Title: The great budget build off thread ***Deadline extended to 23rd Dec***
Post by: oldschoolace on August 04, 2012, 06:35 PM
Ok guys, assuming this is ok with the mods, let the fun begin  ;D

Rules:

1 All builds must date before end 1995
2 Anything can be entered, freestyle, race, cruiser, etc
3 The budget is £175 all in. This must include the current average market value of any of the parts you already own but postage and free parts are exempt
4 Judging will be by a voting system similar to the usual BOTM threads.
5 Entries must be in by 8pm sunday 23rd Dec and voting will conclude at 8pm on sunday 30th Dec

This glorious trophy will be awarded to the lucky winner

And a second prize trophy (the top third of the main trophy) will go to er... the second place entry  ;D

Please dont cheat with the budget, this isnt about draping expensive bits on an expensive F/F its about your creativety, inginuity and passion for bmx   :4_17_5:

Feel free to use this thread for build updates, score announcements, taunts, whatever seems fun and interesting.
Get your names down and i will add them to a list in this post

Just been looking at your build, nice job  :daumenhoch:
The reason i set the date at 95 is that bikes and parts beyond that are really cheap and easily found.
Would love to include your build but there needs to be a bit of a challenge  :daumenhoch:

Good excuse to start another budget build though  ;)  :daumenhoch:

I reckon the best overall rule, is that you can't own any of the parts at the start.  Set a start time and you must buy, beg or steal from that moment on?

Count me in too. It'll be a double challenge for me. I can't stick to a budget for 5hit. My current "it'll only cost a few bob" build has gone daft! and I've only got an adjustable spanner and some rusty pliers.

Are there any rules about what it must have on it like brakes and a seat. That would save a few bob if not  ;)

I would like to enter as well guys if that's ok?

Might pull my Marlboro off eBay and use that as it only cost me £40 and it's a 1981 bike

How about the winner gets to choose to swap their bike with any of the entry bikes? Will stop people using high end parts for fear of loosing them lol

Inspired by a jubilant and busy sounding Kappy on the phone this morning i decided i needed some fun too. Out the door went the planned days work and instead i set about designing the build off trophy.

Kappy is always saying i'm special (i can lick my own elbow  :crazy2: ) and i think the trophy will be just as special.

Will get a pick up in a few days when its done  :4_17_5:

You can use any parts you wish from whenever you got them the only rule is that you have to price parts you already have at current average market value.... unless you got them for free like your F/F.

Should be more than doable for 175 notes as you already have the frame, forks, bars, stem, seatpost and rotor... and all gratis  :4_17_5:

Lucky bugger  ;D

Seriously, if you ever do want to sell it please let me know, sounds daft i know but this model is my grail in the blue and yellow  :-[

My wheels turned up today  :)
I've done a spreadsheet of what everything is costing me and I've only got 35 quid to spend on:
Pedals,
Front brake,
Front brake lever,
Brake cable,
Chain,
And inner tubes  :'(
It looks like I'll be having to exchange sexual favours for parts  >:D

Easily done on 35 notes  ;)

Well here she is as promised, the budget build off, budget trophy  :D

I have tried to build it in the spirit of the competition so the parts are low end and it only cost me a pound for the gold spray (which will probably peel off before christmas  ;D )

Good luck guys  :4_17_5:

Loving that trophy!  :daumenhoch:

Question for you, could we have a pound swap post in the market place (for sites supporters!) where parts can be exchanged for a quid plus postage for the build off.
Or is that being naughty and cooking the books?  ???

Sounds fine to me but the mods may think it a bit unnecessary. I guess a free wanted ad in the wanted section woud be just as successful  :-\

Here are a few parts for swaps:
Cstar N900A rear brake. I think this came off a Haro Zippo. I got a set free with my Zippo frame & forks. I'm using the front for my build off bike.
Rear view if you need it?
Genuine Haro bars. Again I got them free with my Zippo Frame & Forks. They have been chopped down
(http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/q521/paulbriers/B062D327-3B66-4AB8-9C68-C4E4A11F19F9-416-000000BC863FD89C.jpg)

This is what I need for my build:
White Brake cable. A rear one for a pots mod front brake,
White or pink Brake blocks. I would prefer Koolstop vans but any Skyway / Z-rim type will do. It's to top Acorn Mags,
Pedals, Ideally Odyssey shark bites as I've bought replacement cages but I missed out on the pedals on ebay  :(

What have you got for swaps??
You pay for the post for mine & I'll pay the post for yours  :daumenhoch:

Totally agree, the whole point of this build off is to have a bit of fun, maybe try a few ideas you wouldn't try on an expensive build and generally indulge our hobby. Lets face it, most of us started out with cheapo rides  :daumenhoch:

The only reason i set the date at 95 is because bikes later than that can be picked up pretty cheap and dont really represent a challenge. If anyone has an issue with Jaymz entering then chime in or pm me, otherwise we will assume the serial number on Jaymz ride is inconclusive and could be a late 95  :daumenhoch:

My pedals arrived today for my build. They look a bit small  :-\ What do you think...
Do these look like they are too small? They were only 9 quid to keep me in budget.
All I need to do now is dye my Acorn wheels (I'm not looking forward to ballsing that up!), rattlecan my front brake white then put it all together.
Total spent so far £171.10

Just measures a Shimano SX pedal that was sat on my desk. Across the plane you are measuring there it was 10cm. Hope that helps, but ultimately if it looks and feels too small, then it may well be.

also got a white dominator seat /front and rear brake calipers/ tech 6 brake levers/ ACS rotor/ also have a sun tour copy seat clamp and pink dia comp brake cables on there way so far i have spent about £80 so got a little bit left  ;D

blasted and primerd frame/ forks/post and bars.

just got to sort out the crank /headset /wheels/ tyres/ chain/ but getting there hope to get the frame painted in the next day of two.
still not sure what wheels or tyres to get/use . anyone know what spoked wheels would have been standard on one of these. and what tyres would suit
i do have a pair of white 6 spoke raliegh mags but not sure about them .
