My latest project turned up today
Might need a little more work than anticipated to remove the rust
I am reluctant tbh to get it Re-chromed as I've heard it can be abit hit & miss
& could obviously be costly if the finish is not the best
If all else fails it will get powdered along with the bars
What is the crack with these Oxy / Vinegar baths
Also coke, foil, etc etc ?? :-\
Cheers..., Lee ;)

An oxy bath will eat away at the rust and leave a bare metal finish, it doesn't damage/affect the chrome at all.
-
What will I need exactly ??? Water & :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:

Oxalic acid, citric acid or phosphoric acid all do the job and all available on ebay.
I've used oxalic acid and had some great results, as Stidds says removes the rust and not the chrome and will get into all the nooks and crannies which coke and tin foil doesn't and it's messy to use, vinegar works but it stinks.
Not tried citric acid or phosphoric acid yet.
I use it outside as it gives off fumes and wear gloves as it will really irritate your skin.
This was 25g per 100ml, I also had good results using 250g to 5l

:daumenhoch: nice one me old mucker ;)

I use citric acid powder - mix with water - chuck in your bits - no nore rust :daumenhoch:
I wouldn't use vinegar on survivor chrome - it can "pickle" it and you can end up with a kind of wishy washy "stain" effect if you are not careful.
Vinegar is OK for removing rust on bare metals or galvanised bits like seat guts and BB's and harware etc. but I wouldn't use it on chrome.
I just stick with the citric acid powder for everything now though :daumenhoch:

I need to try something without the wait for stuff off internet
Ive had a quick clean off it but it looks pitted
Wanted to try something quick, but I can't find anywhere that sells citric / oxalic
My feeling is its gonna get powdered, it looks too far gone :(

Ok, been & bought some Citric Acid earlier
Will give it a go but as I've said, think it may be too far gone
& will probably end up getting powdered
Anyway here are some Before shots
Will post up Pics of the results if anything happens
I used 25g Citric to 1lt Water
See how that goes

I have a TA and the forks look just like yours. I was thinking of selling it on but I would be interested to see how your comes out. I am looking forward to see how this works
-
Just had a check on the F & F, looks as if it's shifted abit
Maybe need more Citric, not sure :-\
Oxalic may be better but again unsure
Think it's all far too gone TBH
Lee :(
-
ox acid will shift that but in my opinion them forks look like it has eaten through the chrome underneath and just got grown and grown.
-
Yeah think your right
Wanted to give it a try as I would have liked to keep it as it is
But give it go & see what happens
The chrome has gone in afew places on the frame aswell
Eh ho, that's what you get with 30yr old kids bikes I suppose :LolLolLolLol:
Lee :D
-
I would say they look a bit too far gone to be honest, even if you shift the rust there will be pitting underneath. Having said that sometimes you get a kind of scab of rust and the steel underneath comes up fine. With citric acid it helps if you scrub at the worst bits with a toothbrush every few hours if possible so the acid can do its stuff. I would say the ratio of powder to water you are using is ok if you give it time :daumenhoch:
Make sure the acid you are using is pure acid. Sometimes the stuff you get from brewery supllies shops have additives to help with the brewing, these dont help strip rust.
-
Nothing to report
I've had to remove from Citric bath as the wife wants her bathroom back :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:
As anticipated there is pitting to the chrome which is a shame
Some you win some you lose :'(
I would have really liked to have done this Chrome & Blue as mine was BITD
I'm getting it powdered now as I'm not taking the chance of a dodgy re-chrome as well as the expense
Decision time now oncolour scheme :-\

Nothing to report?
Let me help you out there;
It's rustier than a very rusty, rusty thing, from rusty'sville, Tennesey, and it WILL need blasting and powder coating. No amount of pricking about with 'condiment' will fix this piece of crap! There, did that help?
OH, that feels better!
