Title: Polishing built wheels
Post by: ED209 on April 21, 2011, 10:16 PM
its a bitch to do so I never do it very well... but I'm always open to being shown the light.

Any tips on how to polish the hub / spokes / rims of a built allow wheel gratefully received  :smitten:

I've got a Peregrine 48 HP to sort out  8)

the first thing you should do is remove the spokes, it'll save you half the time rather than trying to do it when built.  >:D

spokes can be rubbed with 00 guage steel wool then finnished of with autosol the rims can be done on a buffer wheel along with the outside of the hub ,    its a real pain doing the spokes this way though ,    you will have to do the inside of the hub and between the spokes on the rim by hand or use a Dremmel type tool with a buffer wheel on it , i've done 1 36 spoke wheel this way once , never again ,   :uglystupid2: :uglystupid2:   to much fookin about and it will be twice as hard with a 48 ,   as everyone says easyest thing is strip it,  takes a couple of hours to strip polish and rebuild a wheel , if its a show bike job done, if its a rider just need to get it trued and tightened up at lbs if you cant do it yourself,  you'll get a better finnish stripping all the parts too

ed you could tape the spokes together ,then undo the all the nipples -then when you put wheel back together at least the all the spokes are still built into the hub   :daumenhoch:
done this myself +it saves a bit of time

Me too Ed, but you still need someone with skill to do the final tension :daumenhoch:
