Title: S&M Bennett build ** Finally Finished **
Post by: midschooljon on May 06, 2012, 07:20 PM
Between 95 and 99 the only bikes I rode were S&M's. I absolutely loved them and still do to this day. In that time I rode a 1" Holmes, a 1" Challenger, and finally a Bennett. Im now on a mission to buy back all 3 of those models and the first one that popped was a Bennett (anyone got a 1" Holmes or Challenger they want to sell me?  ;)). As far a bikes go the Bennett was never my favourite bike, but I have loads of good memories from the time I rode it so am really keen to get this built up to the same spec as mine back in 99.

Despite the frames rather tatty appearance it is in really good shape. Normally bikes of this era have dropouts and chainstays that are pretty smashed up. Luckily this one looks like harly any grinding was done on it so it should clean up nicely.

The frame has now been sent off the the imfamous SBD to get a fresh coat of red paint put on it so Im looking forward to seeing how that turns out.

After buying the frame I started hunting for the bits I needed to build it up to the same spec mine originally was. After looking around for the various individual parts I stumbled across this little gem on ebay that had half the bits on it I was looking for. I saved it in my watch list and ended up winning it for an absolute steal!  :4_17_5:

This little dirtbike will now be sacrificed to the Bennett build with a fair chunk of its parts getting tidied up and going onto the Bennett. The DB is actually in pretty bad shape so dont feel too bad for it  :LolLolLolLol:. It needs some repars as it has had the dropouts butcherd to accept 14mm axles   and there are also a few dents in the seat stays. I will still keep it though, and when I get some time will restore it as well.

Thats it for now. More updates shortly...

nice i remember that db on ebay

also wasnt that bennett frame on ebay for £25 bin?

what 1in holmes are u after, mk1, mk2 or mk3

mk3 is the most common and cheapest of the 3 normally can be picked up for around £100 depending on condition

just noticed that redneck on the db is a early squared edged gyro unfriendly one :daumenhoch:

Yea I got lucky with both the frame and the DB purchase. I kind of needed a break though as my PFT and Sport builds are definitely not looking cheap right now  :LolLolLolLol:

As far as the Holmes goes Id prefer a MK2 or MK3 simply because I rode those models. I wouldnt say no to a MK1 by any means but would be happy with a MK2/3 if thats what came up.

Yea early S&M stuff is pricy for sure.

Nice! Lucky you on finding a bike that has most of the same parts as yours from bitd :daumenhoch:

Yes that was a real stroke of luck. It changed the whole build from something that could have cost a fair bit to something that will hopefully end up quite affordable.

Well in that case they going to look identical  :LolLolLolLol:

Going on mine is a silver redneck, chrome slams, Primo V monster tyres, and a Primo Hemorrhoid seat. Pretty much standard kit for bikes of that era.

Finally back on the Bennett build and making a little progress...

Textured Primo Hemroid seat, Primo Rod post, and Primo Viking clamp.

Got the down tube decal on the frame but still need to draw up the missing ones.

Headset, stem, and fork are all installed but the compression bolt and washer are pretty ugly. I dont suppose anyone on here has a tidier set they would like to sell?

I will try get a bit more done over the weekend as I almost have everything needed to finish this now.

Made a bit more progress on this today. The cranks are all bolted up and the brakes are installed. Im just waiting for a chain, freewheel, and cable and I should be able to finish this up.

The poor condition of the compression bolt on these forks is really bugging me now. I dont suppose anyone has a pitchfork compression bolt like the one in this picture knocking about? Id love to replace the rubbish one I have with one one like that. If you do and are prepared to sell it please let me know.  :daumenhoch:

That looks lovely. You dont see many in white. Raw Bennett's were always my favourite colour, but as this bike is a rebuild of my OG bike from BITD I'm sticking to red as that is what I had.

Here's a quick update on mine, I was putting it together as a mock up before tearing down and refinishing all the scratched parts etc,  and I actually liked the way it was looking. So with that said, I'm going to fit a cable and chain and keep it the way it is for now.  :)

Thanks for that. Had to get it powdered twice as the first colour wasn't quite right. Sat on the frame for a week with the first colour contemplating just building it up, but in the end decided to send it back and do it again as I would have never been happy if I hadn't. I think you are correct. There were a few frames in stock when he left for Volume. If I recall correctly they renamed them to get rid of them without using his name but didn't continue to make the bike once they were sold out. So it wasn't a new run of frames just a blow out of old stock.  :daumenhoch:

Like when they changed the name of Castillo bars to the AD bar (although they did keep making them for a while after he left)

And then when Mike bought out a silmilar bar made by Volume, he called it the Mad Dog bar  ;D
