i am spraying not powder coating a cheap frame with cans .thing is i dont usually go down this route so
not sure about getting the hardest finish laquer wise.i no it will scratch of easy but its only a cheap ride
how many coats of laquer do i need and do i do them tacky over each coat then long warm dry.dan

i used to paint cars for a living, you only need one good coat of laquer, some paints dont need laquer & some do. powdering a frame is cheaper than doing a good paint job anyway. how to get a decent finish..primer..sand down..primer..sand until you have a smooth finish, now paint..sand with wet & dry..same again..now depending on what pain you have used sand to a nice haze & then laquer. if its a paint thats not supposed to have laquer dont sand to a haze. just laquer.
i'll post you a help link in a min... oh i forgot, if its cold & you laquer you will end up with milky kind of marks under the laquer

I'm about to strip and spray a frame of mine in the not to distant future. I figured I'd give it a go with a spray can from Halfords first as it would be cheap and I'd like to have a go at doing it myself. I thought I'd nitromors the frame. Strip it and clean it fully. Then apply the primer, then the top coat. It goes without mentioning that I have no experience at doing this at all.
If I balls it up I can then get it powedered the colour I want and I haven't wasted a lot of money. ;D ;D ;D

paintings better but takes longer if you want a good finish but powder is cheaper

You wont get a good finish with cans, powdercoating will give a better finish. The best finish will be 2 pack paints as used by bodyshops. If you ever want to paint one yourself with car paints, strip the parts to bare metal. If the frame is in good order use a scotch pad to roughen the surface.Then there is no need to put on a 2 pack primer a thin coat of etch primer will do then add your colour. One good thing is if you have any dents fill them and 2 pack prime over the filler, rub this down with 500 grit if your painting a solid colour, or 800 if your using a base coat colour.
Solid colour is paint only, you apply the paint, 3 coats and thats it your parts are done and are shiney !!!!!!
Base coat was mainly used for mettalics, where you applied the colour which had the mettalic in aswell, and then you applied a laquer to give you the hard shiney finish, base coat is used on all cars now i think as its now water based and not solvent.

So to round it off
you wont get a good shine off cans, polish and solvents will eat into it and can take the paint off over time.
powder coating is tough, although a bit thick and doesnt shine that well
2pack paints used on cars not as tough as powder, can be polished and shines well, also once fully hardened polishes great
base coat paint, for your mettalics, pearls, and candy colours gets covered with a 2pck laquer.
if you have the tools to use car paint, it works out cheaper than cans !!!!! If you want the bike to look well, but you dont have the tools, find a car painter who would do it on the cheap(guvvie job)

only prob with powder it looks good but if you chip it thats it, at least with paint you can respray parts & touch up

if its a rider, and a non metallic colour, use spray hammerite.
it will stay on for longest and looks good.
powder coating for me in a non met colour is 25 quid plus vat.
not much more than enough rattle cans to do the job!
