Title: DP GL Freestyler restoration project "Now with some tweaks"
Post by: curtispro on July 02, 2011, 11:04 PM
Thought I would start a thread on my second build after getting back into this crazy sport after a 23 year lay off.

I got a shout from an old mate who had been looking at my pics of my Curtis build on face book, sent me a message saying he had this old BMX at his mums that he purchased in the early 90's to use to get to work and asked if I was interested in it, anyhow two crisp £20.00 notes changed hands and it was in the back of my van :coolsmiley:

This is how it arrived

Stripped it down and the chrome was just flaking off and was well past the survivor stage, so it was off to Superbikedan for some TLC and dan did what he does best and pulled of yet another fantastic job  :smitten:

He also powdered the brakes and then the writing was penned in with oil based paint

The wheels that came on the bike are unknown 48 spokes so as I am trying to build this in a budget  :LolLolLolLol: I stripped the back, gave them the oven pride treatment, did my first wheel build and will use them until the right pair comes along

I have been informed that these were laced up wrong ( wouldn't be able to get a pump on it) so they have been re laced again, and I have got it right now  :LolLolLolLol:

Brake cables through the frame and a few bits slapped on and this is her so far

Not sure about the White seat, I will either dye it red or change the grips to white, may even oven pride the rental post to match the bars, still undecided.

Looking super lovely so far..  I really like the red colour bottom bracket.  Where do people get these coloured brackets?  the onces I have bought just come in black or chrome..

When do you hope to have the bike complete?  Looks like you are almost there..

Oven pride works a treat getting anno off, just keep it in the bag and wear gloves and keep checking it, wash off with water and polish  :daumenhoch:

The bottom bracket is a ( dare I say it) new school eastern made from winstanleys, thanks to Terry ( londonhellboy ) for the heads up on BB  :daumenhoch:

That is lovely..  Has made me think about putting a white seat on my white Firebird.

The only thing Im not too keen on is the red seat post but, as you say, this is a temp build using a  few stolen parts..

But yeah, lovely..

Thanks for all the comments  :daumenhoch: I've  covered about 20 miles on it over the last couple of nights, wheelies like a dream and super light  :LolLolLolLol: decided to go with White grips, and chrome post and platform pedals as soon as I can, undecided about the wheels, red 7x would be good, but the black ones are growing on me. Will try the 48's that came on it when I get them trued up, but one of the rims is pitted and they are unbranded.

Regards

Jon

Title: Re: DP GL Freestyler restoration project "Now with some tweaks"
Post by: curtispro on July 23, 2011, 06:19 PM
Been having a little tweak as I needed to put the Arayas back on the other bike, so I pinched the white tuffs of Mrs Curtispro's bike to see if it was too much white or just right, changed the grips and seat post, its getting there now, waiting for a red seat post clamp and headset, possibly a one piece crank and some platform pedals, the turd is now starting to shine (sorry I couldn't help it )  :LolLolLolLol:

What do you think guys ?

Yes he's seen it and is quite impressed  :LolLolLolLol: but he obviously don't realise what he is looking at  ;D also I can't believe that the mrs has gone all snotty about me nicking her wheels, I thought the crappy old wheels I put on hers would be fine for a temp job, looks like I will have to get some more White tuffs  :LolLolLolLol:

Really really nice looking Firebird bro  :smitten: Super job done there  :coolsmiley:

Personally though, I would go with Red Ukai's, High Flange hubs in red anno OR, the same but with Araya's

Little too white for me  :-\

Or maybe some super Red Skyways dude  :coolsmiley:
