Hi all - finally got hold of one of the most sexy things ever greated (ignoring Paris Hilton), a DP Freestyler:

I now need to prep it for coating white but, what do I need to do? I understand you can coat over good condition chrome but this does not apply for me :( So, what do I have to do? Get it back to 100% bare metal? If so, are there any tutorials online or in our archives?
Sorry for asking this question - there will be lots of threads on this subject but we cant search the archives.
Huge thanks for any replies..
Paul

are you sending it to SuperBikeDan to paint?
PM him for advice if so.
Dan does amazing paint jobs.... paint from Dan & decals from Firebird Steve and you have the best resto possible :4_17_5:
-
I would be sending Super Bike Dan a pm asking him the question then get him to do the work because he strives to achieve perfection and always achieves it :daumenhoch:

Yeah, SuperBikeDan. I got a quote off him the other day but, because it is his livelihood, I did not want to pester him for prep advice. Im now guessing this is acceptable so I will ask him the question. Obviously I will put him comments back into this thread for the benefit of others.
thanks guys,
Paul

Sex Shot! Did Dan chromo that puppy for you? If so, is Chrom'ing more expensive that traditional powder coating?
btw, am I being boring just wanting a white DP in this sort of vain:

They look great in White. Nice and Fresh
It is hard to choose between mags and spokes on them as well
Have a look at www.dpfirebird.co.uk (http://www.dpfirebird.co.uk)
In the galleries there are some great bikes on there to give you some inspiration :daumenhoch:
-
^^^ what they said - SBD is the don when it comes to powdercoating - look forward to seeing this built up (and in the end you got that pretty quick)
wheels look decent from the pics too :daumenhoch:
now watch whatever budget you had get blown and see how long it takes you to start thinking about the next one >:D

Yeah, wheels look new and they are "flanged" (word I just discovered from another thread but, to me, flanged Skyways represent the images I have from what a old school should look like).
And yep, I already have my next bike lined up :)

ride it the way it is its a survivor and looks sweet as :daumenhoch:
worry about sorting it in another 20 years, its made it this far looking that good :daumenhoch:
well done on that by the way :coolsmiley: ;)

x2 been thinking the same too :-\ measures can be taken to remove and clean up some of the rust ,would be a shame to powder if it can be sorted :daumenhoch: or at least try
-
Judging by Paul's pics the rust looks too major to save it... its his first resto lads! he wants it to look sick  my money says OFF TO DAN for some fresh powder... then you will have a bad bowy rider :daumenhoch:
Paul - they look sick in white without doubt... my one was done in a BMW bronze with a black tinted lacquer over the top. When Dan did it for me before he did a chrome base powder and a tinted lacquer over - both times have been amazing ( I only had it redone to try and get it closer to the Ni-bronze original colour )

Have to agree with these guys too. If it's getting ridden, remove the rust, sticker it up, lose the modern tyres and you're good to go. (Cliche time - they're only original once :D)
if it's a show-pony, then off to SBD with it. Simples. :coolsmiley:
-
Clean it' change the tyres and ride it all summer then of to Dan a and resto it over winter and start your second build with the bits you take off it - simples!
Sound like a familiar idea lads ??? Mmmm... 5 winters later eh? ;-)
-
Now i wounderd who beat me to that one!!!! i called the guy just after you bloody bargin mate well done you git lolololol
-
if it needs the chrome removing ,,,dan can get that sorted aswell :daumenhoch:
as said his work is the shit :4_17_5:

Yep, Dan can sort out the de chrome also, my GL freestyle Frame and Forks have been boxed up waiting to go to dans now for over a month, just waiting for the paypal to swell a bit more first :LolLolLolLol: so I can keep the missus happy "you have got to stop spending it on kids bikes"
Great find BTW, there seems to be a few DP's surfacing at the moment. :daumenhoch:
-
The chrome needs bead blasting or at least keying off for the powder to get a key otherwise it will flake off, the chrome Dan uses is a powder then a lacquer over the top to stop finger marks, actual chroming is a different animal altogether :daumenhoch:
