My own rider preference is 44 or 45-16 anything else and i feel my legs are going like a hamster on a wheel, alternatives would be 25-9 36-11 46-17 with 165 - 180mm cranks

Get a 16T freewheel. 42:16 is just about rideable.

if you want to keep the 42 front [sounds nice] then drop your rear to a 14t or 15t this will give you a better ride

14t http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=15t+freewheel&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a#sclient=psy&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=YBL&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB%3Aofficial&biw=1366&bih=580&tbm=shop&source=hp&q=14t+freewheel&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=5db7123de0ebf018

15t http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=15t+freewheel&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a#sclient=psy&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=wCL&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB%3Aofficial&biw=1366&bih=580&tbm=shop&source=hp&q=15t+freewheel&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=5db7123de0ebf018

get some advice first about whether a 14t or 15t will fit your hub though as i dont know

I would be aiming for around 50-53 inch per crank, 17- 46 would be a nice gear for rolling around check out the link  :daumenhoch:

Drop the rear to 16t, 42-16 is a great all round gearing, I have always ran it. 42 - 17 would be spinny, ok in a park, but shat for a ride.
