well, i thought it was only you other bastids that found bargains and cheap stuff! for your enjoyment, a 1984 RICKMAN FREESTYLER!
local junk shop buy. wanted £50, talked them down to £30 as it had no brakes and needs steering bearings :D :D :D :D :D
needs a bit of work mind, but here it is:
rickman frame (guessing it was originally white) tuffneck crank disc, sugino sprocket, shimano DX pedals, Takagi 175mm crank and sugino power stem. pooty wheels and bars but you cant have everything i suppose :D
:smitten:

Tidy find.
-
Result! :4_17_5:
-
Brilliant find!can't believe you talked them down! :daumenhoch:
-
If it was originally white then it would have a "W" code next to the serial number on the BB. eg...... 192.25.003/1W
Sadly they're not Rickman forks though. Good luck finding a set if you go down that route.
-
total barrrrgain :D

Thanks for the heads up, once I get the hundred layers of paint off il check. Already figured the forks aren't og as the welding on them is utter shit :D fingers crossed I have sourced a set of forks, just waiting to hear back on them :)
Bike is stripped to the frame now so will get some more pics up once the paint starts coming off :)
-
nice find good luck with the project :daumenhoch:
-

SBD recommended synstrip paint stripper.
bloody hell! 30 year old powder coating is tuff stuff! so much so that after 4 hours, i called it a day and will have another crack at it tomorrow.

tuff neck is in good nick under the paint :)
southern andy, do you know what the frame No.s mean? also there is no marking for a colour.... does that mean anything special?
-
Nice find :coolsmiley:
Bargain at £30 too  .... Tuf neck disc is worth close to that so you got yourself a free frame :daumenhoch:
-
Thats a champion find !! Lucky bugger
-
Great find. :daumenhoch:
Looking forward to the resto. :)
You got an idea how you want to build it?
-
£30 ?... what a result.
good work Mattt :)
-
no ideas on a build plan yet as this kinda just fell into my lap. waiting to hear back about a set of original forks which will determine how much money i DONT have left :D
also waiting till i can find out if the serial No. gives clues to age or what not.
-
Couldn't of happened to a nicer bloke :daumenhoch: I'll have that kuwi thanks ;) great find mate :daumenhoch:
-
You always say the sweetest things :-*
-
Ooh always good to see a resto thread like this. :4_17_5:
-
The serial number gives no clue as to the age but Rickman were mainly building in 1984 really so i'd say it was that.
I've PM'd you with the rest of the details.
-
Nice find, gotta love a Rickman Freestyler :smitten:
-
Reckon you gotta chrome this as you got it for bargain basement price! :daumenhoch:

-
Sod all progress at the mo what with work, and still no closer to deciding what to do with it.. no progress with the forks yet, but as a back up if anyone has any Rickman forks I'm all ears :) oh and thanks to southern Andy for the info on the frame No. :daumenhoch: hopefully will get the rest of the paint off tomorrow (depending on pesky customers lol)
-
spent another few hours today trying to remove the 30 year old powder coat. bit more progress, but will need to wait till my finger prints grow back before the last assault.
frame underneath is pretty mint, the only defets i have found so far are 2x TINY dinks (biggest is maybe 2mm across) will get these Braze filled and smoothed back then just a tidy up of the drop outs and then she is ready for either paint or chrome :smitten:

-
Did you get them from my lead? :daumenhoch:
no mate. fired him a message and no reply, tried to join that group but nothing came of it. he might still get back to me though...

oh and fanks to bigfatolly for the lead on those bars :daumenhoch:
-
awesome find mate , love a rickman meself :smitten:
-
well the bars turned up today......
they are well and truly BANJAXXED! ad read bit of chrome flaking off, could do with powder or re chroming...
the rust is so deep i would be worried about hanging them on the wall let alone riding with them! and to top it off, they have been cut down by an inch ON ONE END ONLY!
:(

Bloody lovley that is mate. :daumenhoch: I am after a twin top tube frame myself now :) Did you manage to get a quote for a rechrome costs ?
-
Not just yet, thinking of maybe even leaving it raw and lacquering it :) although I do seem to have a brake issue..... Got some MX900's but they are too LONG for the front brake/wheel distance? What are anyone else running on the front of one.of these?
-
Coming along nicely that bud , im running dc 880's on mine and they're spot on, the pads sit perfect in middle on front :daumenhoch:
-
cheers for that rick :daumenhoch:
-
these are mx 1000's and they are just about ok , i would have thought 900's may be better :-\

What a great find and good to know that stuff can still turn up although not as often as it used too.
Also reminded me that I have a mini Rickman Freestyler that is raw finish, never been painted/chromed/built that's how I bought it.

