Title: Getting an 'aluminum' look with a rattle can
Post by: ED209 on January 23, 2012, 08:57 AM: Anyone done this? I was gonna use a chrome spray that then dulls down when its lacquered.

Maybe rub the raw paint down with a cloth before the lacquer? anyone got any better methods/ paints to get an alloy look?

Post by: sid1972 on January 23, 2012, 05:17 PM: It can be done, spray it first in a good quality silver paint, not halfords shxt. Go to a paint supplier that mixes aerosol's etc.

Once it has gone off/hard, give it a good couple of days. Use one of those sanding blocks (black the smooth ones for light sanding) and gently drag it along the surface. The key is to go in all one direction (not backwards and forwards) and try not to go over the same area twice.

Post by: john4130 on January 24, 2012, 05:45 PM: i tried it with chrome spray and then sanded, it just turned dark grey and looked shit. i've been thinking of trying another way, i use something called venture clad at work. it's a thin aluminium sheet with a sticky back and much stronger than tin foil so it's a slight improvement from lennys idea. :D

Post by: Skid on January 24, 2012, 07:03 PM: You can buy Aluminium finish spray paint, as well as Chrome. One is shiny (chrome), the other is matt (Ali). They usually sit side by side at your local car parts shop. A lot easier than buying Chrome and sanding the fooker down.

You might have to do just that if the paint you buy reacts with the paint on the frame. Why not go back to bare metal, polish up the metal (be that steel or alloy) and clearcoat that. Proper industrial. 8)
