Post by: southern andy on February 21, 2011, 07:04 PM
What's the crack with these then ???????

You don't seem to see them on many builds or any builds at all as people are Araya and Ukai mad so when a set came up on the bay recently i thought i'd watch them

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370484863187&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

£207 and that's without postage.

So, are they the hens teeth to get hold of rarity wise or are people just mad.

I believe they're so sought after because they had mystical contraceptive qualities.   :crazy2:

They look to be a must on early builds in the US, even if Greg Hill and Rupe used them a bit later.
They share with Campa and other brands that perfume of italian high end exotica, while they were mounted on entry level bikes here, in France at least, as they were much cheaper than japanese stuff BITD.

I have a set somewhere for a next build, just for a change..

Me and my mate used to get Ambrosio rims from the bargin box at Ron Kitchin's in Harrogate. £2 a pair! We used to thrash them good and proper and they never let me down, they never tweaked or failed unlike a few 7X's that I killed . I still have a red pair from BITD.

The ribbed brake walls are a nice detail but the weld/seam isnt finished like on 7x's so they are generally seen a 'cheap rims' . However the hard anno rims are like rocking horse poo. I'm after a pair and Jeff Haney told me he had a NOS set, probably the ones that sold for £200+ on ebay. Sadly I cant affort them at the moment. As Mattdud said Eric Rupe ran them BITD as did Tommy Brackens on his stint at Torker.

Rob Stobart who rode for Profile in this country had a sweet set laced to to Profile Gyrolite hubs! Was always in aww of those wheels.

I have some on my Quadangle

Here's mine

Got these off Ebay UK last year for pennies. They were hard anno in gold. They were a twat to strip, took ages. Polished up nice though. I still need to work on one of the rims as some polish needs clearing from the grooves on the rim. I've become lazy though. They're laced to Arai hubs and are going on my Rickman Pro if i can be bothered to finish it. I've hit a few snags again.

 :LolLolLolLol:

I thought i told you about it Uncle Mark.  :-\

Had it powdered and i wasn't happy with the job Unc. Now currently being completely stripped of Powder in stages as it's a kin messy job. It'll be getting a wet spray now as in all honesty the powder covers the brazed welds.

 :'(

Might even start the other one instead of this one. Mk's around the corner  :LolLolLolLol:

I have Ambrosio rims fitted to my Bianchi Racing bike.   A bit heavy, and budget, but if theyre good enough for a £800 racer, then they must have some market credibility.

I remember bitd, that the alloy wheels Halfords used to sell when BMX was still in its early phase (Black and red Turbo era), were these.   Remember that big double page advert Halfords used to run?  When the plastic orange helmet was for sale, and a set of Suntour VX cranks would set you back £15.99 ?

The halfords wheels were not ambrosio. Similar to look at but not ambrosio. Can't remember the brand
