First post here on your great forum guys. I was directed to your little bmx oasis by another member here who caught wind of my little project on the bmxmuseum.com and decided to share it here with y'all here. To post the whole thing would be far too tedius, so this will be the abridged version. Enjoy!
Nicole Kidman's 1983 SuperMaX BMX BANDITS replica build!
So Ive decided for my next bike build Ill be doing, yep, another SuperMaX. This time around Im going to be replicating Judys (Nicole Kidman) Malvern Star SuperMaX from Brian Trenchard-Smiths 1983 classic BMX BANDITS. Ive seen quite a few great replicas of Goose and PJs Diamondback and Supergoose on the museum, but I havent yet seen an accurate SuperMaX, which I think is un-Australian! So I thought Id give it a burl and see what I can come up with.
Heres a short clip from the flick that for the best part shows Judys SuperMaX in action!

Here's what I've managed to collect so far for the build.

So. As you can see the build is going spectacularly and is pretty much complete. All that's left to collect is a NOS Tange 24t BB, chrome Nitto post and yellow Tuff pads. Let me know if any of you can help contribute to the build. Thanks!
Started to put the various bits together:

I also recently bought this little gem. An original 1983 movie poster, which I'll frame to display with the bike, once the bike is finished!
Pretty cool. No?
You can veiw the original in its entirety here:

Thanks guys!
I recieved the NOS Kashimax from WaspMoth in the mail last week, which is awsome, and decided to lay everything out to see what's left on the list. Looks like all that's left is a BB and seat pole. I'm still on the look out for a good anodizer who can do the right shade of gold. So in consideration there's really not much left to do at all. Super excited to finish this thing off!

Where did you get that shit Kashi Aero...?!!!! ;D Hi Trent, glad you finally joined! :daumenhoch:
-
Trent, just to go off topic a little, but do you remember a TV show made in Aus in the early 80's called Home? ??? :daumenhoch:
-
It might be a stretch too far for my memory. I grew up in the ninties so I got a lot of 80's re-runs but never came across that one. Unless you mean Home and Away?
-
Trent, just to go off topic a little, but do you remember a TV show made in Aus in the early 80's called Home? ??? :daumenhoch:
Lol Dan was it Paul Robinson's Starion that made you think of that show?
I remember it mate http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085683/

Trent, just to go off topic a little, but do you remember a TV show made in Aus in the early 80's called Home? ??? :daumenhoch:
I remember that - there was quite a bit of racing in it. The lad racing was advised to keep his bike low to win but he got big air and won anyway 8)
-
It was about some Aussie kids in a childrens 'Home', they built their own BMX track, don't know any more about it, but I could sing you the theme tune. ::) :daumenhoch:
-
wasnt it called home is where the heart is or was that the theme tune??ive been trying to find stuff on this show for yonks cos of the bmx stuff
-
If Demonoid was still up and running, you would have got it from there :( I miss that site :yahoo_silent:
-
The theme tune went home, home, home on the other side, it don't matter if I'm down cos I know I'm gonna be alright, you gotta roll with the punches, got to give and take
Don't recall anything else.

then it goes 'home, home is where the heart is' in a bryan adams type stylie

I rememer that too & that's what I can remember from the theme tune. This is all I could find about it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085683/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085683/)
You can't beat an innocent thread dragged down into the dirt by Rad members. I'm surprised it took so long. Love it ;D

Anyway enough of this thread-diverting nonsense, where can I get some Tim Tams?
-
OMG TimTams!
Back on track with the build! I had quite a bit of touble tracking down a set of chain ring fixing bolts that'll fit the added chain-guard disk, but I finally found a set. Or at least I hope they'll do the trick. So they're on their way soon. Can't wait! I do still need a hand tracking done a NOS TANGE 24 BB set and NITTO chrome post. If anyone has a lead on either please get in touch 'cause I super keen to take this bad boy girl for a ride!
-
If you nibble the ends off a Tim Tam they can be used as a kind of straw for hot drinks or milk
The biscuit part starts to dissolve into a delicious mush
I've tried it using other biscuits but Tim Tams are probably the best
-
Got a couple more pics of the parts up close. Thought that it might help keep you all keen!

Now we're just waiting on the NOS Tange BB to turn up and also on a new Tange seat clamp, as the last one doesn't fit the seat mast. Boo-urns! I'm looking forward to getting stuck right into this iconic Aussie ride!
-
Looking forward to seeing it, I've seen the other 2 done but not this one yet. :daumenhoch:

Gremlins ate the pics! So here they are again.

Wow! Really looking forward to seeing this finished......... :daumenhoch:
-
Here's both the NOS Tange BB and head set. So I just need to get the guard anodized, re-do the fork decals and wait on that replacement clamp. I've sent the poster off to get framed and might have scored an OG ET poster as well!

Looks ace so far mate, I was going to mention the fork decal. Looks sweet all the same. :coolsmiley: :daumenhoch:
-
Yeah, finding a pair of NOS SuperMax forks is next to impossible, unless you find a f/f. So I guess I'll have to do something about that too. I recieved the new clamp today and it's unreal, to say the least. So that's pretty much it, I'll be able to make a start on it this weekend. You beauty!

