Had this discussion a few times with a few people now and it's been suggested a few times in the ideas section as well.
Should we have a section just for recent builds ?
Now before those who don't like the idea say "oh yeah just what we need.... more sections" ::) just look at how quickly some awesome builds get dropped off page 1 of tech n resto. Glynn's Team Rampar for one example - a stunning build that took a long time to source the right parts for and get spot on and yet it's bumped off page 1 by a few "What do I use to polish my frame ?" "What's a tyre ?" type posts, now don't get me wrong tech n resto is the place for such questions for those in fear of the search button but should it really be at the expense of the builds ? :-\ Most people don't look past page 1 or 2 of tech n resto and then the builds are as good as gone :(
Yes there's the museum and me n my bikes but they are comment free zones for other members and a lot of people just post their build up in tech n resto not the museum or me n my bikes. And some members post builds in Old School Race and they often get overlooked by members who don't visit that section.
But hey it's a member's site so it's a member's decision - PLEASE VOTE :daumenhoch:

Great idea . :daumenhoch:
-
Yep, lets have it :daumenhoch:
-
good idea this 8)
-
I agree stuff drops off 2 early and peeps miss out on seeing some great bikes ;)
-
Voted for it John , good idea imo but you already knew that ;D
It should keep all the new builds together , instead of some being posted in 'old school race/ freestyle and 'chat' etc
-
great idea 8)
-
:daumenhoch:
-
Will it be split in sections?
Don't want to look at modern bikes or have to trawl through new school stuff.

Great idea John and I completely agree with Joff :daumenhoch:
Maybe if the year (or estimated year of manufacture etc) was put in the title it would save the need for sections ? :-\
-
Like it, you got my vote :daumenhoch:
-
A yes vote from moi :daumenhoch:
-
Yep needs it, i never know where to sling the topic, it's either chat, tech and resto or old school race bikes. Far too many choices. A designated area will solve that problem.
-
cracking idea, hope it happens :daumenhoch:

I love the new stuff, don't knock it till you've tried it... ;)
Threads take months to drop off page 1 in the new school sections so all's good there... :daumenhoch:
How about some sticky topics that will save a lot of regular questions
How to fit a bb/cranks
How to fit a headset
How to set up a brake
Why does no one like my Elina ul?
Why won't my 25 year old brake with an ancient elastic band brake cable stop my middle aged overweight body?.... ;D
Voted yes btw... :daumenhoch:
-
How about some sticky topics that will save a lot of regular questions
There's a whole sticky section at the top of the tech n resto page but by the looks of a lot of the topics in tech n resto not many people go in there :LolLolLolLol:

Just sort it out Fett . And name and shame the 1 person that's saying no in the vote :LolLolLolLol:

