Title: WTF went wrong(dying tuff's)!!!
Post by: Chromo Buzz on March 13, 2011, 06:52 PM
Hey there guy's, it started yesterday...,,had some time on me hands so i decided to dye some yellow(faded) tuffs i won off the bay a few months back. I followed the thread from this section(that was posted around the 27/1/11, bout dying yellow tuffs).

3 tins of multipurpose dylon dye, 2 tubs of 750g of salt & plenty of boiling water(covered) for 8hr's. Done the usual stiiring & changing over wheels from top to bottom, switched off wallpaper steamer before going to kip last night  & this is how they turned out in the morning :(

Any idea's what could've caused this, any advice would be much appreciated ;)

Here's the pic's from start to finish

Sorry to say it was the amount of dye used - i only ever say to use two tins for a bright and rich colour

time seemed fine

cover was fine but another blanket would keep more heat in

i don't know about the steamer as i have done my work in the bathroom

one salt bottle would have done i think

did you stir and rotate the mags

but all is not lost
Right you should be able to re- bleach the mags and suck out the colour and be able to start the process again

who's process did you use ? was it mine ?

let me know if you need any help

cheers B  ;)

That is the 1st time i have seen a yellow set come out that colour after a dip in dylon golden glow. Rit is SHiitt for sprucing up yellow tuffs because they come out orangey.........I don't mean that as a joke in light of what has happened here. Dylon is weaker than Rit and you usually get the desired effect because of that. Did you follow bendycats intructions? He is usually the man with the most experiance dying mags. Also quite a lot of guys on burnerwold have got experiance doing yellow mags durning their Tuff or Mag burner resto's.

As said above too much dye and you left them in waaaay too long  :(

When I did a set of yellow tuffs I only used 2 tins of dylon Golden Glow dye and only left them in for 30 minutes.

Hi Bendycat, yep i did use your thread that you replied to Hunterdubber's question back in late january this year(in this section), i dont blame you mate(i just read it back & realised i fooked up!! :uglystupid2:). I read the bit that said x3 on the dye, then didnt carry on reading where you said only 2 if lighter colour required.....doh! :idiot2:

Would you be able to tell me the procedure for bleaching them please ie:what ratio of bleach/water to use.........ta muchly, Buz :daumenhoch:

Just buy some bottles of thin bleach from Asda or Tesco and use it neat - last time I bought some it was only about 23p a bottle.

Just make sure you protect the alloy hubs with pleanty of grease or valsaline first as the bleach will eat away the alloy if you don't  :daumenhoch:

I'm guessing the concentration of the bleach is the key ? if you water it down too much to get coverage it will take longer,  or not work as well ? I'm all set to dunk my white Tuffs, would have done it at the weekend but forgot  :LolLolLolLol:

you can add a bit of water to the bleach to help it cover the mags

do both at the same time with rotation

use a better bleach - cheap lidl bleach don't do shit

once you see the colour faded enough - wash off in soapy cold water

You need to use the lemon yellow if you use Rit dye to do yellow tuffs, not the golden stuff  :daumenhoch:
