be good for another chrome but thats it....on final roll of the dice, he's gonna try and do a quick turnaround on the frame so hopefully I'll have for MK11....we'll see  ::)

Bendy Dude, thanks for comin over to see me and puttin my right...I think i still had some grand illusions of being able to polish it  ;D

So 2 weeks after sending up i have the blighter back with me, 10 hours of polishing again and the chrome done again...considering how many times this thing has been chromed now I'm really really pleased with the finish, there is a little roughness around the rear dropouts where they couldn't get with the polishing wheel but nothing to bad, gonna send back to to Dan again on Monday....Dan gonna chuck a pair of Cotton Gloves in the box big fella for your big Paws, just to avoid finger prints  :LolLolLolLol:
I'll get some pics up tonite of the chromed up frame  :daumenhoch:

Glad the chrome is sorted and ready for powder.  Can't believe you want to ride it after spending SO MUCH of your hard-earned on it.  :crazy2:

I couldn't bring myself to do that - the thought of tightening a wheel in the dropouts and damaging that lovely powder would kill me.   :'(

You could buy an old school rider for a fraction of the money you've spent on the CW.   :)
