Title: Trip down memory lane
Post by: markyp on July 20, 2012, 04:59 PM
i saw a similar thread over on the museum recently and it got me thinking. forget what you know now about various brands, prices, which are more collectable, how much they are worth now etc etc,put yourself back to the begining of your bmx days when you first wanted a bmx, which bmx would have put the biggest smile on your face if youd walked out of the shop with it?? my earliest memories are based around diamondback, mongoose, kuwahara and redline so im guessing quite possibly  a diamond back of some description probably a silver streak as they were all the rage then  would have made me the happiest kid in the world back in the summer of 83,what about you?? ::)

My first BMX and I still have it now. PK Ripper  :smitten: . I remember reading and hearing all about them and nagging my Dad for ages about getting one but he always said " sorry but we can't afford one". One day out the blue he said" I've seen a bike for sale, Raleigh something, let's go and take a look". Reluctant to go we head off to the lads house and in the front room was the bike.....a burnished Ripper..I nearly pissed myself with excitement  ;D

I got bought a DB senior Pro as my first proper race bike but always felt cheated as i got the cheaper option  :idiot2: I didn't realise that they were exactly  the same frames just one was smoked.

White Skyway TA.. :daumenhoch:. A guy round my way had one and It used to blow my mind everytime I saw it. I eventually got an Aero burner that I rattle canned white and put TA stickers on. That was as near as I ever got  ;D.

A bloke a few years older than me had a Chrome GT Pro and he instantly became my hero.....................until I raced at Tolworth track and saw two brothers (can't remember their names) racing Quadangles. My dream bike and one that helped me get back into this.

Massive fan of Stompin' Stu -  so obsessed about Redlines - the local bike shop had an MXIII in the window for ages. Every Saturday I went to look at it. Never could afford it and it was sold after a couple of months. Building one now though....   ;D

Raleigh Pro Burner for me   :4_17_5:  Had a Super burner to start with and stripped that gold straight off, yellow skyway on the rear, gold araya on the front, CW bars, gold suntour stem and Shimano SX levers  :smitten:  Ended up getting a Pro burner frame from the Raleigh shop in Bognor Regis. Jim, the owner said it came from the Raleigh Team, had a cracked gusset so they didn't want it anymore  :idiot2:  Their loss, my gain until my mate got his Torker  :knuppel2:  I was smitten with that and pestered the living daylights out of him for it. He caved in '83 and it was mine  ;D

Built my replica to it last year  :smitten:

I remember wanting a gusset Supergoose when we very first saw a BMX where we lived, but in the summer of '83 I saw the new Mongooses in the flesh at a big bike shop in Stourbridge, about 5 miles from where we lived. However, hanging in the window at the top of the 'Goose display was a smoked chrome ProClass which was so expensive my parents wouldn't even let me touch it.......

6 months later my parents bust a gut and sold their souls to buy me a Mongoose Cali and I loved every second I spent on that bike for years..... but I never, ever forgot that day I saw my first and only ProClass :smitten: :smitten:
