Saw this for ns bikes on another forum, so, what were some trendy things to do on a mid school bike? I ask this as well as I wanna know some early 90's/late 80's ones for my bike. :daumenhoch:
-
Cut your bars RIGHT down. Grip flanges touching the cross bar :daumenhoch:
-
weld gussets any where they will go
-
Two tires on each wheel. Put a worn tire inside another one.
Reduce pinch flats, cover holes in a worn tire, and make sure the bike rolls really slow as well as increasing weight ;)
-
Get a 10mm wheel spindle, bend it a little in the middle, and then force it into the ends of your bars. As far down the bend as you can. This creates an internal brace to strengthen your (usually wafer thin Haro Knee saver) bars
-
Grind discs, 420 motorbike chains. Primo Dirtmonsters up front were super popular. Looong pegs...
Oh yeah, two tyres too (one inside t'other).
-
motorbike chains.
Yeah. That's a good one.
-
Red pedals on every bike, back wheel slammed, no front brake.
-
Thanks guys, don't think I'll do them on my bike though :LolLolLolLol:
-
Nearly forgot - in addition to no front brake, you should also run with no front teeth ;)
-
Peel all the decals off.
-
No front brake.
I don't think I got that memo. Same applies to my bike now! :LolLolLolLol:
-
Innovate :daumenhoch:
-
Coagulate :daumenhoch:
-
Ok here's what I used to do:
1) Don't worry about the weight
2) Cut bars so narrow, that you have bend the lever to be able to use it
3) Fit a gyro cover :)
4) Big fat seat (grip it with your knees!!)
5) Run a cut tube as a liner inside the tyre
6) Still don't worry about the weight
7) Pull hair out trying to get those 2 into 1 upper gyro pinch bolt things to work (for custom length cables)
8 ) Get a fishbone UFO
9) Throw away the fishbone UFO because it was shit, and put the gyro back on
10) Make dropout patterns and weld them over the rear drops for "double thickness"
11) Weld brake lugs on the back
12) Weld canti lugs on the front!! (they were popular at one time)
13) Fit some sort of disc on your "grind side" between the hub and the dropout (attached to spokes) to protect spokes
14) Paint bike - tip all your old 2k paint into one pot and make a dull colour
15) Ride the bike.
There was probably more but those are what spring to mind.
-
how about the little gyro covers? everyone went mental for those. I was, and still am, guilty of the rear brake only.
-
No front brake.

Yeah - good for trails (unless you barspin a lot), not so good park/ramp. Never got the brakeless idea either - tried it twice and sh1t meself both times. Was told it makes you 'feel' the bike more - don't know what they were on about, made me have to change me kecks :)
Still got a couple of gyro covers (think one of them is a Hammer one, the other a Base Brooklyn) - and :daumenhoch: on the Fishbone gyro's being crap.
Also - as been said - cut the bars down, but also cut em down so much you have to mount the brake lever under the crossbar :)
-

so true, lost count of how many kneesavers ive done that to after they have just started to bend :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:
-
Here's an early 90s one:
Get a GT screw on peg. Cut off a few inches of handlebar or seatpost and press it into the end of the peg (leave some sticking out). Then cut the end off another peg and bang that over the tube sticking out of the first peg. Home made extended pegs. For extra cool points use a silver peg with a black extension. Then go see if you can manage more than 5 feebles before the threads strip out!
-
Low bars seemed just as popular as narrow ones. All stems on decent bikes seemed to have a negative rise and if you had a clamp on the top side, you felt obliged to flip it upside down.
-
These are all interesting, thanks guys 8) :daumenhoch:
-
dirt front tyre - street rear
not just any bars cut to fook but powerlite 4pc ;D
-
Another one, inkeeping with the "overbuilding" of everything is seatclamps with as many bolts as possible. At least two, but perhaps even three.
When we all know, one is plenty.
There seemed to be a divide between early 90's and late 90's. In the former the term "freestyle" was thrown around a lot and bikes came with platforms on the seatstays, shortish frames with layback posts etc.. Then late 90's everything seemed obsessed in Dirt Jumping, so hefty oversize frames, normally with wishbone junctions (Hoffman Deebo, DK SOB, 2 Hip Pork, T1 Barcode etc). Also a switch happened from people wanting to run four pegs regardless of use, to 2 pegs. Gyros began to dissapear. People began to slam seats or point them towards the sky.
Around 98 there was a phase when BMX's had V-brakes. Such as odyssey A-brake.
-
Drilling out hubs & rims to fit 12 gauge spokes, or wheels laced twisted spoke pattern.
-
Late mid I guess, nasty "Y" or monocoque raceframes,MTB companies like Gary Fisher and Kona churning out some real monstrosities :daumenhoch:
-
was gonna say about using more more than one seatclamp but it is kinda mentioned in an earlier post about double clamps(haro.pergrine etc).
don't forget frame bolt on bashguards. a few different ones out there not just the bashguard chainrings.
fat rims- i remember my sabbath with those double wall thickness alex rims. all black primo tyres was another thing that everyone followed.
if using peregrine bars cutting off the lower end clamp and using the middle bar for the stem clamp- this was primarily flatlanders though.
-
cover EVERYTHING in stickers.
-
round our way if you could'nt afford a set of hp48's then a tuff on the back spoke up front ( opposit way round if you were Nottz area ;) ) and paint your bike with hammerite any color but gold that was not allowed :LolLolLolLol: cred gained for shelling out the extra wedge for smoothrite :daumenhoch:
also scumbag chainwheel for bb grind, two cheap steel chainwheels bolted together grind the teeth of one or use a motorbike chain ,to fit over both sets of teeth, won't fold in half if you snagged it on a bb grind :daumenhoch:
-
not just any bars cut to fook but powerlite 4pc ;D
I still run my Powerlite bars! Favourite bars ever, and would like another set!

