Just sorted out a deal this week for a prototype freestyle frame. It's not everyones cup of tea but this is a one off frame and a nice bit of British bmx history.
I'll post up more info and pictures when it arrives!!
Steve

It was given to the seller by Dave park after the factory closed. I've seen pictures of it and it's in a sorry state. Will need a trip to SBD I think!!

This frame must be so rare I just had to buy it, and get it on the web site. Really don't think I'll build it up as I've just sold of most of my parts now, won't be buying them in again.

Looking forward to seeing that Steve :daumenhoch:

Wicked 8) , chainstays & dropouts look thesame as the Freestyler we all know?
So whats the story behind this one.
Cool find. :daumenhoch:
-
Last week I got an email through the Dp web site, I guy said he had this frame, wasn't sure what it was, so I asked for some pictures and I could clearly see it was DP made. After speaking with him on the phone he told me he knew Dave Park and that Dave had given this frame to him after the factory closed. He has know idea what it is, now to me it looks like someone was playing around with some ideas. I would say it's a one off, never been built up and there's a very good reason for this. It would be impossible to fit the chain. The 2 inner curved tubes block the path of the freewheel and chainring. Now I think the frame would look much better if these 2 tubes weren't there, nice to see something different but it clearly doesn't work.
That's all I can say really, steve
-
I'll be honest Steve, my love for oldschool has been on the wane (unless you find some Delta II forks for me ::))
But finds like this & the 70's stuff that seem to be emerging keep me hooked.
Glad you got it. :daumenhoch:
-
Delta 2 forks, might have some of those for you. I'll look in the loft tomorrow
Cheers steve

wicked wicked wicked, I absolutely love it, the firebird's older sister >:D are you sure there would be no space for the chain? Looking at the first picture; I'd say you could be lucky. And as you're lucky anyway..... build that thing; boy, I can't wait :smitten:
-
I held up a chainring and spider and lining up where the freewheel would go you can't see the chainring, would have to build the bottom half up to be sure but as I'm not building it, who knows, lol
-
:-[ so it's goin to be an anchor then.... ::) Whatever, cool as fook :daumenhoch: well except for the miscunstructed bit lol ;D
-
Nice find well cool that, different :daumenhoch:
-
Very nice Steve :daumenhoch:
Now get it sorted :LolLolLolLol:
-
How weird is that Steve...
Looks very different you have got to be happy to have that in your collection :daumenhoch:
What a piece of history :4_17_5:
-
rad :daumenhoch:
-
I like the look of that, very funky :coolsmiley: . Shame it's not going to be built up but based on your comments about the chain alignment I can see why :daumenhoch:
-
Wonder what would have happens if this frame had have been worked on a little more, curved tubes removed, would it have gone into production? What would it have been called?
How many other frames were there in the factory that never saw the light of day?
I think only one person would know all the answers to that and sadly he's no longer with us.
Steve
-
Thats well cool, great piece of history. I think its even cooler that it doesn't actually work , "just thinking" they must of made it and thought that looks rad, then some bright spark comes along and says "how the fook you gonna get the chain on" LOL......
Saying that, I ride down at Durham skatepark occasionally and one of the youngins rides there without any chainring/sprocket/chain, he pretty damn good aswell, just drops in and he's away, maybe DP were thinking ahead of there time...lol, or they just arsed it up messing around with idea's ::)
Cool frame Steve, i think i'd be looking at away of getting a chain past those tubes without altering it, dunno how though ??? or running it as mentioned above. If you decide not to build it, please that frame to MK next year, got to see it in the flesh.
Awesome frame Steve..............

Ok, been playing around with the frame today.
Fitted a wheel into the dropouts, made up the BB but fitted the chainring 39t onto the back of the sugino spider and fitted them backwards onto the crank arm. This moves the chainring over enough to line up with the freewheel. Also if I added some washers to the hub that may also shift over the back end for more clearance. But we are still only talking about mm's its so tight. what's the smallest old school chainring freewheel set up? the 39t is almost rubbing the chainstays.

