Title: 1985 Skyway Streetbeat - Updated 14/02/12
Post by: Retrodan72 on January 24, 2012, 07:08 PM
Ok a few of you know where i'm going with this, and let's be honest, it's not the first time one has been built like this - but I don't care, I always promised i'd build one one day. :daumenhoch:

I got this frameset off the Bay for £165 posted, I was so lucky, my winning bid was only the 2nd one it had, I couldn't understand it but won't complain. :P

The paint job on it was nice and to some peoples taste...

...but not mine, there was only one way I was going with this... ::)

So, 2 weeks ago it went off to Superbike Dan's, and it arrived back today. To say Dan's done a top job would be a complete understatement, the pics I took off my phone in our kitchen simply don't do it justice, and i'm not just saying this as Dan will read this, it's a stunner. :coolsmiley: :coolsmiley: :coolsmiley: :daumenhoch:

I got this frameset off the Bay for £165 posted, I was so lucky, my winning bid was only the 2nd one it had, I couldn't understand it

It must be top money for one Dan ,other potential bidders must  hope for less . They have gone up about a third at that price  :)

Far better than a Reflex  :crazy2:  for the same money   8)

These have always been a bit of an unsung hero  :-\  I like a lot of the details on them  :)

even the back end  ( although LOL at Chris wish I'd kept my TA  calls em a Skyway Estate )  :D

Love the Ruff's and the two tone's ,

pity you scrapped a decent OG finish ,, but there were better two tone combo's anyway  :daumenhoch:

and that  Orange " beats" the grey/red   hands down  :smitten:

Totally agree Christian, with all you've said, I think if I do a two tone though, i'll go down the white/grey route, however, sourcing grey Tuffs may be tricky.  :-\

A bit more progress today, gave some seat guts I had a going over with some Autosol and the Dremel, added the 'Aero' decal to the repop Kashi and took the Gen II EZ's off my Haro, and cleaned them up, I thought they may need to be sent to Dan but they're fine.

Hmmmmm that's coming along extremely nicely Dan  :smitten:

Top nut arrived this Morning Rob and is fitted, looks sweet Bro, thanks again very much for stepping in and helping out.  :4_17_5:

So today I sent a nice polished stem off to Dan for some white powder, I know you purists will hark on about how it should be a Skyway stem, but there aint too many about just now and I wanna ride this Mother. :P

I got a hollow stem bolt off Kappy but the hole on an SR is too small so one of the guys in the enginner shop at work, reamed it for me last night so it can go to Dan's today.  :daumenhoch:

I may switch to a Skyway stem in the future, but as a lot of you know, my builds are budget builds and imo an SR is a nice stem to work with, plus I bought this off Wini last year so it was there for the taking. ;)

i've still got some white MKII bars if anyone wants em  ::)  >:(

no probs on the nut Dan, i tested it out on mine before i sent it  :daumenhoch:  i'm only a set of MKI bars and chainring away from sending all my bits off to Dan for some painting  :coolsmiley:   did some work on my old orange tuffs but they're going to need a bit of dye and a new front axle i think.

Then it's just......

Crank + BB + pedals
Levers + cables
Seat post

But i'm in no rush  :daumenhoch:

Slowed down a bit on this now but for all good reasons, my stam is with Dan as I write this, my Tange BB went to Chromefix in the post today, I decided to do this as they did such a nice job of the crank that I thought that it wouldn't be right not to give the BB the same treatment. :coolsmiley:

Still waiting for my mate to bring his grinder down to cut my axles. :tickedoff:

But did fit the spankin' top nut to the headset that Rob kindly donated, Cheers Rob  :daumenhoch: ...

...so my mate Dave eventually came around with his grinder to cut down the monsterous axles, so I then got the Dremel (sorry Ed) out to add the flat spots to them so that the forks could take the front wheel...

..also, The Postie arrived with a little parcel from Dave (brummie) with the gratis Skyway decal he donated - cheers Dave  :-*
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/rr359/Retrodan72/Picture223-1.jpg)
