Title: Re: Can Z rim's be dyed..?? (UPDATED WITH PIC'S)
Post by: Chromo Buzz on October 25, 2011, 09:21 PM
Hey all,

Was just wondering if Z rims can be dyed like Tuff's..?? I have a pair of Z's (complete) coming over from across the pond, they are lavender  but the rim's seem to be extremely faded. Does anybody know what brand of dye is best?

I've looked on rit dye's website & i think you have to use a colour chart & get them to mix it up for you, is powdered dye best or liquid..??
Thanks in advance guy's for any advice you may be able to offer :daumenhoch:

Bendycat Eleventeen is the guy who will let ya know about the dye and stuff dude  :daumenhoch: Have you tried dylons ?

Any Nylon products can be dyed but it will only just penetrate the surface so the breaking surface will revert back to the colour they have faded to, with black marks from the pads, obviously  :LolLolLolLol: If your using them that is  ???

I've dyed some from very faded sun bleached blue to black and they came out great. . . Second time round . . . Dylon was complete rubbish and turned them brown?! Use RIT dye, it works a treat!

Yes they can be dyed like skyways

but there are things to remember

the surface aera on a skyway is a lot larger and so will take a certain amount of dye to volume of water to container used to dye in

z-rims are smaller and so need less water to cover and hence will also need less dye or they will go darker than wanted

you can always bleach back again / take off new dye and start again

you can also use a fixer, but if the wrong colour it will be harder to get off

so same as skyway dying but less of every thing  ;)

pm if stuck

re-the earlier posters link

im guessing the rit dye needs to be heated to get it to work
if i find a large enough cooking pot -is it possible to heat on the cooker ? and how easy is it doing this

Evening all,  the lavender Z's arrived from the States last week :)  They are really faded, but still in great shape.
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/zz80/buzzer1971/LavenderZs011.jpg)(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/zz80/buzzer1971/LavenderZs013.jpg)(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/zz80/buzzer1971/LavenderZs012.jpg)(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/zz80/buzzer1971/LavenderZs014.jpg)

I have since stripped them down & have washed them with hot water.scotchbrite(burgandy one) & hand cleanser(the stuff with grit in) similar to swarfega but not as coarse. I'm only half way thru the first rim at the mo but am well stoked with the result so far :smitten:, i will add some  pic's as soon as i have finished cleaning them :daumenhoch: I'm keeping these lavender so will possibly dye them, but first i may try the aqua blasting route as i'm gonna be getting a set of yellow steel hubbed Tuff 2's done soon.

I have a question fellow radster's......is it possible to buy white spokes & nipples?? Or will i need to spray them?
Once they're finished they'll be mounted on me Reflex 8)(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/zz80/buzzer1971/lavenderreflexpics009.jpg)
