Title: are my bearings fooked?
Post by: pickle on March 28, 2011, 08:30 PM
Changed my chain and sprocket this evening and when I pedal backwards there's a horrible grinding noise, but it goes when you ride. They are old so could be knackered.....oh its the bb ones I'm on about.

how tight is your chain as it can sometimes cause it.

Is your rear freewheel/sprocket in good order?, crank bearings would be noisy in either direction

I loosened off the chain and it still does it, played around with spacers as I thought the chain alignment might be part of it but its made no difference. Take the chain off and they spin okay with no noise. The rear cassette is fine as I put it in another frame.

did you have to shorten the chain, If so have a look at the chain where you joined it. I've had it in the past where the chain link is tight and kink's :)
Not sure if that would make a noise or not

is the chain a wider one might be rubbing on one of the stays when its not under pressure
