Having just managed to get shot of a Raleigh Team Aero Pro over the last couple of weeks, another showed up on the bay at a silly Buy It Now price - I left it a couple of hours to allow a Burner enthusiast to snap it up, but as they did not bother, I thought I would ???
I wonder if any of you guys in the know could give some advice on the Skyways on it - this is a pic of the one I just got shot of which had alloy hubbed Skyways both front and rear;

....and this is a pic of the one I have just got, which has an alloy hubbed rear only;

My question is - is the front a new type Skyway :-\
Also, the tyres are Mitsuboshi and the walls appear to be dirty white in colour, would these have simply lost their colour over the years or did Mitsuboshi do white wall comp III's?
....bit of an odd stem on it as well :-\

Thanks for your time :daumenhoch:

Is the bike from 1985? I'm sure it was '85 when Skyway phased out the alloy hub and a lot of bikes came equipped with an alloy rear hub and plastic front. Probably the original wheels the bike came with IMO.
A bit of a pain to sell on their own as people prefer either alloy or plastic pairs of wheels, not a mixture of both.
-
hi jase
you keep coming up with these tasty ap's. i must get one one day
the front wheel is an 80's looseball tuff so id say 1985+ think they did sets of alloy rear and placky front but sure someone on here will know for sure
as for the tyres that looks like the walls may have perished. if you have cleaned the bike skinwalled tyres can go white when wet but when they dry out will return to skin colour :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:
personally i like the rear alloy and plastic front as a lot of my bikes are 1985
-
::)
Thanks for that chaps :daumenhoch:.......at least the front is kind of era correct.
Just checked the underside of the BB - my last one had a date stamp on it, however this one does not so I can't put a year to it unfortunately :-\
-
looks sweet! deffo original tuffs from around 85.....and not cracks either as they tended to develope hairline cracks around the hub :daumenhoch:
-
What's the date on the frame?
-
Cheers Pickle ;)
Monkian - I can't seem to find a date on the frame :-\
-
I've got an 85 World Tour as the pic below, and also came with original alloy/plastic combo. kinda like it, its got character

when skyway brought the plastic hubs out in the mid 80s they had loads of alloy hubbbed rears left so for a while set came as alloy rear/plastic front.
i can remember selling them like this bitd in the bike shop i worked in :daumenhoch:
-
Cheers Pickle ;)
Monkian - I can't seem to find a date on the frame :-\
Is there a Serial No on the BB? ???
-
Thanks for that Andy :daumenhoch:
Monkian - strangely enough there is no stamp on the BB :-\
The TAP that I sold a couple of weeks back did have a date stamp on the BB - however this was a factory painted over chrome frame.
The one I have no is not chrome beneath......if this makes a difference :coolsmiley:??
-
Not sure about that. One for the burner boys ;)
While we're at it:
Were the non-stamped TAP frames still Tange made? ???
It's definitely an mid 80's front you got there :daumenhoch:
Changed over 84/85.
-
Ooops..... ::)......so it looks like I have bought a ringer :shocked: :'( ;D
Oh well, still worth the money I paid I suppose :daumenhoch:
-
Don't worry man. I'm sure it's sound :daumenhoch:
I think Raleigh might have just changed manufacturers at some point.
-
::)
....thats not like Raleigh to be inconsistent :shocked: :2funny:
-
Most likely a budget thing. Probably a cheaper supplier ::)
I see Zippy has answered this over on Rewind...
Raleigh moved away from Tange to Koisumi for production of the AP/TAP.
Think they made one or two others in the range as well.
Dave's MkII Custom Cromo 'Night' Burner is also Koisumi made :daumenhoch:
-
Jase check the rear dropouts. There were two sorts of team ap. The tange with the serial on the underneath of the BB and a Koisumi made frame which i believe the serial was on one of the rear dropouts, it would have the baseball sign with it.
Failing that it is most likely that the paint is to thick to see the serial on the bb and it's tange.
-
If its a Koizumi framed TAP then the Serial No. could take some uncovering.

Another tell-tale sign of a 'Koizumi' frame is the chain stay positioning...

Cheers Glynn - will do :daumenhoch:
-
David.
You certainly know you way around the rear end of a Burner :daumenhoch:
Thanks for the info - serial number exactly where you said it would be ;)