WOW score of the century steve :4_17_5:
love it love it love it :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

if you go for a flip/flop rear hub steve you could get 36/13 combo on-might give you enough clearance :-\
-
The biggest problem is the chain wheel, it has to be so far over towards the seat tube that there's no part available to do this. Then the chain wheel hits the chain stay. I've set it up and it does run but it looks bad
-
i bet it works! :D ..... c'mon .....piccies .....!
-
A standard set up doesn't work, trust me. That picture looks like there's a clear run but it's the camera angle. I'll set it up again this week and add some pictures.
-
Theres always something to tempt you back Steve ;)
That is one classic piece of history... even though its turning out to be an abortion >:D
The shapes in it look like it might have been some 'next' idea to keep up with the GT, Sport, Streetbeat way that things were going... but those curved bits are awful
Great find though ... would be great to see some pics of how far its off working when set up.
-
I'm not tempted back Ed, just wanted to see this frame for myself. Everything else is going, then this may also go.
Been speaking to Neil Park about this frame set, found out some interesting information on it.
-
Sad to hear you're jacking it all in Steve....You really helped me when I was planning my DP.... :-\

Not even just one little one?

quality find! if you did ever find someway to get in running Steve then you'd have one awesome bike :daumenhoch:

Come on, share with the group ;)
-
Mad bunch a tubes there Steve ;) , build it & they will come ...... ( not sure who but they will come ! ) :LolLolLolLol:
-
the information I have on this frame is more to do with who it belongs to rather than the history behind it. When things are sorted my end I'll let you know.
steve
-
Great find. I could happily look at that all day :coolsmiley:
-
Steve - this isn't related to the DP inventors comp that they held in Action Bike is it? the one where there was a Quarterpipe as the prize?
-

Now there's a thought........ ???
-
Which action bike was that in Ed, not sure I've seen it.
-
Ive geard of a Rebel invent a frame comp in Action Bike, not a DP.
Sweet frame, I love all these wacky later freestyle frames, extra tubes for the sake of it most of the time. It just shows how manufacturers were trying to catch a kids eye BITD by being a bit different (whether it worked or not).
-
wat about taking the chain off and putting it on another bike, would that work ?
-
Ive geard of a Rebel invent a frame comp in Action Bike, not a DP.
There was deffo a DP comp... it was to invent a freestyle innovation or some new gadget to be the next thing after the Potts Mod and spinner came out.
Prize was a DP made Quarter Pipe... can't tell you which on it was in as I sold my collection as a job lot to Jimmy P to fund my bike build... I will have a look at the picture I took off all the covers to see if I can spot it :daumenhoch:
-
By some strange quirk of fate... its the one with Mr Shohara and his yellow Performer...
"Win a Quarter Pipe in our DP inventors Comp"
...never saw who won :)
-
Never seen that before, need to update the web site with that. Anyone got a copy?
-
Thats scan was from S&M Alex... could try him Steve :daumenhoch:
-
I've got every copy of Action Bike Steve. I'll see if I can find it for you :daumenhoch:
-
That would be great Iain, thanks
I'll also send a picture to Brian Probert, he worked at Dp, see if he remembers the frame.
Ok, just sent him a text, see what he comes back with.
Right, it was made after he had left the company, I'll keep trying.
-
Just had a read through that issue. The competition really seems to be to design an add on accessory like the potts mod, frame stands etc, not a complete frame. Had a look through all the later issues and couldn't see anything about anyone winning the competition or any of the entries.
-
oh well, still interesting to see. do you think it would be ok for the web site Iain?
-
Interesting frame indeed, but fook me it is one ugly mofo. That dear Steve is the BMX equivalent of a 10 pint woman. If I drank 10 pints of Stella that would start looking really nice. :LolLolLolLol:
-
i used to know few peope who worked at the dp factory as me is off flint, sorrry old saying but it may take a while as i now live in lincolnshire  but tis a niceish frame :LolLolLolLol: its history what more can i say :daumenhoch:
-
Its certainly different that's for sure but a superb bit of history, be interested to see if you can fit a chainwheel to it though Steve lol. Keep us posted mate ;)
