Title: spokes (f.a.o wheel builders)
Post by: kev-s on May 06, 2011, 04:40 PM
what spokes do you run? looking for answers from people who abuse their wheels i.e heavy landers, bike takes side impacts alot, general animals etc...

currently im running primo forged spokes and they are wank!

so looking to replace them ideally with dt swiss spokes but they are bloody expensive esp if u want black, so what alternatives are there?

anything apart from primo forged spokes,  ;) i'd also stay clear of double butted spokes, they may be lighter but snap easier.

Halo double butted 75p or less each (DT are double I think) but PG are 25p and good  :daumenhoch:

thats what i have now glen and im fed up of them snapping, esp since my spokes are yellow and i have no spare yellow ones so everytime one snaps i have to replace it with a stainless one :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

ive just spoken to george french and he recommends i go plain gauge due to i do alot of grinding and to go for dt swiss or odyessy spokes

now ive just measured my current primo spokes which are 184/185mm in length and laced 4 cross (four spoke holes between each of the two spokes which cross each other) but when i put my rim and hub into the pijin spoke length calculator it tells me i need 193mm spokes for 4 cross ??? ???

go with the length you already have and use long nipples, the spoke calculator may be right if you were to use short nipples.

thanks john, didnt think about the nipples :idiot2:

cheers glen but going for black/stainless this time round and ideally want dt swiss spokes

its mad those oddy spokes are £19.99 for 50 so i need 2 packs which is £40

the dt swiss plain gauge stainless steel spokes are £15 for 80

plus i also want gsport hex nipples at £22 for 50 so again i need 2 packs which is £44

so if i got the ody spokes and gsport nipples id be spending £88 on spokes and nipples

where as if i get the dt swiss spokes and nipples is only £60

which is still alot for spokes and nipples

lol hopefully if i use decent spokes and nipples this time around i wont have to worry about replacing them again

i just cant justify to myself to spend £60-£80 on spokes and nipples!!

although i want to :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:

maybe, my primo spokes were just the forged ones hence why i think they snap easily

this was the first time ive had primo spokes and so far ive had around 10 spokes snap in 18 months which isnt loads but ive never snapped more than 5 spokes before in 18+ years

maybe a set of wheels like the old peregrine manly 95 spoke wheels could be in order :LolLolLolLol:

lol @ tuffs :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:

not a big fan of hubguards (they just look big/bulky & not very nice in my eyes) but they could be the answer!

gonna have a good think about it
