Loads of good bikes but for me the 3 I would most like to have taken home with me are:

1) The Zeronine Pro XL (The best bike there by a country mile).
2) Alex's S&M Challenger
3) Gish's S&M Holme's

For me,

1st - Nick Swannicks pink orange red Knight Performer
2nd - Manis Fox 4 Styler - again,  just love it
3rd - That two tone striped Kuwahara, I'm sorry I don't know who the owner is.

I'm with Pete, there were too many gorgeous bikes to choose only 3.

2: Animals  badlander with the stem I engraved . :daumenhoch:
3: An ET kuwi I saw ... Always wanted one .

I'd have to go for......and for 3 totally different reasons.

Snav's motorbike BMX, what an ace bit of kit and totally untouched. A friend of mine had one almost exactly the same.

R n R Centurion which was being thrashed round the track, super rare bit of kit doing what it was made to do
(http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb413/kungfunky/mk12/160.jpg)

And Phill's Black and chrome Whitehawk Racing, A friend of mine has one of these and until recently I didn't really know much about them but the more I learn the more I like them and this is one of the best.

Some fantastic bikes and great to see them in the flesh rather than just in photos.

For me:

1.) Sams Zebra ET
2.) Baby Blue Firebird Freestyler (sorry dont know who's this was)
3.) The Green NOS GT World Tour (again dont know who's this was)

As everyone else has said, 3 just ain't enough.

Great weekend.

I'll try and answer this one if anyone thinks that somethings amiss here?

And only using Darren's GJS as the example but not isolating it:

This truly did stand out from the crowd.....  :daumenhoch: However it wasn't original - the stem, pedals, hubs and seat clamp were all sprayed up with the same orange paint (colour coded for effect). The effect was that it looked great.

Unfortunately that does not count as original finish, Its difficult to judge when the bike looked so good, but you must surely all agree that this is about old school bmx and not a custom bike show. Custom Bikes at present fall into the retro new school, where you can do anything you like, only your imagination is the limit.

The bikes that were medaled or got trophies in our opinion's encapsulated Old School BMX in its truest sense - both nostalgic and original. (original finishes where applicable, original parts - No repro parts got through to our knowledge as that's too easy). etc. etc.

Its been said before, but I will say it again here, it was very difficult to judge with so many great bikes this year.

Please don't take this the wrong way, as it is a brilliant piece of engineering, and I have nothing but respect for Steve (Animal) and what he does, but is his stem on the MRD not a replica?

To be fair I think there is a pretty big difference between someone custom making a piece that is literally rocking horse poo, and going to porkchop and buying a reprop item for example. That stem was a work of art and far from a knock off item someone can buy off the shelf. Thats the way I see it anyway, but I hear your point.

EDIT TO ADD: Just to clarify I was not a judge at MK, Im just offering my 2p.  :daumenhoch:

There are no rules about show n shine, other than year and category.

Those were the judges criteria that's all.  It's a tough job which I would not want to do! You will never please everyone

How about a Concours class for those who are lucky enough to have those NOS era correct parts. Then some leeway can be given to the other categories to allow those on a modest budget have a chance of recognition.

Just a thought!
Title: Re: Ur top 3 bikes from MK12
Post by: pickle on August 23, 2012, 08:31 PM
That's what the medals were for.  It's never going to please everyone.

We did a survivor class a few years back but it was impossible to distinguish what was actually a true survivor  ???

A bike built with old parts is not a survivor in my book.........a survivor is a complete bike still as it was from BITD, warts and all just dusted down. It caused a lot of Grief so was dropped and I wouldn't think it'll be back.

Title: Re: Ur top 3 bikes from MK12
Post by: Retrodan72 on August 23, 2012, 08:37 PM
The medal system failed Rob IMO as there was a bike with a medal on that had repop grips, the seat guts were on backwards and the cables were incorrectly routed.

It's details like that judges should notice.
Title: Re: Ur top 3 bikes from MK12
Post by: That Swan Guy on August 23, 2012, 08:41 PM
Rob, I agree completely with your definition of a survivor.

Of course there wasn't, however as a judge of the S&S if I saw a bike with orignal parts and one with repop parts then it stands to reason (and common sense) that the original one would place higher.

As for the 'medal system', I personally gave medals to bikes that I really liked regardless of the parts on them (whether repops or not), in my eyes it was an acknowlegment of a really nice looking bike.

However bikes with repop, completely era incorrect, etc is never going to win the one of the top 3 trophies.

