Title: what you look at when buying stuff
Post by: motomagII on March 31, 2012, 11:27 AM
who on here checks weight and reviews bike parts before they buy em or do you just look for shiny and buy
ps:i ask as i built my mid?new school neal wood up and basically bought what i liked the look of and went for deals/sale stuff  in the right colours .never thought of make or weight too much except the rear wheel profile hub (as i know they are good)
when it was finished it rides mint but is probably couple pounds heavier than anticipated it being .do people think about weight etc when building a bike from bits or just hit parts they like know are good
ps heres what i got#
neal wood frame
s&M race xlt forks
exposure i know'stem
we the people od bars
kona lcok on grips
profile 3 piece cranks and standard profile bb set
dmr v8 magnesiun pedals
standard 36t sprocket (dont know make)
lifer bmx (cheers steve )sealed from wheel
profile hub alienation 440 rim double butted spokes rear wheel
unknown seat clamp and post
eclat seat
weight is 26 lbs as near as on my scales
rides mint as said but was hoping for round 24 when building it

Drill some holes in it!!!!!

When i first started building I went for shiny and colour coordinated, but now I'm obsessed with weight, more so the ratio of weight:££££'s I try to get the lightest parts for the least £££'s Hence why my S&M is a bit of a clour hotchpotch now, the little brown saddle i have not to everyones taste weighs in at less than most pivitol combos. I cut the seatposts right down now to save a couple more gramms. god its a sad life

im exactly the same as glen :daumenhoch:

rather have strong and heavy than light and breakable

light stuff is ok if your a 9-11st kid but not if your a 14st adult

also im not the smoothest of riders :2funny: :2funny:

Greg you've become a right weight weeny!

Ti axle in the profile cranks will lighten it up a bit

Lightweight wheels/tyres will make the biggest difference to how any bike rides regardless of overall weight

How much does a Neal Wood frame weigh?

It's unfair comparing it to the alloy/carbon fork bikes you've owned

I usually go for quality parts, most of my stuff is second hand, but in very good nick :daumenhoch:

I check out review/views,then see what i can find :)

My 38 Special weighs in at 21.5lb,should be 21lb when i fit the ti crank axle, all the parts are good quality, and strong :),think 90% of the parts are second hand.

I tend not to break stuff as i weigh 10.5 stone, weight is a big factor when it comes to breaking bike parts, i know plenty 16 stone riders, they go though bits like a dose of salts :D

It's s&m or standard frames
Profile cranks,chain rings,hubs and stems
Alienation rims
Primo ss spokes
S&m bars

All my bikes have the same, I trust each component for its weight and strength against cost.

My 38 special has profile mini hubs, but fr my neal wood I run profile ss 10mm axle, in my laf I use ss 14mm, that's about the only thing tht really separates them from each other regarding weight to strength.

Even my spares are profile and s&m just in case....."

Don't do carbon, steel is real.
