Hi all - just spent 30 mins trying to work out how to spot a Tech 3 re-issue verus the original. One ebay seller (so hardly impartial) states that the re-issues have 2 flat headed rivets but the original has a round main rivet. I think the MX stamp on the arm is not very good quality on the re-issues but this is hard to see so, the question remains:
Is there a simply way to spot an original Tech 3 over the modern day re-issue?
Here are mine. I believe the one on the left is original (other one is polished and on bike), the other two are re-pop. Interestingly, my "original" has a flat smaller rivet and the re-pops dont have the second rivet (but this could have been removed). Also, the two re-pops dont have "Dia Compe" on them as someone mentions below.

mx stamp is poor quality and the bend/sweep is slightly out on the repop
-
from what i have seen it's the stamped MX bit
clean and clear well cut is original
MX looks like it have been stamped into dough is the reissue
-
On the new ones the rivets are different, the easiest difference to spot is they are both silver on the old ones the small one is annoed too, they are a different shape too, on the new ones the larger rivet is flatter and the smaller rivet is bigger and flatter.

I think the rule of thumb is... if it looks shit it's a re-pop one :daumenhoch:

Thanks all..
Looks like my findings were all there is too it:
New Tech 3s:
1) poor quality MX stamp on the lever
2) flattened rivets
3) looks sub-standard
So, not really an easy spot, especially if buying from on-line photos..
btw, forgot to say where I was coming from: I have two sliver sets, one nice and shiny but its apparent that this is because its a re-pop. The other set are dulled and a bit scuffed and are clearly original. I needed to decide on using the shiny ones or, putting the effort into the dull ones (for a Firebird build). Im going to put the effort in!!
thanks again, all..

Easy. The clamp bolt is different and has that odd 12mm nut on it that looks like a chainring bolt.
Oh, and they look like repops ;-D

dont the original tech 3's have dia comp stamped on them? the re issues dont...

Just posted pictures back at the top. My re-pops dont have "Dia-Compe" written on them so maybe this is the simple, sure-fire way to spot the imposters??

as mark said. the repops have dia compe stamped on em

These are the sure fire ways of telling-
1. The MX stamp on the reissue lever is poor quality,
2. The sweep of the reissue lever is not as upswept as an original DC Tech 3
3. The rivet that holds the lever in place on an original DC is not anodised,
4. If you shine a torch down the inside of the lever body of a genuine lever, there is a month and year date plus the word JAPAN stamped in there.
Hope that helps you :coolsmiley:

One is a classic the other looks like a bag of shit...from a mile off.

To be honest I thought this was what the thread was going to be about.
The repop levers from what I have seen in pics look a lot better than the copies at the top.
Pity they didn't do as good a job on the callipers.
-
I don't think the levers are that bad, the calipers are though.
