I was watching that, but did'nt make a bid. £195 is a good price, looks a nice one too.
Were the 84s K serials and not T ? :-\

Gutted!!! What year are the oval tube laserlites??
-
84's are K stamped.
83's are oval top and down tube.
84's have a very slight oval top tube and round down tube

Learn something new everyday.
I'm sure my brothers one in Tech & Resto is a late 83 made in November T3 serial . Oval top and down tubes, its got K stamping on the frame and Kuwahara on brake bridge, B/B and Made in Japan. So just before they did this on the 84s.

I remember when that 1st come up.
Unusual crossover characteristics. :coolsmiley:

Item number: 220867588288 wasnt a laserlite , no laserlites have a stamped downtube . i think it was a kuwahara survivor
-
The kz4 or kz 84 is the same frame for the survivor and the laserlite though isn't it?
The kz 4 had kuwahara stamped on the seat tube down one side, so did the 2nd edition nova and the supernova.
Those forks don't look right for the kz84/ kz4 though. They were a sort of diagonal loading with the k stamp on the dropout.
Could be a 2nd edition nova or a supernova though. You would have had to ask about tubing thickness, he does also say the tubing was round. As they were on the nova's

i think so but still technically not a lazerlite ;) i think thats why the guy just listed it as a kuwahara ...and not a laserlite ;) ...the forks on it did look like trx' in some shape or form so were right for a laserlite

The forks on the 84 laserlite didn't look anything like TRX.

84' fork dropouts on left, 83' fork dropouts on the right

didnt know that, thought they came with either round or oval trx...i thought those K stamped ones only came on the lower models , ie...survivor or the nova ?...ive had 19 laserlites over the years and ive never ever had one with those K forks

You must have owned kz3 laserlites.
The k stamped forks that appeared on KZ 4 laserlite, the survivor and the second edition nova were intended to be an improvement but are not correct for a kz3 that's all. It's just a date/era thing.

The seller was subwax.. He used to be a member on here.. He's still about.. I'll shoot him some questions and find out the story with it ???

sorry to raise an old topic from the depths... ive a Kuwahara made (K4C serial) frame thats embossed KUWAHARA MADE IN JAPAN on the BB , traditional brazed 3 holed dropouts...all tubes are round so far as I can tell...KUWAHARA stamped down the side of the seatpost and the K stamps on each of the frame dropouts , flat brake bridge also stamped KUWAHARA...what frame am I ?
I know these can be a pain to ID so was the TT lengths of the Novas, Lasers, Survivors etc all the same from year to year and whether they were Tange made or Kuwahara made ? Also with regards to the weights did they remain the same from year to year and again either Kuwahara made or Tange made. There surely must be some TT length and weight consistencies ?
-
i remember a mate of mine who raced got a laserlite bitd it had the teardrop tubeing,i also seem to remember looking at clint millers bike at one of the kellogs and that was the same, probably not any help but there you go :Great_Britain:

Try this link dude

Jamie's is a good site but I think some of the info is totally wrong , anyone have a round tubed kz84 and know they weight of the frame?
-
You either have a laserlite or a nova/ supernova.
As kuwahero said earlier about one tube being round and the other been ever so slightly oval. The tube are though, the same thickness.
On the nova/supernova one tube is noticeably thinner than the other.
So if your tubes are both chunky you have a kz4.
I have a kz4 and I sold a 2nd edition nova about 18 month ago. I had them both at the same time to compare.
Oh and the novas are trimolly not full chromolly.
-
ahhh, so from that point of view is it quite fair to say if any part of youre kuwahara frame is magnetic then its not a laserlite in any shape or form ? ...at the very least id assume its a way of weeding out the novas from the equation?
-
haha so whos got a magnetic laserlite then ? :-X
-
Laserlites are full chromolly . Chromolly is a steel based metal alloy and is magnetic due to the steel content in the equation.
The nova is Trimolly which means the main triangle of seat tube, down tube and top tube are chromolly but the rear end is mild steel. So all this frame would be magnetic too.
If the top tube is thinner than the down tube you have a nova.(both tubes are perfectly round)
If both down tube and top tube look the same thickness with one being slightly oval its a laserlite.
-
cool, i think that makes sense :daumenhoch:
-
And a supernova......? All tubes (and forks) round?
-
jeez this thread has made me dizzy,im more confused than ever now :D

as i said earlier regardless of the year the frames must come up with similar weights, ie a kz83 an kz84 must be of v similar weight ? surely all the models dont weigh the same due to their construction...there appears to be no genuine way whatsoever to ID them by their tubing alone. Ive read loads of info on loads of sites and there is no general rule of thumb else there wouldnt be some many ppl on forums asking ' what kuwie do i have ? ' . jamies site is a great site but theres contradictory info there and theres nada info there to ID youre model if doubt arises. surely TT lengths have go to be a give away as again the TT lengths across the models cant be the same .
