Title: S&M Dirt Bike - gear ratio ?
Post by: scott250 on January 30, 2012, 12:00 AM
Got a mate who has a 95ish dirtbike, but he want to do it up with newschool bits - I told him he may have problems with say a 25 9t ratio, but looking at some dirtbikes I think he might get away with it. Anyone done this?  ahh and the brake may be in the way too.  Anyways, what the lowest gearing you could get away with?
cheers

id say 39 x14 really you may squeeze 36 x13 but it will rub o brake more than likely

You won't be able to run 25/9 with the lugs, i'd use a pitbull on the top mount and grind the lugs off....  :10_2_12:

This is 43/16 to give you some idea of clearance... or lack of it...

39/14 will work with no trouble. 36/13 will need a very low profile brake, like a fly or similar and may still rub the chain depending on wheelbase. Good luck and don't forget to post a guide if 36/13 works!

Cheers all.  I've ask him if he can take a pic of it as is, for posting up here for you all - its been in a garage since around 97, untouched.  OG stickers in chrome, slams and redneck shafted stem.  Personaly I'd keep it as is, but he wants to turn it black and put as new school stuff as possible onto it to ride it this summer.

He might be better selling and getting a used new school bike, if it's in good nick it should fetch few quid...  :daumenhoch:

If it's tatty go with my earlier suggestion and chop the lugs off...  ;D

Its OK condition, be a shame to grind the lugs off - just chrome is flakey near the welds etc.
I dont think he'd sell, I offered to buy it a while back  :P

I've a 20.5" LTF frame doing nothing if he fancies a swap deal on it....  ;)

And i'll promise not to chop the lugs off...  :-X

whoah neddy, this dirtbike needs rescuing, its a nice idea but butchering a classic frame is wrong. Do the swap or figure out a way to run a compatible gear or your heading for regretsville.
