Title: stripped stem repair
Post by: Glen on June 03, 2012, 11:55 AM
I recently got an S&M race stem, after a single days use the bars slipped so while I was adjusting them I managed to strip one of the pinch bolt threads.  Is is worth trying to fix or should I just chuck it?

you could use a helicoil to repair it, pretty cheap of the bay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/25-Piece-Thread-Repair-Kit-M6-x-1-0-x-8-0mm-Helicoil-Type-/251054102307?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3a73fd9723#ht_2644wt_754 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/25-Piece-Thread-Repair-Kit-M6-x-1-0-x-8-0mm-Helicoil-Type-/251054102307?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3a73fd9723#ht_2644wt_754)

Might be worth having a word with S&M for a replacement explaining that it slipped and is also falling to bits.

For you Glen, I'd say chuck it.

Or to be more precise, sell it here to someone who can repair it and doesn't demand so much from their kit as you do.

I'd guess you could probably drill out and go a size up.

Glen, I'll have it mate actually - it can sit on my cruiser between the slams and the Pitches  :)
