Built up some Mike Buff Zeds using 194mm spokes, they were way too long even when i laced them 4x.
Some of the spokes now stick out above the nipple by about 3-4mm.
What do i do as i cant be arsed to un lace them and use shorter spokes.
Dremel off the excess?

Obviously you are not usin a low flange Suzue hub. I would redo them with the right spoke :daumenhoch:
-
They are low flange ACS hubs....
-
The problem you get with lacing spokes with generic sizes suggested by others is that this often happens.
Z-rims have a raised central area which call for slightly shorter spokes and also one low flange hub can (and usually is) be a completely different size than another.
I wrote the 'how to' for calculating spoke size exactly for this reason, it would be a for members to work out how to calculate spoke sizes and get it right 1st time.
-
i'm sure i worked this out on mine with LF hubs and got 191mm for a 4x using a spoke calc
-
i laced z's with low flange acs z hubs with 194's and they were fine ???
-
Well they are getting the dremel treatment anyway :4_17_5:
-
If its only every 2nd spoke sticking out it means you need to rotate the spokes one hole back to even them out. Sometimes its one required on one side, but can happen on both. Pretty quick to do as you dont need to relace the wheel entirely.
-
I think its about every 4th spoke,i don't think i have done anything wrong as they look ok and the spin ok and arent buckled :daumenhoch:

If its every 4th spoke sticking out the top it just means one side needs to be rotated back one hole. Follow the sticking out spoke down to the flange to see which side it is. Then just undo the spokes 2 at a time (2 that cross each other) and move them back one hole working your way around the wheel. Once you undo the 2 spokes and slide them over you will see how they level out right away. :daumenhoch:

I really am Rich, it seems amazing to me that someone takes the time to put together a how to and still people cannot be assed to read it and then get the bloody spokes wrong.
Are we really just sat here talking to the fooking wall?
-
I did lace these a while back and to be fair,i don't think the spoke calculator was on here then,if it was i apologise.
I actually posted a thread a year or so ago asking the length of spokes needed and took the advice from it.
My bad >:(

I've always used 189mm for LF hubs using a 3x pattern :daumenhoch:
and 184mm for HF :daumenhoch:
-
I always measure my hubs, but have found 188mm pretty much cover most LF hubs for a 3x pattern. Never laced a 4x. :)

I was sold the wrong spokes when lacing low flange suzue hubs to araya 7X's. I got a sturdy file & files the excess off. Took about 15 mins per wheel. Had to be careful not to file the alloy araya's though. The file on alloy would be like a hot knife through butter!

I may be grumpy Dave, but fook me how many times are we going to have threads asking for spoke lengths or that spokes are too long etc when the tools are on this site to ensure it doesn't happen?
Is lazyness/stupidity really an excuse ;) :P

i wouldn't know sean seeing as "I" never have to ask such questions do i :LolLolLolLol:
