Title: Top Chroming
Post by: Retrodan72 on November 30, 2011, 10:07 AM
I've contacted Hockley a few times about having some work done but they take too long to reply, or not at all. :(

So, I needed some cranks doing for 2 builds I have on the go so got in touch with a guy called A.J. @ chromefix.co.uk last week and he said he could do the work and charged me £50 inc courier back to me - which I thought was reasonable enough. :daumenhoch:

They were recommended to me by Grant and Craig, after the top job they'd done on Craig's Hotheart. :smitten:

I sent them both off on Thursday and 6 days later, the guy from Fed-Ex knocked on the door with my rechromed cranks. :)

I think they've done a quality job and would seriously recommend them.

I made a point on the phone of mentioning the threads and stamping, they've stuck to the required spec, what more can you ask for?? :daumenhoch:

As soon as I saw the pics I thought "oh fook, they've chromed the threads"......

If you can get your BB back on though Dan that is a decent job and seriously quick turn-around :daumenhoch:

Did they strip the original finish off as well? I have a set of scruffy 401's that will need doing eventually, so I was begining to think about getting them done ???

They weren't horrendous granted but, they weren't nice enough for me and certainly couldn't have polished them up. :daumenhoch:

O.K got my bits back today(bars, chainring and suntour xc-II cages),happy to report that the finish is bloody fantastic,It's almost too shiny,It's putting the OG chrome on my nos frame and forks to shame. They got rid of a nasty ding in the bars as requested, even I struggled to tell where it was!The company i used specialise in aviation electroplating, they are not cheap but being a 10 minute drive from my house and being able to take the bits there and specify what i wanted i think is priceless.Thoroughly proffessional and nice to deal with they know what is required for show bikes. They quoted me a 7-10 day turnaround and stuck to it.I would highly recommend and would use them again :daumenhoch:

I think it's important for us to give the names of decent firms that undertake decent work, i'm well happy with my cranks so will use again.

Put a pic up of your stuff if you get a chance. :daumenhoch:

I agree totally with you here Darren, the important thing is the finish. I saw the job done on Craig's Hotheart and that was good enough for me. Hockley are slow enough to reply to messages if at all, that's why I don't use them.

I've sent 2 Tange bottom brackets down to these guys this week (Monday), basically as I was so happy with the cranks they did for me.  :smitten:

The way they quote their jobs though is mental  :crazy2: it was so difficult trying to explain the parts I wanted doing, and how I wanted them that the guy there started to get a bit arsey and said, just send me some pics. Knowing how they don't ever reply to their e-mails, I interjected saying, how about I just send them 1st Class then phone up tomorrow for a price. ???

This was where I slipped up, too keen to finish my build, I sent them, phoned back next day to a guy saying we haven't worked out a quote, we'll call you back. I tried calling them yesterday, same response. Just got through to them now, eventually, for him to tell me it will cost me £35 , it's a minimum charge apparantly.

So what could I say, just send them back to me?? Instead I just said, carry on, i'll send the cash down recorded.  :idiot2:

I guess i'm just used to getting work done by Dan, Del and Steve on here at a good price without any fuss. :4_17_5:

At least i'll have 2 minty bottom brackets and my builds can still go ahead, I won't be sending anymore small parts to Chromefix.co.uk though. :(

To be fair most finishing companys have a minimum charge policy, ours for coating is £50 atm, tell them to wait and send them something else as well to try and cover the minimum charge, but like you say if its a top job worth paying that bit extra.

Ah, that's fair enough, i'll let them go with it, as the cranks they did were amazing, I paid nothing really for the BB's tbf, about 14 for both inc postage. :daumenhoch:
