To me theres nothing better than an SE Bike and if I could have any it would be an STR-1 then a JU-6, but seeing as those will never be in my price range or even for sale come to think of it it leaves me with this. A round top Ripper, always wanted one and its the one frame set that really floats my boat. Just need to get all the era correct goodies for her now :buck2:..

So that's made of mild steel not cro mo ? ??? :)
I always thought Pete said it was a loopy Quadangle on here , which would make it Cro-mo :)
As i understand it, This is called an STR-1 (Stu Thompsen Replica) when Stu Thompsen left SE in 81/82 they changed the looptail design and then called it a Quadangle therefore there was never a Looptail Quadangle.........................I think :daumenhoch:
-
There was the STR-1 prototype ( only 3 made and is there 1 left in existense)that everyone was raving about on Ebay for $18,000 last year which looks the same as an STR-1 / Loopy Quadangle but the two downtubes ran under the bb shell
then they did a Mild steel STR-1H ( H for hi tensile steel ) same style as the looptail Quadangle while Stu still raced for SE and changed to cro mo sometime before 1980 STR-1C ( Cro mo )
They changed the name to Quadangle when Stu stopped racing for SE , his contract ended at the very end of '79
So Technically any pre 1980 Quadangle is an STR-1 :)
but the frame stayed the same till they produced the reynolds Quadangle around 83
There you go Adam :)
Stu Thomsen raced for REDLINE from Jan 1st 1980 till dec 31 1983

not quite so,
the ju-6 came in both round and floval top tube versions.
the round tt pk came after the original floval tt pk but only had a short production run, it only came about because the factory ran out of the tt floval tubing (they were made in the same factory as race inc) so swapping in the tt was easy :daumenhoch:
when stocks of floval tt tubing became available again production reverted to the original floval design.

yes you are correct, but the JU-6 was floval and no gusset
and its a quad not an str 1
but nice round tube ripper there :'(

both are JU-6's :daumenhoch:
-
as for the str-1, some say 3 prototypes, some say 6, then a production run of 200 all in hi-tensile steel, most of which cracked/snapped, this problem along with stu-t leaving SE lead to the redesign and renaming of the frame to what we know as the looptail quad, this ran for a couple of years until the 531 quad came out :daumenhoch:

I had a bottle saved up but once I opened the lid I lost it :'(
This thread is churning out some seriously cool info on early SE kit, a big :daumenhoch: to those who really know their stuff...
Dubber, I have an era correct spec in mind but locating it is going to take some time and £££££££ as these things sure aint cheap :2funny: single pinch and I never even looked at the seat just slung it on :2funny:
Have no fear Paul I'll make it look the nuts, just for you :daumenhoch:

Building a 70's bike is the most fun ever as you have to start thinking away from BMX parts and more to converting road and track parts to your needs.

Lookin' good so far :daumenhoch: , what tyres are they ? ( reckon fat/thin C183's or Carlisle's would work mega ;) ) .