Get a picture up mate , I've got 2 mates with mini's and never seen another
-
I would if I knew where it was... had a quick look in the loft but can't see it and that can only mean it is lost in the depths of my garage.
-
a little progress at last :) managed to score a set of bars/redline fork lifter stem combo from t 'bay. arrived this morning, and had a crack at them this evening.
og finish looks much better in the photos, but chipped in places with rust spots starting to show underneath, so i didnt feel bad about taking them back to bare finish. still a bit to go but you get the idea ;)

-
progress made :) after much thought, i went ahead and clear lacquered the frame to show off the beautiful braising :smitten: although i was in two minds about the look until i popped on some of Del's amazing decals and then "POW" it suddenly looked right :)
keeping with the raw and gold(braising) look i got a minty takagi 180 crank, gold Tuf neck power disc, silver ammaco 46t chain wheel and some minty gold Shimano SX's
also repainted the fork lifter stem i got with the bars, just waiting for a new decal and its ready for fitment :)

-
Love the finished look :4_17_5:
-
well! 4 months after i thought i finished it, i have now REALLY finished it! (honest!)
changes since the last time i finished it are:
black 880/901 and cables replaced with full white 880/901 and tech 5's set up with cables to tie in the white AME's and dominator seat.
bendycat Tuff neck style stem in raw finish with potts mod to replace the white race redline forklifter (gold and black tuffneck sticker to match braising and gold details)
Tuf neck chain ring instead of the ammaco to show off the powerdisc properly
raw finish forks to replace the chrome ones so that they match the frame and the bars properly (with DEL decals)
and last but not least, a proper wheel set built by me! proclass modded araya 7X with hi flange sealed JOY hubs, stainless spokes and gold nipples.
oh and gold rim tape.
hope you guys like the finished result as much as i do :daumenhoch:

Why oh why would you ever "smooth out" those beautiful weld beads?
I can't believe y'all approve of that. Really?
I banged my my head against my desk when I saw that first pic.

the welds are not smoothed down at all fella, they are exactly as they were under the paint. they have a coat of clear lacquer over them that makes them look smoother. the whole point was to show the craftsmanship, not ruin it. so put your trousers back on :daumenhoch: :-*

as mattbloke has said , not smoothed out as this isnt welded , its braised , its a different process....
-
as mattbloke has said , not smoothed out as this isnt welded , its braised , its a different process....
My apologies. I should have read the thread instead of posting that hasty reply after just looking at the pictures. This pic in particular made it look to me that you ground down the welds and put in some filler material...
Brazed, not welded that's interesting. Do / did these frames hold up to some abuse?
-
now that your trousers are back on ;) braising unlike tig welding, dosent super heat the metal at the join. with a TiG welded frame, if it snaps its always either side of the weld, not the weld itself as the welding makes the tubing so hot that it actually changes the properties of the tubing. Braising is a much lower temperature, and dosnt change the materials structure. The braise also has some flex in it, the the joint will not just snap. if it does fail, its the braise itself that snaps which can then be simply melted off and re done. the real craftsmanship is UNDER the braising as the joint has to be perfectly fitted without gaps. hence why all braised items are truly hand made.
-
you were right to clearcoat it , its foookin lovely :smitten:
-
superb rescue and build... :daumenhoch:
this does make me want a twin tube in the line up...
hmmm now what would be a good TT ?
A Torker LPX maybe ;D
^"^
-
Yes Matt!I loved this build before and did not think it could be improved upon much but you have done a great job with those tweaks-subtle but very effective! The power disc and ring looks waaaay better!the wheels are the titties! I am still making tweaks to the PR a year after I thought it was finished, results soon!! :daumenhoch:
-
