How to ( From GlobalFlat ) on how to do the threaded to threadless conversion to make 1 1/8 forks fit a 1" frame :daumenhoch:
http://www.global-flat.com/smf/index.php'topic=28925.0
Thanks to James Voivod for the link :daumenhoch:
DiscoStu's advice...
"Yes I have just done my 92 master. I used the cups from a new beartrap 2 headset. I then sorted through my bits box and managed to find some old 1"1/8th aheadset parts with bearings and crowns that fitted into the cups without any machining. If you don't have any 1"1/8 spare headsets buy a Savage 1"1/8th from Dave at the rad bmx shop for just under £9. The top bearing and seals and bearing tapered crown will fit without any problems. The bottom bearing race will fit into the cup if it's pressed in place but won't move around freely. I took the bottom cup and bearing down to my local engineering firm and they popped it in the lathe and took a thou off. The bearing spun nice and free. It cost a fiver.
All in all this is not a cheap conversion.
1" Beartrap 2 from eBay around £23-£28 from eBay
Savage 1"1/8th headset from rad bmx shop for £9
Engineering costs to machine the Lower cup £5
All in around £30. Then a different stem and forks.
But it won't come loose like the threaded ones! So well worth it for a rider!"

There's a few ways of doing this, just watch which headset cups You use as some of them won't go over the 1 1/8 steerer. ED I've got some 1" threadless forks, a heavy duty 1" aheadset & a shim to use a 1 1/8 stem if You want to go that way :daumenhoch:
-
cool that, but why? I havent adjusted my 1" beartrap since I installed it on my Holmes and my Challenger has raced for 3 years with hardly any adjustment to its 1" beartrap, they both have the seatclamp style headlocks.

Like we chatted about last night Ed, this is my next LLP innovation plannned for my Badlander after the "current" development is sorted :LolLolLolLol:

it more about running a newer type stem on threadless forls than the headset Si - just trying to keep one foot in the past with an eye on the future  or the other way round ::)

Ed just give in and buy a new school bike.... >:D

As you can see I'm getting quite good with these conversions. ;)

just got my Mirra 540 air back after Yodel ( NEVER USE YODEL ) lost it trying to deliver it to Wales so the guy on ebay cancelled it then they tried to return it to me then sent it back to Wales... TWICE.
MUPPETS.
Anyways... I have some nice Haro 1 1/8 forks now to try on my Sport... will post up pics of the process when Keith gets time to do it :LolLolLolLol:

Ooh. I'm looking forward to this ed. just get together as many old headsets as possible and see what bearings will fit into the cups. You can find out what will work without even fitting it to the bike. :daumenhoch:
-
dunnit - worked a treat - pics & thread to follow :)
-
Well done ed. I will look out for the thread. It's a really easy conversion to do. Are you going to put all the info into one thread then sticky it? :daumenhoch:
-
This maybe a stupid question but...
If your 1 1/8th fork stem fits into the 1 inch cups already attached to your frame, do you need to buy a Beartrap headset?
???
