afternoon peeps
got my haro bars back from SBD today :smitten:
they've been stripped of powder and are looking nice - just need a bit of buffing to bring out the shine and lose some of the 'swirliness'
from other posts I've seen that autosol is a favourite, don't have a polishing wheel but was thinking maybe one of these would be ok to use on an electric dril (it's a cordless makita thing I was given) maybe not the best option but better thna doing it by hand?

Let me know what you think - can either get this mop with some autosol for about £10 delivered, or just pick up a tube from halfrauds on way home and get rubbing
cheers (and thanks again Brett for persuading me to buy them from you :daumenhoch:)

Polishing raw bars ? ( you mention they've been stripped of powder ) .
-
I think they are chrome underneath :daumenhoch:
-
The bars are chrome but have marks int the Chome is what Griff said to me (Minor Whirls) :daumenhoch:

That makes more sense now :D
Peek on swirls I reckon , autosol maybe too heavy duty .
-
have a read on this thread - peek may be the way to go a autosol is too harsh as said above
tube of peek and a Goddards cloth will help buit read my finding first ;)

Hi Griff
You could go on flea bay and purchase a 100mm polishing wheel to attach to a drill ....link below........
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/POLISHING-BUFFING-WHEEL-MOP-100MM-DRILLS-TOOLS-/110641311648?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item19c2bc6fa0
Then go to Screwfix and purchase a Polish Bar (like a bar of soap), they do various grades soft to harsh.
Worked o.k for me on a seat post and some bars :)
Hope this helps.

thanks guys for all the advice, trouble is I'm not sure which advice to take now so thought it would probably be best if I just took some pics so you can see what they look like (I know you like looking at bike bits anyway :D)
i'm also trying not to buy any more stuff that doesn't work, after buying a tin of brasso and rubbing for nearly 3 hours I only managed to clean them up a bit - none of the swirly scratch marks have gone :(
here's what they look like with the flash off
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ad120/gr1ff1ngton/bmx/P1030941.jpg)
and here they are with the flash on - looks a bit worse tbh as it really highlights the scratches, but at least you can see what I'm trying to get rid of

bearing in mind I've never done polishing before and the value of the bars, what do you reckon I should do?
cheers
griff

They look like they were sanded before they were powdered mate, not sure if you can polish that out, might go through the chrome to the base plating.
Someone else will have more experience and better advice though
-
not going to polish that out sorry to say :-[
some hard work polishing may cover it a bit - but will never get it all out / polished down
looks like a sand down before powder - so any chance just to powder again ?

dunno whether they were sanded down - done by SBD originally I think and when I asked him how the chrome looked after stripping he said they were dull but should polish up - the flash pics do make it look worse
have to be chrome though but can't afford/justify a rechrome after what I've spent so far, if that's the case would have been cheaper to get some from b___gio :(
-
why not try polishing were the grips go to see the result? that way if it fooks up you can cover with the grips. on the other hand if its a good result just carry on and polish up all over :daumenhoch:
-
This could help, but not tried it myself...

worth a try ;)
-
Are you in the Midlands this Weekend Griff?, if you get anywhere near Leicester you can come and try on my mop, only got blue polish though, for general polishing I think.
Or just buy a bench grinder and polishing kit, dead useful for loads of stuff (justify it to Mrs Griff thus!)
That museum thread looks good
-
Black and brown are a harder polish - blue and pink are a softer ;)

no mate - was up last 2 weekends running so might not be up again until creation (and need to sort it before then!)
thanks though for the offer :daumenhoch:
as for getting my own - if I get my own workshop/garage then it might be a goer, but it's a bit of an investment for one set of bars! (and where we are right now there's no space for doing that stuff in the house ;D)
-
now just have a look at this :smitten:
got sent this pic tonight from the legend that is Sid1972 (sorry Si I know you said they weren't finished yet but I've been buzzing since I saw these)
I owe you bigtime mate - since I started trying to polish those scratches out have had a feeling of dread that they wouldn't come up shiny without forking out for a re-chrome
once I get these and the chainring back that's everything I need to finish my haro :smitten: should be ready for a first ride at creation I reckon
-
Excellent result Griff and well done to Sid the new resto legend of rad! :daumenhoch:
-
Nice Job Sid :daumenhoch: Nice to see the bars looking gleeming :smitten:
-
Nice one, didn't think they would turn out so nice as the last photos looked like they were keyed for painting but yeah, top stuff fella :daumenhoch: :smitten:

The bars were mint when I gave them to Dan, he did the right thing in prepping them for powder. As they where my bars at the time I can do what I like with them! :knuppel2: >:D

oo you are evil ;D
you'll be stripping NOS frames next ::)

;D was only pulling his leg - it all turned out nice anyway thanks to Sid's special powers :daumenhoch:
(still haven't found out how he did it..!)
-
;D was only pulling his leg
Fooking hilarious griff, you bought some used bars off someone who bought them from me. You have no grounds to take a swipe at me as I said before, my bars at the time so I could do anything I fooking like to them!!! :uglystupid2: :2gunsfiring_v1:
Are they not in great condition now without any major grief!?!?! :angrysoapbox:
-
If anyone you should be giving me grief. It is one of those things that know one could have predicted and thankfully it has all turned out well :daumenhoch:
-
wasn't trying to give anyone grief, but maybe my leg-pulling missed the mark
sorry robbo didn't mean to make you cross mate
