There not the neatest of welds and came off a curtis expert.
Anyone know if curtis made any CW bars or maybe more likely to be Rickman made?
I have a small Rickman brochure which shows cw's in their picture and the bars listed as - Pro (9 1/2" braced)
Medium (8 1/2" braced)
Mini (unbraced)
My ones measure 28 3/4" width x 9 1/2"rise.
Just thought they maybe made by one of these rather than many of the other copy brands?
Cheers Scott.
-
most likely to be Rebel or Peugeot Reynolds 531 bars :daumenhoch:
-
With a t45 sticker on the front they could be curtis as they brazed everything. Also could be rickman or rebel as rebel did a few types of bars.

Could be although I don;t know whether Curtis made CW stylee bars :-\ Maybe the Welsh Curtis Boi will pop in and proffer an opinion :daumenhoch:
-
Curtis braizing is normally neater than that but I recon they could still b :daumenhoch:
-
now thats weird ,,, i have a set just like this ,,that came on my curtis ,,stickered up curtis t45 ???
-
Yeah, maybe they did make cw style bars then,
Just that the welds are'nt really up to scratch for Curtis, Whats your welds like ?
-
whats makes me think these were og to the bike was the fact they was still in the stem and fitted to the bike rusted in the headtube
and they had some sort of gold paint all over them
like you say not realy curtis standard ,,

and i took a bit of the chrome off here to reveal the gold braze underneath
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v716/glenbett/IMG_0389.jpg)
and do yours have this ,,,,, like a kind of knurling at the stem area ,,,,these seem to of been sanded down at some time

-
No Knurling on my ones,
but they do look like there a very good match in shape , do yours measure the same as mine?
-
ill have to measure them later mate :daumenhoch:
-
i think paul has some ask him what his look like :2funny:
-
Yeah , i can see them ok.
Yours look the same in shape also, what about your measurements ? 28 3/4" wide and 9 1/2" rise?
Think we need to get to the bottom of this somehow! Who was making them...
-
How heavy r these bars compaired 2 a real pair ? I had a pair with similar welds bitd u in the midlands . Mine were steel not cromo so heavier .
-
Never seen CW style bars made buy Curtis.
-
Ive sent Curtis frames an e-mail today to see if i can jog their memory on these bars?
Wait and see what comes back! :)
-
i think they are rickman scott, they made cw copies bitd :daumenhoch: :Great_Britain:
-
I think they may be Rebel . Think thats right the ones made in the midlands ::)
-
steve, rebel only tig welded there bars/frames etc ;)
-
Yeah im thinking Rickman too,
Maybe they supplied Curtis ? Seems funny that a few survivor curtis's have turned up with these on.
I asked that in the e-mal i sent them today.
Just be nice to know their origin hey ? Cant sleeeeeeeep
-
Be good to find out
As mine have been at the bottom of my scrap pile for
Two years :LolLolLolLol:
-
Ok , just had a reply back from Curtis and it reads like this-
Hi scott ,
The bars you have are originall curtis pro bars for shure , Brian ( mr Curtis ) also made all the rickman frames which is why they are brazed as well .
I would love to see the old Rickman brochure you have .
Regards
Gary.
This is from Gary Woodhouse who i think works for Curtis.
-
So what does any one think of this?
I did'nt know that Rickman frames were made by Curtis ?
-
Didnt Rickman make bikes for other companies aswell ie MRD (post birmingham wheels)? So were these all Curtis frames?
Matt
-
Yeah i thought they did, but the e-mail says Rickman frames were made by curtis , so now im confused.
Maybe Curtis made all the Brazed frames ? Rickman, Mrd, B-wheels, Pr racing...
-
I read somewhere that the PR racing were Curtis made, cant remember where though...
Matt
-
i knew mine were curtis ,,,,, better get them out the ods and sods bin now :LolLolLolLol:
-
No fancy CNC mandrel benders used to make the bars that would account for the uneven sizing. Hand made in the UK in a little workshop with basic tools. :daumenhoch:

A bit of Curtis info here on Retro bike - http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php't=18003

Curtis made Rickman frames ???????????? Don't think so Scott.
Especially considering i spoke to one of the guys 2 months back that made the Rickman frames. He still brazes today but only Motorbike stuff and lives in Christchurch and yes Rickman made the MRD frames aswell. Incredibly there were only 2 people working on all the BMX stuff. I did have both their names as i needed some work done on my Rickman.
They were based in Stem lane in New Milton.
-
Ok , let's not shoot the messenger !
I dont know if this e-mail i had back from Gary is correct but its there for all to see , copied and pasted.
Ive sent him another e-mail regarding other brazed frames and who made them so lets wait to see what comes back on this one?
-
Yeah, that sounds more like it.
-
Rickman are still trading so you could drop them an email and see what they say- http://www.rickman-motorcycles.com/index.php

Curtis made Rickman frames ???????????? Don't think so Scott.
I think it's been misinterpreted somewhat, Reading the link to retrobike it says that Brian worked at Rickman so the email would suggest that he made all the Rickman frames while he was employed at Rickman ???
Would make sense to me ;)
Up to recently Paul i had both the Rickman frame builders names and none of those were Brian Curtis. I phoned one but he was too busy or just didn't want to do any work to my frame. The other i had no contact details for but they both still live local to New Milton.
It's all a mystery and as such Scott is still unsure of his bars.
-
Are these Curtis bar or not Curtis bar don't come up that much :( what gashead saying nick were are you
-
Now on the bay :P