Look at it this way, if I had a classic VW beetle and took it to a VW show and entered it in their S&S do you really think it would win anything if it had modern bucket seats, modern alloys, repop wings and doors etc?  Of course it wouldn't.

Aint that the truth  :-X

I've said this before and maybe a "peoples" choice should be included into the trophies. Keep the judging as it is and give everyone else a vote using a ballot box, tally the votes up and the bike with the most wins something. That way everyone's had a say in what wins, just an idea.  :-\

Judges i dont envy you all for one minute , so many bikes at m.k. , and so many rare bikes too. but how about next year a new class.... "the bike id like to own the most ".  no "rules" what i mean is it doesnt have to be era correct , repop decals pads etc doesnt come into it, freestyle parts mixed with race parts . it just doesnt matter . its a class were you just simply like the look of the bike no matter how wrong or right it is. Because lets face it thats how most of us ran our bikes bitd  :daumenhoch: just an idea ........ BUT A GOOD ONE  :daumenhoch:

Rob, I agree completely with your definition of a survivor.

The problem is nick, how can we tell if it's just been built with old parts or not just to try and win something  ???

Ash, we tried that as well but it was open to abuse so we dropped it the next year as well  :daumenhoch:

I honestly don't see any problem with what we have now, they have been the same for 3 years now.  A bike doesn't have to be as it came from the shop, but an 80's bike with new twin pinch flights will not win.

The show and shine has always been a few well respected collectors being asked to spend hours judging the bikes based on their opinion. That way we get a ever changing viewpoint a differing style every year.
The problem will always be that everyone has differing opinions to the judges
Adopting a scoring based tick box type competition loses the passion and turns what should be abit of fun into a serious affair that is not what we should be about
I know it is difficult to build a really sweet bike and to not be recognised for what loads of people would class as trophy winner is not great and I do except that the format of judging is flawed in that it is based on the opinion of the judges better that than the alternative

But we will think on a more inclusive way of rewarding the effort that we all put in to building kids bikes

3 is too hard it really is.
I wouldn't have knocked Andy back if he had wanted me to take that zeronine home though.

I loved phils whitehawk and nick swans cw cruiser. I feel a bit off mentioning those alone because i wouldn't want to take anything away from how many i was just as blown away by.

Can't believe i forgot to look at Animals stems either, really kicking myself over that and missing so many off my want to say hello list.

I have to say too i really enjoyed walking round Carls collection, how he had them all dated in progression just give me that museum feel. It was as though i could feel the Robinson history unfolding in front of me. :coolsmiley:

My penny's worth...

Seems to me the show and shine is as difficult as ever to Judge and retain the format of which to base the points and decision on  (I would hate judging)  Ive judged many a Concourse at car shows and unless you have the absolutely 100% true basis upon which to judge , I.E Catogoraise the models/bikes and decide is originallity better than restored cars/bikes. What is thought of the use of genuine components and paint work etc there are always going to be the issue's with everyones  penny's worth over what should place and were etc..

What Evolved for us over the years was we found we were presented with a double edged sword, cars that were absolutley correct and just got better and better everytime out in the show until they were absolutley unbeatable motors, the other side of the sword was that the standards were so high we found the numbers of entrants dropped through the floor and we were judging the same cars every time out....It became a Cheque book Concourse.....for the owners who threw everything into it

One format we employed was to break the Catogories down more we fragment the classes down, yes there will be more trophies to award, yes there will be winners and losers albeit there will be more numbers with more chance of acheiving awards..

I am a novice when it comes to these bikes and I would just choose the most original bike I could find it the show and award that the winner, albeit on the other hand when you weigh up bikes that have either been sourced in the Uk, Europe or the States and the components have been NOS on a shelf somewere in the world for two or three decades thats just mind blowing those parts have been brought together for us all to enjoy.

You can always award the "Bike of the Day" for the over all winner.

Hard work Good Luck... :daumenhoch:

I imagine if you set a formula for judging then you can only end up with the same result....era correct, shiney, expensive...how much can you really improve on something that ticks all the boxes?
My brother gave some advice to a friend on selecting the best bike to buy one day...his answer, "CHOOSE THE ONE THAT GIVES YOU A BONE-ON"
Maybe that could be a new category for next time.

I can't be doing with stock builds. It's not how we had them bitd, it's not how I want one now. I make exceptions for special editions like the Harry Leary turbo which had its own parts.
