Is it possible to have these done but with fresh lettering on the ends without using decals...?
-
Some have attempted very fine brush/paint application ;)

I really dont fancy attempting that! It would end up looking like some school project!

Done it a few times , if the stamping is still quite deep/well defined it ain't hard and looks a lot better than the decals ;)
but like Matt says it does involve a paintbrush and inlaying with paint :D

Luckily after a good rub up these were good enough to be re annodised and as you say Joff the letterng was engraved in deeply enough.
I used a white touch up brush from halfords and when the paint was still tacky went round the lettering with white spirit on a cotton bud.
and here is a great thread on the museum.

you dont actually need that much of a steady hand mate
the paint fills the stamping and then as glynny says let the paint go tacky get a cotton bud with a little odourless white spirit on
give it a quick light wipe across and hopefully you will be left with paint in the stamping ( it can take a while but the results can be great ) dont worry about fooking it up as it will always white spirit off if you aint happy with it ( before its fully dry of course )