It was me...... I can't be @rsed setting it up now - sounds like loads of work :LolLolLolLol:
( kidding ;) )
-
Great idea. I notice they do this on ozbmx, it may be best to have it as a tech and restoration sub category like the stickies a bit like they have done as well. :coolsmiley:
Unlike the tech stickies the builds may get more activity.
-
Sounds like a 8) idea. I put my recent build in the Haro section as there was nowhere elso to put it.
You could section it into 10 year sections i.e 1980-1989, 1990 - 1999 year of manufacture etc. Just a suggestion :daumenhoch:
Ppl could then post them in the relevent place so you wouldn't have to traul through different generations
I vote yay though :coolsmiley:
-
If it gets sub categorised it's going to be just like another version of the museum but based on era rather than manufacturer - that would miss the point really and Glynn I hear you on the sub board of tech n resto but I genuinely believe many members don't even realise there are such things as sub boards and scroll straight past the tech n resto stickies sub board every time !
The idea is just to have a section with all 20 thread slots of the first page showing the latest 20 builds and on page 2 the previous 20 before that etc. - nothing else just bikes in order of when they were finished purely so they hang around for longer for more people to catch them before they roll off into the abyss........
After that there's the museum or "me n my bikes" if you want to catch up with a specific brand or member :)
-
Good idea , i voted :daumenhoch:
-
I like the idea John, even though it will mean more work for the mods!!!! ;)
-
My home internet is down so gooseberried up and can't vote, but a big yes from me ;-)
-
Betty I didn't knock New School.
Just don't want to trawl through a ton of new school bikes.
-
I thought this is what the museum is for ??? Most recent is at the top of the first page. Maybe work on the museum section and make it more dynamic. If peeps put their new builds in the museum, me and my bikes, tech/chat/freestyle/racing etc and bike of the month too, how many more places do we really need?
-
As I said before the museum and "me n my bikes" are comment free sections so members do not have the chance to comment on the build.
Posting new builds for comment in one dedicated area rather than tech/chat/freestyle/racing etc would actually reduce the number of places you would have to look in to see the latest builds :)
But it's up for the vote so lets see what people think over the next couple of weeks.
-
big yes from me, its great to see current styles and trends of old and new :daumenhoch:
-
Yep!! :daumenhoch:
-
this weekend has been a perfect example as to why a new build section is needed..5 new builds which have nearly gone off the page, only a bit of shameless self posting has kept them on view >:D
-
great idea....... another yes vote. :daumenhoch:
-
relly good idea - can't hurt to have this section 8)
museum is for the finish bike and the new section is for builds and more info than museum has ;)
standard question in tech get things pushed down and forgotten
run with it >:D
-
:daumenhoch:
-
top thought john :daumenhoch:
-
Gets my vote, too! :daumenhoch:
-
New builds can go in Bike of the month... where you can comment on them?
Or is BOTM not for 'lowly' builds.... what is a 'lowly' build?
When people ( like Robbo ) finish an Old School Freestyler they post it up in Old School Freestyle... theres enough sections for people to do that surely.
-
but they get put up, people comment, they are seen, new stuff comes in and they go down the list. it would be no different in a dedicated section. as for comments, they only move down when the comments stop. just how much smoke can you blow up someone's arse  :LolLolLolLol:
You could keep it real simple like some peeps do and post a link to the original thread in the museum and BOTM thread.
you can have to many sections on a forum, it gets messy and strung out.
new builds are nice, but they are only new for a very short time :-\

you can spend months scourcing , restoring parts, a lot of time and money and the finished bike gets shown for a couple of days..whats the point
get rid of another section..the jumble sale for instance not much really gets sold on there..and it is a BMX site, as has been said when they are in the tech'n'resto section loads of questions are asked and new builds are lost
-
I agree that you can have too many sections and that's why it's up for the vote rather than just adding it in straight away :)
But where should a recently finished build go without it ? Some chose Race / freestyle, others tech n resto, I've seen plenty posted in chat it' all over the place as it stands don't you think ? ???
It's not about blowing smoke up anyone's @rse as you put it J.T. - it's about people seeing the bikes - that is what the old school section of the site is about after all..... the bikes ??? Many people log on infrequently and have a quick look what's new and any new builds but they've already missed them............
Ed - comments often get removed in BOTM when the thread is cleaned up before voting mate, and lots of people don't enter BOTM :-\
Anyways........ it's something to be decided by the members so use your vote :)

your meant to build em for yourself and your own enjoyment. well at least that's why most do it. that's the point. ;)
-
well wouldnt the site be a great place if nobody bothered to show any of their bikes
-
voting closes june 7th pffft :LolLolLolLol:
-
but people do show their bikes and they do enjoy the site. :)

Ed, Diggler or Dubber will be along in a bit and take you up on that I'm sure

:LolLolLolLol:
All that old tat is the same anyway!
:P
:LolLolLolLol:

So how's it gonna work?
If a bike from last month gets more comnents it will push newer stuff back down and your back to were you started. :-\
-
Yep :daumenhoch:

Today I have also noticed the way the people viewing a particular thread ( at the top ) has changed.
Its now x members and y guests are viewing.
I have also noticed that the sections now have more threads in them.
This will keep the latest threads, in all sections, race, freestyle, t'n'r, chat, B.O.M and all the other sections on the first page for longer.
Is that enough for now ?
