Title: Torker MX Project
Post by: Kaner on February 20, 2012, 07:46 PM
I managed to bag this frame and fork from Andy Heaths big Clear Out sale.

It was delivered straight to SuperBikeDan (cheers Andy) and SBD has done a lovely job on finishing it and powder coating it in white.  It was originally chrome but I fancied a white one!

I also got the 6 bolt stem from Andy and it needs the finish polishing smooth and re-anodising gold.

The colour scheme is planned to be White Gold and Black using some repro parts as funds are a little tight for this one at the moment. So far the parts run down includes:

April 1981 Torker MX with drilled forks
Chrome backed decals
Torket 6 Bolt Stem
Gold Epoch Mori headset
Gt Pro Bars in Chrome
Oakley F1 Black and Yellow
Repro MX1000 and tech 3 levers from Alan's- not bought these yet
Black ACS Z-Pads or Vans brake pads
Yellow cables
ACS gold seat clamp
Sugino 180mm 400s
Izumi Gold chain
Skyway Graphites - modern seale bearings with Kool Kaps
Elina Seat - just like a lightening bolt
Reynolds 531 lay back seat post in chrome
I have some MX Pedals which I'm thinking of having re-finished and re-anodised gold, or I might hunt down some Gold cage pedals?
Pad set from Firebird at some point.

Here it is before:

Here it is today, decals are on their way.

I'd have left it chrome, it didn't look in bad shape at all...  :-\

But then again i've just sold a chrome frame and replaced it with a painted one...  ;D

Ben ,you killed the chrome!  Not enough survivors left.   :-[

The brakes you are on about buying from Alan's, I fitted some to a mates bike, look ok-ish in pictures but in the flesh they look and feel shite. Like one of the lower end copies in the 80's. What about DC 890's?

That's gonna look proper nice Ben, I prefer painted frames so I would have done the same I think.
Nice purchase.

I do love a Torker  :smitten: shame the chrome couldn't be saved  :(

Surely the chrome is still there, just under the powder ????

I've had a few chrome bikes powdered and none had the chrome removed so all is not lost.

Ben looks nice mate.  :4_17_5: :4_17_5: Personally i'd hold out for some different brakes. I know Sawzall has some NOS gold Weinmans that would be cheaper than re-pops and then they'd be era correct then.  :daumenhoch:

Looks nice, Chrome didn't look bad. I did ask Andy about that but you already had it. I keep looking for a round holed gusset Torker. I had a Torker Magnum 200 BITD.
Long shot I know but was there a IG11 post code stamped in the BB?

the chrome was ok but only in terms of no pitting or peeling but there was no chance of polishing it back to

look good all round and now there's no chance as when i work over chrome it's sanded with 80 grit and with

a sanding machine :daumenhoch:

Yeah I know I'm a chrome killer, it even goes against the grain with my own principles, but I just love them white!

I will take a look into some DC890s or other brakes, just don't se a great deal of them around and I'm not so keen on Weinmanns, I will see what turns up.

Afraid not bud, they were earlier frames when stamped on the BB, this one is JT3253 stamped on the inside rear drop out.

I have a NOS DC 1080 and double bend lever in gold, dated 1980 Ben - with yellow cable. Was gonna go on my motomag, but fitted a coaster instead. Would look sweet on this  :daumenhoch:

I just think chrome bikes can look a bit boring and there are loads of chrome Torkers on Rads Museum pages and on the actual BMXMuseum, but it's all solved now and looking sweet and clean and white!

Decals have arrived, going to pop them on tonight!

Ta for now Kaner the Chrome Killer!

just to reiterate to those screaming about the chrome,

it was NOT saveable although it looks good in the first pic (taken by me) it had flaked in places and the forks were down to the nickle, the only option was a rechrome or powder

Your bike you do as you wish , i think it'll look mint in white , at the end of the day if you want a change you can always get it rechromed when funds allow  :daumenhoch:
