I dont understand the fascination with Hutch. They were never on my radar in the 80's, arnt they just badly made overly expensive BMX's? Am i wrong? were they a late 80's thing?
Explain yourselves Hutch lovers!
-
I always prefered Starsky...
Come on, someone had to do it. :-X
-
Don't give up on us baby...

Dont make the wrong seem right :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Huggy Bear was pretty cool.
-
Had a Pro Racer BITD. Was a great bike to race. Suited me perfectly.
Hutch always looked so ‘factory’. They had some great riders like Tim Judge, Toby Henderson, Charles Townsend and Mike Miranda (Better brand ambassador than rider IMO, but still managed to look good with all the pink shit going on)
They made some top quality stuff. I know there were a few problems with some bits, but that happens to the best of them.
I’m not a Hutch lover, but what’s not to like?
-
The Trickstar is a lovely looking frame and forks and looks an awesome bike when built up, but other than that i don't get it either.
Although saying that, i love beats but then others can't stand them.
-
Rolex of the bmx world. Massively expensive to own and maintain properley but dont loose money and inconsistently unreliable
-
why are diesel jeans better than wrangler?'theyre not but just THE NAME to have, hutch was the fashionable name, the rich mans bike, nothing more or less.i loves em :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
-
I know we all have them but TA for me all the way!
Ooooh i love my TA so much it must be illegle :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
-
Nope, never got it either. The money they fetch I can't understand.......

x 2, had a pro racer and it was nice but not worth the price they demand. 1.5k for the cranks and they're not really that rare :-\ . still it's worth it to those who buy them :daumenhoch:

Love twin top tube designs too, Haro and Torker float my boat!
-
i likes em :)
silly money mind you
-
Nice riding bikes, but cant see the attraction for the high prices. Not that popular BITD in my circles. But my girlfriend of the time had a Pro Raider that she used to race.
-
:crazy2:
-
NOT just a name, very good bikes to race and ride generally. The Hutch stem made it possible for 6 footers to still race 20" as there was NOTHING else readily available at the time.
-
Don't really care for em
Iconic brand though, remember them well bitd
Some parts were great, long stems, bars, frames, others truly shocking, cranks, deathtrap mini f+f,trickstar 2,lo-caliber range etc
There were many other brands that made bikes and parts as good, and better, but Hutch had the riders and were marketed well, stars n stripes everywhere, made in usa everywhere, all that b$llocks.
As for popularity now, prices etc, this is due mostly to people who couldnt afford them bitd, and can afford them now,and those who want expensive o/s stuff but are too narrow minded to think of anything different.

And like 90% of hutch stuff, been rechromed ::)
offer him £40 posted :daumenhoch:

What's not to like ,as already said
All the valid reasons to like them have been listed .
SOME people have a stigma against them now JUST because the command fairly high prices , and that's it :crazy2:
and they're sheep just bleating because somebody else said it ,nobody goes on about JMC's ,, have any of you thought about trying to build a Darryl Young
,the more you get into collecting rare collectable parts ,you realise Hutch parts aren't anywhere near the proper high priced stuff
Narrow minded ,, for choosing to build a Hutch ? maybe more narrow minded for following the bleaters ::)
If anything apart from the Aerospeeds all the Hutch parts are pretty reasonable ::)
You can name loads of comparable parts that are far dearer,, but I'll give one each to start
Hutch stem,, ESP are dearer
Hutch Hubs ,,,Son lites dearer
Hutch frames ,, VDC dearer
Hutch bars ,,, DP ladder,, did I just say foooking DP bars :crazy2: yes dearer :LolLolLolLol:
Hutch seatpost,,, DX post dearer
and so on :)
I love most BMX's and I like Hutch because they are one of the best brands , and not the dearest ;)
Each to their own I say , you don't have to like them but it's the same old reason ,,price,, that's why people hate em :idiot2:
not because they're inferior :)
It's usually from people who haven't built anything different from the norm who chirp up :LolLolLolLol:
-
Call me small minded but all I need in my life is a TA, Ripper and a Torker. Unfortunately i only have the TA at the moment but i Do have 10 & 12 year old boys and a fit second wife I am willing to trade for the other two.

