Title: Rusty Gussett
Post by: Moza on June 11, 2011, 05:06 PM
Whats the best way to de rust inside a gussett ??? Ive got the rest of the frame rust free and we dont seem to have any Coke left :2funny: The gussett looks a tough one to do and I thought id ask on here as someone will have tackled one before. I was thinking gaffa take the sides then fill with oxalic acid  :daumenhoch:

get a plastic container just big enough so the gusset fits in then stand up frame and fill with hammerite rust

removing dip or oxilic acid and leave to soak,i usually use a small wire brush as well :daumenhoch:

on the wire brush front,i find a copper bristle brush is much kinder to chrome.

If your wanting to try the easy options 1st then try brown sauce.
Someone once posted that on here and I thought it was a wind up.
Vinegar works and brown sauce is vinegar based, I tried it and had success. The sauce doesn't just pee all over because it's thicker. 8)

Just be careful with the Oxalic Acid, mate..... :10_2_12:

Remember you will probably be mixing your own by dissolving powder in water, and thus the concentration will have a direct impact on how long you can leave it safely before marking the chrome. I have yet to find any decent guidance on dilution factors, timings etc. on the net.  :(

I did my DB with a mix a little too strong, and even after only an hour I had marked the chrome (well, nickel actually); it will discolour as the acid promotes oxidation of the component materials. I discovered that a lot of working at it with Peek and elbow grease removed the marks, and blinged everything up.  :daumenhoch:

Works wonders on the rust, though!

Finally, and at risk of being accused of being boring, remember you are working with aggressive chemicals and take appropriate measures (gloves, etc.). Avoid breathing the nasty fumes it will give off, too; they won't get you high, but will make you ill.

2 or 3 litre pop bottle, cut the top off, tip in one tub of brewers/winemakers citric acid, (50g about a quid from wilkinsons) add water (just a few cup fulls), jam front end of frame in the mix and leave overnight. Job done  :daumenhoch:

I'm not really into the coke method... you have to scrub loike fook and its well expensive.

There again... Tony swears by it... look how chuffed he is with his restored chrome...  :)

Totally your choice. Your only using because you can smear it on without it peeing all over.
HP in our house though :D
