Title: New School Rims...Old school HUBS
Post by: Woodsman on August 09, 2012, 12:06 PM
Hi Guys, i'm having a right old quandary, I can’t make my mind up on how I should go with my wheel build. Bullseye hubs are in hand. But I can’t make my mind up on rims...
Should I go 24" Hazard lites or similar or do I try and lay my hands on some NOS ukais or araya cruiser rims and go proper retro. The wheels will be going on a 2011 24 quad, built up using mostly modern version of old school classics, flight cranks, hutch bear traps, might even go for some VDC monkey bars if I can get hold of em. Bike will be used but only for cruising.
Your thoughts appreciated. Oh and any idea on spoke length if I go hazard lites and bullseye. Cheers

If you want modern parts with old school cred Id lace them up to some sun rims or something similar. Hazards are far too new school for the rest of the build in my opinion.

Rim quality has improved dramatically in recent years. Definitely get the newest ones you will be happy with the look of. 80's rims are seriously weak.  Treat your hubs to the quality rims and spokes they deserve. The spoke calculator on the DT swiss website always works for me, just remember to round down to the millimetre  or go one mil shorter rather than longer if you can't get hold of the exact size. J e james in chesterfield is great for getting spokes in odd sizes and quantities. Let us see your results... :)