I remember those Gary Fisher bikes. Wasn't one called the "pure bender" or something? Hahahaha
The Trek bikes were ok though - TJ Lavin used to rip on his.
-
I'm having a tuff up front and a peregrine on the rear on my sport :)

Nice :) Could I suggest then a tan-wall for the back and an all black tyre for the front ;)
-
Actually now you say it I might have a tom white wall tyre ;)
-
I remember everything on the jump/street bikes was added to make them stronger and more hardcore. This made these bikes so fooking heavy it was unreal! However the flatland boys were drilling holes in everything trying to get there bikes as light as possible. I find it quite amusing that some of the flatland initiative that was poo poo'ed back in the day is now classed as the industry bench mark across all forms of bmx.

using mtb seats and sometimes levers (only if they look cool) ;) Also using old 80s crap left over in bike shops, chainrings, grips tyres etc, again it had to look right pink and neon stuff just meant you had gay tendencies, spraying bikes black was only done by chavs who had nicked them for the most part, bikes also got to have been rewelded in at least one spot :LolLolLolLol:
-
Man Im loving this thread, Im getting the midschool horn real bad
-
Glad I started this thread, real interesting
-
fat seats,
writing on your frame,
g-sport hubs(maybe it was just sheffield, every fooker had them)
solid chainwheels,
welded on peg hangers,
14mm front axles,
primo perverts,
-
solid chainwheels,
Ah yeh!! Big 44 toothers too! Unless you were Rob Ridge. He used to run locking levers too . . . . . .
-
castillo's and moes bars,
-
Any more? :)

Funny thing is, at the time it was "new school" to me. Now it's "mid" school (still not sold on that title).
In 10 years time what will today's new school be?

I was thinking that the other day - we've technically run out of words for the next phase in bmx. Maybe new-school will become 'new-wave' bmx (fits due to the amount of skinny jeans you see now ;) ), don't really agree with the branding though :)
Maybe should rename the lot:
Old School = Too short
Mid School = Too heavy
New School = 80's Revival
-
Anything by Primo, in particular the Powerbite cranks, Hemorrhoid seat, Rod seatpost & Casket stem.

We are backing ourselves into a corner.
Like the current car numberplate system, which has already started to get meaningless.
My best guess is that the stupid name "midschool" will grow to include later years.
Time will tell.
Personally, I would call anything before 1990 oldschool, and after that it doesn't need a school.
-
The numberplate system is annoying, but it is easier to recognise than the older plates. I agree with the whole thing that only old school should be labelled, but if I had to class them it would be 88 as mid school.
Edited as it looked like I contradicted my self.
-
been riding since i was 9 years old and never quit. it'll be 30 years this xmas. it's always been just bmx to me.
-
Black wall tire on the front, tan wall on the rear.
Cutting the front off the plastic GT seats to make them shorter (but at the same time making the edge of them really sharp :crazy2:)

I nearly lost a b0llock once to that on the vert bowl at Slades Farm :)
-
Using a rubber band wrapped round your Odyssey Pitbull caliper, or even your crap U brake if the springs were knacked.
Also, down here in Devon... the TRUCK WHEEL was a popular one. Did nothing for your wheel... but a satellite ring that extra spokes laced into that ' floated' around the hub flange was the way to go... perhaps Danny or Alex may have some pics???

Great thread!
This is what I remember from the mid to late 90's, most of it already mentioned.
Anything primo or terrible 1.
dirt monster on the front, V monster on the rear.
Slam bars, redneck and pitchfork were the ultimate front end parts.
making grip "donuts" out of old mousepads.
Earth tone coloured frames (my new school ride is olive green :coolsmiley: )
super bent brake levers to suit cut down bars
fat chains, hell yeah sprocket grinds!
having "trail style"
suicide no handers, i havent seen one done for awhile.
tripple wall wheels
drop nose seat, with the front trimmed
-
Fancying the bird out of Evanescence.
And humming 'Going Under' in your head as you surf the concrete riding through the traffic wherever your from with the 3 last riders of the time.
Breadloaf seat gripped between your knees so you can suicide off walls.

I duct taped a bunch of foam to my skinny old school style seat.
It was like knee glue.
-
if you rode trails- having your handlebars so layed back the were on your top tube ;D
-
looks like my Taj is a full on midschool cliche :D
cut down slam bars, bent brake lever, stupidly long cable for gyro free barspins, primo v monsters on the super pros, 2 bolt preregrine seatclamp
mongoose kevlar saddle, flipped stem on the superforks......
-
need a nice primo seat on there ;D
-
Running purple ano parts on my race bikes was one I'd always do and for my freestyle bikes I'd always have atleast 2 Vision stickers and a couple of Poor Boy stickers situated somewhere on the frame/forks. I'd also run a Odyssey Gyro with Fishbone cables and also use my Kore Rusty pegs.