Well said Christian :daumenhoch:
I rode a Trick Star all through my teens hence my fixation with them now .. which over spilled into all things Hutch.
You have to admit they went all out bitd .. how many other brands of the same era made so many parts? ok, some like the aerospeeds weren't that good but most the stuff was.... until they lost their minds post 86 :crazy2:
-
Over priced tat and the Trickstar is rotten (as are all freestyle bikes ever made by every manufacturer). Excellent marketing, though.
...if any one what's to give me a Hutch Judge, in blue
-
Call me small minded but all I need in my life is a TA, Ripper and a Torker. Unfortunately i only have the TA at the moment but i Do have 10 & 12 year old boys and a fit second wife I am willing to trade for the other two.
I'm not saying you're small minded ,, I was refering to Andy Rooski's view that it's small minded to build a Hutch rather than another make :)
and I thought it seemed more small minded to hate them ,,,,,,,just based on somebody saying "ooo aren't they dear"
Everybody warms to a brand ,,, some people just like Mongooose some just like SE ,
Are they small minded ?
No :)
I have 14 different makes in my collection ,,before you say I'm small minded too :LolLolLolLol:
Yay ,,,,you got yourself the debate you wanted :4_17_5:

Gen 1 freestyler maybe otherwise I agree on freestyle bikes yuk yuk yuk!

Crap product, been and gone by 1990 when haro, mongoose, GT, redline are still going, prices got pumped up by haneys when they had shed loads of it 10 years ago, got loads of collectors to want it then just cashed in........

That should say
Hutch gone by the time Mongoose, GT Redline ,Haro were ALL bought out and lost the original owners passion :(
and turned into just generic mass produced far eastern shight :crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy2:
not very desirable innovative or cool anymore :-\
:LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:

How many times have all those manufacturers changed hands tho?
-
Hutch never had a chance to change hands, it fell apart before he could sell it on

-
Don't fluff around the subject Pete just say what you mean!
I started riding in 80 on my puch Murray and gave up in 84 coz I was sh1t! So I think I missed the freestyle bike thing. I have a puch that I bought about 8 years ago. I had forgotten what a pile of crap they were! THe only other bike I had bitd was a burner gs! We weren't very rich I am afraid. I could wheelie forever, rock walk, endo etc but quarter pipes were a bit beyond me. My 12 year old has a custom S&M BTM that's cost me about £1400 so far but he is awesome on it and unlike most parents I know how important bmx's are.
-
It's hard to keep a rabbit without one .. :D
Never really done out for me though .. Just a posh over priced BMX .... Even though I do love the pedals .. :daumenhoch:
Robinson for life .... :)
-
This is my second favourite mass debate!
-
I LOVE SOME CRUTCH :coolsmiley:
-
Re: Lets get some heated debate going - I dont like Hutch
i know what you mean i always liked starsky better but without hutch to bounce off it just wouldn't be the same program and if the torino wasn't in it as well that would have just killed it, i think its the chemistry of hutch starsky and the crappy chases in the torino crashing into cardboard boxes so i think you have to have the whole package
-
I LOVE SOME CRUTCH :coolsmiley:
That should have been the title.... 'is hutch your crotch?'. Skki3330 your a genius.
-
Good points well put Dubber :daumenhoch:
In reference to my narrow minded point, this refers to people who build a Hutch bike because they think they ARE the best, most exclusive bikes and therefore need to build one for that reason, without thinking about interesting alternatives:daumenhoch:
-
Far too common for me, Rippers and Skyways seem even more common. :buck2: I like the rare stuff you just don't see anymore, and Hutch is not that brand.
BUT..... when a Hutch is built properly, there ain't too many bikes out there that look that good.
I don't have a problem with Hutch parts though, their pedals were iconic and they still are today.
I think Christians post earlier on was bang on the money..... Top post.
-
GT are SH1T
-
For me,it's my favourite frame set that i had BITD,achieved my best results on my Pro Racer...so i guess the brand has stuck with me to this day. Never had any of the problems with the frame snapping, yes,my first deep H stem did start flaking it's chrome , yes they replaced it no quibble. Other than that no probs.Never owned a set of Aero speeds, never likely to. I guess as said before,it's just what your into, each to their own. There's brands about i'm not fond of,but the way i see it is these things are personal to every individual.

You go in Stodgy's shop all the time Pete ::)
Not in this century have they been "cool"
I don't know anyone who says they are a really cool brand :-\
You know yourself Fit S$M FBM BSD are sought after ,,,cooler :)

Pete ,,,just think of a price you're happy with then double it , times 10 ,double it and put plus postage :daumenhoch:
-

me me me .. i love Hutch that much i'll pay triple what anyone else will give you and i'll even wait till they go out of fashion for you to post it
-
it's now all over priced tat the lot of it :2funny:
-
It's expensive but not rare and most of the parts are reasonably easy to get hold of if you know the right people, compared to the lesser known but more desirable and costly 70's parts. Even if you do know the right people it takes a whole heap of work to get them to sell, not just for the money but they want to make sure the parts go to a genune collector and not ebay for profit. ;)
I do agree with what the Haney brothers have done to push the value of Hutch parts up though, but good for them for getting in their 1st I guess :daumenhoch:
-
I do agree with what the Haney brothers have done to push the value of Hutch parts up
Is that meant to be 'don't' Ash ::) ;D Hutch is far too common these days, It's like having a Burner in your house :LolLolLolLol:

