I have put these cranks on this Haro Backtrail, and the locating tag that goes through the chainwheel, only goes into it by about 1mm or so. The bottom bracket isn't the sealed type, and so the chainwheel is slightly further away from the cranks than it would be if it did have sealed bearings.
Is this a problem? could I be pedaling fast one day, and it slip out? and would a sealed BB sort this problem out?

I wouldn't trust that mate, no.
Treat yourself to a sealed BB, that'll fettle it and be nicer to ride too :daumenhoch:

Looks like the Tophat washer isn't right for that crank spacing, try a diffferent one perhaps.

i don't think changing the BB will make a bit of diference :-\ other than being much smoother and longer lasting.
I'm with John, the problem is the sprocket is too far away from the crank arm, either a new top hat washer, or grind that one down a little so the sprocket goes right up to the crank arm.

Im talking about replacing the bottom bracket and spindle for a sealed one, this one has no top hat washer

To be honest, I'd replace the entire crank, they are pretty rubbish cranks anyway, I have a knackered set in the shed, I use them as hammers!!
BMX city do a full job with sealed BB for £35 I think. Not the best, but good for the money and It'll have a chainring bolt fixing not a peg.
Just a thought, thats all!

Surely his problem is all down to the unsealed BB and the way it all goes together?
A sealed bb will allow him to fiddle around with tophats and sort it out?

Yeah its all down to the unsealed bb. I would like to keep the cranks as they are chrome.

£35 may be worth it if it included the bearings and spindle and all the washers. Counterfeit do it for this price.

Just take the drive side crank arm off, and turn the top-hat washer round (so the bit that sticks out on it is on the inside of the sprocket). Then it'll fit in the hole.

What's the deal with the axle at the ends, 8 spline, square, 48 spline?

8 spline, the crank arms are off a 2009 Freestyler.

Ok, Stodgy has those axles on the shelf I believe.
Cheap DiamondBack USA sealed BB from ebay for about £14 and you're in business.

Yep, looks like an unbeatable deal.
Don't even use the new arms, your existing chrome ones will go straight on.
you could then sell your old unsealed axle & BB with the new black arms and get some of your money back.

Right I'm finding this hard to believe.
1- remove crank spindle and chainring.
2- fit only the spindle and bearings into the bottom bracket.
3- fit the chainring with a tophat washer on the inside onto the spindle
4- now fit the crank arm locating the pin into the chainring.
You don't need to buy anything!!! :daumenhoch:

It's a threaded unsealed axle Stu - the tophat washer parts built in, so when you install the sprocket you've got to put it over the entire axle, then a threaded nut/bearing race holds the sprocket in position, same as a 1-piece crank. You can't just take off the drive side crank arm and change the sprocket on these fella.
