Title: import tax and all that...
Post by: oldschoolace on February 26, 2011, 12:41 AM
Hi all, i know this has probably been asked before but what could i expect to pay in import taxes and stuff on a frame set that costs 100 quid and 50 quid to ship from Australia and/ or America

I know about the low value, gift, childs bike parts and other ideas. I'm just looking for a worse case scenario.

Cheers fellas  :daumenhoch:

It's a very random and varying deal, but it's supposed to be 10% import duty, then VAT at 20% on top of that.

It's not supposed to be on the shipping, just the value of the goods, but this is often fcuked up.

I'm still waiting on a frame from the states too, not sure what to expect from customs.  Does anyone know what happens when it reaches the UK?  Do customs call you direct or it gets delivered and you pay or what?  Tracking it on USPS, it left the states on the 12th but no sign yet..... ::)

They send you a nice letter asking for money and charge you £8 handling fee. On $500 frame it cost me about £100

Oh super, something to look forward to then!  After the sky high shipping costs and the legalized mugging of UK customs, you need a real bargain in the states to make it work.

Glad I didn't pay too much   ::)

Finally got my frame through from the states, with a letter asking for £28 import/handling charge.  Could've been worse, could've been better.  In Oz they don't pay import duty on anything up to $1000 in value.  We are being taken for a ride as usual (pun intended)
