I've got some 14mm axle wheels, and some 10mm forks I want to try out. The wheels are ok, hardly used, and it'd cost about £50 to get a similar quality wheel, I just wanna try the forks out cheap as poss to start with.
Is it possible to get a 14mm axle spindle with pre-shaved ends?
I can't get the existing ones filed as they're hollow.
Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks.

What's the hub?
-
FreeAgent branded "14mm hollow cartridge bearings"
-
I reckon then (although others may know more) that your best bet would be to remove the axle from the hub (you'll have to knock out one bearing to do this), measure the distance between the collars for the bearings on the axle and go to your LBS and find a 10mm collared axle with the same collar distance. You'll also need new bearings the same outer/width dimension as the ones already in there, but with a 10mm inner ring.
Or buy a new 10mm hub and lace to wheel.

Cheers for this.

or grind the axles down yourself :)
I've done 2 sets with an angle grinder and if you go steady its fine :daumenhoch:

Nice pics.
I don't have a grinder, I'll try some local body shops and see what they say.
-
That is a point - if the axle wall thickness is 3mm you could get away with it - that'd leave 1mm thickness after shaving.

Thats a bit risky tho ??? you can't be that precise with the ol'grinder - as you pointed out Dan I'd only ever do it on solid axles to be honest.

why not take the forks out to 14mm if there is enough meat on the dropouts?
-
There's not. The drop outs are pretty slim.
I'll see if the bike shop can sort out an axle & bearings, if not, just wait for the right cheapish wheel to come along.

I'd be taking the grinder to the forks. It's only 2mm either side.
Stick a photo of the forks up, let's have a look.
