Title: Letters on numberplates....
Post by: Andy68 on September 02, 2011, 03:22 PM
Just sat in the sun reading a few old 80's mags on me last day off. Wot exactly did the letters stand for stuck on the plates of the race bikes, some form of classification I guess? For example a red letter 'U' can be seen in an action shot of the Yanky pro's giving it some stick.   ???

For some internatioanl races U was for USA, E was for England etc.

On regional plates you had the region code i.e. SC = South Central, NW = North West etc.

Everyday's a school day!! Ta  :daumenhoch:

Think I've seen 'x' on some.......??  ???

'X' added after a number is used to distinguish 2 people in a class with the same number, eg when a number 1 from 30-34 cruiser moves into 35-39 cruiser, where there already is a number 1.

So if I'm gonna pretend the GT was raced BITD at the YMCA Grimsby/Cleethorpes am I right in thinking that was part of the Humberside Heroes club??  What regional letter/s did they use? I love being the fik one of the class!!!  :crazy2:  My Dad used to take me to the local tracks most weekends (Grimsby, Grasby & Kirmington) to watch my heroes.

SC = South Central?

NBMXA went to numberplate background colours for each region.

gold = national

orange=West Midlands

Sorry to hijack this thread but is that guy on the falcon pro actually riding a falcon frame and also the guy in the second pic on the 'AS racing' frame, were they a manufacturer or are they rebranded brum wheels or rickman frames as they look similar?

The AS racing is an MRD frame, the forks could be JMC. They don't look like MRD. AS Racing.... Alan sopp racing ????

The Falcon looks like an Aero Pro Burner  frame or a Kuwi laserlite, certainly Tange made. The forks are Tioga.

ASR is deffo Alan Sopp  Racing, don't think they used any frame in particular though, just repainted and re-badged different models for the team.

Humberside Heroes was Grasby's club, YMCA was Grimsby and Cleethorpes B.M.X Club we were in UKBMX Eastern region (E), got loads of old Telegraph cuttings from back then if you Pm your name I'll see if your on any of them and drop copies of them in to Dave at Mainline for you, there's quite a few of us building up our old bikes round here, your black GT looks good who did your powder coating as I've built up my old GT cruiser, but at some point in the 90's when I was thinking of rebuilding it I had it power coated battle ship grey (twat) now it's either gonna be redone GT yellow or gloss black. Now the track at New Waltham's finished might have to get me cruiser down there, luckily I get BUPA with my job!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember going to a race at Grimsby, it was so wet they put straw down but you couldn't pedal through it so had to get off and run with your bike!
(well at least I think this was Grimsby? getting old sucks  :LolLolLolLol: )
