How critical is the width between 990 mounts on front forks? Am i right in thinking if they were 8/9 mm wider than usual it would just reduce the cable distance between the calipers and thus slightly less travel (but they would stil work)? (http://www.pistonheads.com/inc/images/scratchchin.gif)

I've got some forks with 990 mounts on i can take measurements/pics of whatever you need to know about em?

I've got some 990 mount forks, just wondering if i removed the mounts and spaced them further apart ( about 5mm further away from the rim, so 10 mm in total) would the brakes still work well enough to use :daumenhoch:

Why would you want to move the brake mounts?

i don't see a problem moving them, they should work just as well. are you having trouble with the tyre hitting them? i had an animal glh tyre on mine that hit the brakes, had to put a differnt tyre on to solve the problem. both tyres were 2.25" wide so i measured the diameter of the animal glh and found it was 20.5". just enough to hit the brake.

The only problem you might have is the caliper arms hitting each other before the brake is pulled on fully :-\
Adjustment of the brake block spacers would put that right
The lugs on my forks are about 88mm apart

Just got in from work and mine measure 85mm so i guess its not too critical but yes, the arms hitting each other before the brakes kicked in was my main worry.
Sounds daft i know but im looking to mount two of these:

On my WTP brakeless forks and bore & tap out one of the holes to accept cut down, bolt on, 990 mounts.
I dont really want to replace the forks or drill them for a caliper brake and want the stopping power of 990 brakes.
The Oddy clamps will result in the mounts being central on the width of the fork tubes, hence my original question.
May even incorporate some small fold up standers on the seat clamp bolt if i can arsed ;)

Don't worry about it, crack on and do your mod. You can alter the effective angles and widths of the arms by messing with the block spacers and different brands of block. One way or another it's likely to work.
Look closely at your blocks, you'll notice that there are fatty and thinny spacers as standard, you can swap these around and/or add another or a couple of M6 washers or summat.
Look at other brands of block, some are significantly thicker/thinner than others, which will alter the position of the arms obviously.
It's also not uncommon for people to take a grinder to the arms to clear a particular tyre. Again, if it's done sensibly there's no problemo :)