Must have had something going for them if they could propel my slow ass to national finals... any idea how few 20" bikes actual fit me in the late 80s?
Here's my battered old Pro Racer F&F and deep H stem, probably about 3rd/4th hand when I got them:

i like the hutch stuff, when i was a kid i never saw a hutch though :-[ it was all gt's ,pks burners etc , i suppose its like a lot of old school bmx stuff its the kudos of having something good like vector bars ,hutch donut seat clamp, haro gen1 etc it doesn't mean its a lot better than other stuff but its just got the kudos and a lot of hutch stuff has this its sort of top of the line and as hunterdubber says it was top end stuff even back in the day (hunterdubber makes some good points in the thread by the way i knew he'd be on it as soon as i saw the thread title :daumenhoch:
-
hutch.. too much. too well known by world and dog! not particularly keen on the branding or look/design of the parts or prices! :buck2:
Pooches looked good on the london ride !

NOOO. make it stop !! :'(
-
Jon I've got to ask.......how bloody tall are you
That Pro Racer looks like a mini
-
About 6"1' I think - does look small doesn't it, tyres were 1.75 and 1.5 so makes the wheels look even smaller :)
Imagine what it'd have been like without a pro sized frame and long stem...
-
Is this time to say I have a lovely Hutch Judge for sale :)
-
why are diesel jeans better than wrangler?'theyre not but just THE NAME to have, hutch was the fashionable name, the rich mans bike, nothing more or less.i loves em :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
spot on marky ;)
-
Although Hutches leave me pretty meh! And those with chrome frame and forks with hints of chrome and chrome accents leave me cold.
I have to say that a Hutch does look nice when built correctly (i.e. NOT ALL BLOODY CHROME ;) ;D )
-

The cuts are better, the denim roll is of far higher quality and they are put together better.

Hutch..............I thought you bought one , remove the seatpost clamp , and chuck the rest
Heres a badly listed one, if anyones interested

I have a Hutch Trickstar on my must have list so i suppose i must like them :P
-
I can't really see anything offensive about them...except maybe the prices, oh and the Trickstar II :P
They're an iconic brand with an important place in the sports history but like most brands some models and parts are better than others.
The race frames held their own on the track BITD and look nice enough to my eyes plus they were innovators.
Seems like it's just today's prices, being the 'All American Brand' and having incredible marketing nous for the time that folks have the problem with ???
Get past all that and they have some very very nice products (IMO) 8) :)
-
But they did make some tosh..What was that downhill racer. Laser or something :-\
-
Have we covered Hutch then ,, :)
JMC next ?,,,,,,,,,£1200 for bars ,,,,,,c'mon :yahoo_silent:
Cook bros ? how much for a stem
Overpriced ? ,,,,,,,,,only a tad ;)
-
I was thinking maybe VDC next...........
-
Jmc and VDC are down to flannel camel and Radman, Radman brought all the jmc stuff, told you lot it was great, you lot got excited and and paid his prices, he now has 4 houses, 2 villas abroad and 20 fooking vw's. Camel brought every VDC out there and left 3 up for sale...... Anyone got the pic of his landing with em on ? Jesus there is some nasty stuff there, some had Chris king headsets in.
-
Looks like I'm on to a winner then.. Black Amex only please.. :LolLolLolLol:
Don't dislike any bike really. All silly prices IMO.. But I'm sure people see this before they start and take a dive.
Iconic brand and have a great race history and I think they ride nice.. ;) o and looks the boll@ck in candy red :)
-
Old camel's still flogging loads of gear at his usual prices. $500+ for a set of B's ???
At least with Cook Bors gear you know it's VERY well made and wont fall apart, but fook me building a complete is costly and building 2 is a nightmare ::)
-
What's not to like ,as already said
All the valid reasons to like them have been listed .
Best point on this thread, well said Christian

Hutch bars ,,,Haro sig Vectors
Hutch Hubs ,,,OG Bullseye Campagnolo Sherriff
Hutch pedals ,, Bullseye pedals Reedy pedals
Hutch western stem ,,, Brute stems
Hutch seat clamp,,, Suntour clamp from Biagio :LolLolLolLol:
or basically anything Profile is dearer ,, pedals , lockjaw stems, Champ f&f, etc :-\
I didn't start the thread and I'm just stating there's no justified reason for hating Hutch :)

Hutch seat clamp,,,PLME Top that Mr Stiltskin ;D ;D and cook bros wont top it either ::) ;D