I've actually never seen BMX bandits, but that will change soon
Mrs griff let me open my birthday pressie a day early and it's a DVD copy
Will keep a look out for 'your' bike ;)
-
It's a terrible film Griff......but great all at the same time :daumenhoch:
-
Palm ID and say 'kssssk' a lot. Ace film. :4_17_5:
-
I usually mut it and listen to my record collection while I watch it, stopping to pause it occasionally for cool cars or related bike stuff. I find it much more enjoyable that way. Does anyone else want to ring gooses neck, he sounds like a flaming gallah!
I got most of the build done today before the weather turned sour. Pretty happy with how its turned out thus far, even with a few minor set backs during the build. I managed to get the poxy seat clamp to fit quite nicely in the end and then had to finese the KSM guts onto the Nitto post but that was about it for problems. I've still got to set up the rear brake, which can't be done to the chain and wheel are set. I also need to get some axle nuts for the tuffs and track down some yellow tuff pads. Then the fun part, doing the fork decals and re-anodizing the chain guard.
I'll do a proper photoshoot when she's all together. Till then that's all you get. Sorry.
-
Hey guys,
The bike is looking great and is well on the way to completion. I've also just bought a set of original Tuffs to swap out futher down the track. I'm also on the look out for a matching helmet that Nicole wore in the flick, I have discovered that the original is a CENTURION 150 helmet. I haven't had any luck this side of the pond so far, knowing that this is a UK Manufacturer maybe someone here might be able to point me in the right direction better than in Aus. I'm after a yellow helmet with the matching silver strips in either NOS or Mint condition, just like in the pictures. It looks like they rubbed off the Centurion logo on the screen used helmet, for copyright reasons and such. I'd really love to have a matching helmet to hang off the bike once it's finished. So please let me know if you know of one hanging up in a closet or sitting idle in a collection somewhere. I've already drawn up the custom pinstriping in anticipation. Thanks!

Spot on mate.

check here for your yellow tuff brake pads..... :daumenhoch:

-
whoops out of stock! :-[
-
Thanks merticulous, I checked there aleeady and they're out as you said. No matter, I've bought a cheap set of stand ins for the time being while I attempt to track them down. Does anyone have the goss on those centurion helmets, were they a common thing bitd or will it be hard to track one down?
-
I just recieved the "team cyle" brake-pads today in the post, and I'm actually a bit disappointed with the quality. But I guess that's what you should expect from Taiwanese parts. They'll do for riders, at least - untill my new tuffs turn up. I've been trying to hang off from posting pics until the bike is complete, but I guess another one won't kill me. Here she is at the moment, currently without chain and chain-guard. The fork stickers still need to be sourced, the chain-guard is still waiting to be anodized and I'm sorting out some OG Tuff II mags as well. So close, but still a long way to go. Enjoy!
-
Nice...
-
Here's the OG Tuffs that'll eventually be replacing the new sealed bearing tuffs. They're not NOS like I set out for, but from what I've seen they're close to. Cheers Eugene! Obviously the rear will have to be changed over to a free-wheel, so I'm looking into that. I'll post some pics once they've arrived. Lastly, I'll be after a set of NOS Mitsuboshi comp 3 tyres and presta tubes to finish her off!
-
Tuffs arrived today, so I decided to give them a thorough good clean. I'm absolutely stoked with how the came up, really - much better than I could have expected. I stripped out the guts, then degreased both the hubs and wheels and left them to dry out. Once they dried out, I went over them with the Chux magic sponge to erase all but the most stubborn of stains. After hours of scrubbing I gave them both a couple coats of Mothers plastic/rubber restorer to bring out the original colour and eliminate that chalkyness you get with old Tuffs. After all that, I don't think I ever want to see another pair of Tuffs ever again! Now they're ready for Waza to work his magic on them.
-
Nice build, is that Supermax just a Scorpion frame with no gusset?
-
sounds a brilliant build but are some of the pics missing or is it just me
-
I don't think so... perhaps. I will look into it.
Burt Bacharach!
Quick little update! The new, old Tuffs are back from Waza - who swapped the original steel hub flanges over to match the alloy hub flanges on Nicoles SuperMaX. I am absolutely stoked with how they came up, there was a lot of time spent scrubbing on my part. You just cant keep the bloody things clean, can you? I must have cleaned them four or so times before the end. But I think youll all agree that the results were well worth the effort. Theyre still not NOS mags but for a set of used 80s Tuffs Id be surprised to see a better set of yellow Tuffs that havent been blasted, sanded or dyed/painted. Big thanks to Eugene for hooking me up with these awesome Tuffs along with various other schwag for this build and also to Waza, who did an incredible job changing over the hubs! Thanks guys!
So that just leaves it down to anodizing the chain-guard, printing out the missing stickers and building her up. Also, in other news the OG 1983 movie poster came back from being framed up all pretty, and it looks awesome! Check it out. I cant wait to hang it over the finished bike should make for a cool display. What do you think?
-
The framed poster finishes the project of nicely :4_17_5:
How did Waz change to flanges are they glued on ? :) Good enough for a show build I know , because you won't be riding it
Wondering just incase he'd made some tooling for re -riveting the super long rivets :) he'd get loads of custom I'm sure :)
-
Nah, he's got an original rivet press. I could bunny hop the shiat outta those puppies!
-
They are the same frames, I did a bit of digging:
http://bmxsociety.com/topic/54364-lugged-bmx-frame-with-brass-rings/
-
Happy Holidays everyone!
Yes and then, no. The crown luggs on the Scorpians are different to the Australian Stars. If you're after a closer frame look up Kuwahara and Apollo.
It's been a while since I last updated the build and I'm sorry to say not much has changed. I did finally manage to "temporarily" fit Eugene's tuffs to the beast, as I'm having a bit of trouble squeezing them between the fork dropouts. I'll give it a better look over tomorrow arvo, to see what is to be done. Stickers are drawn up and ready to print, aside from the black and chrome standardized sticker. If anyone has either a scan or a new one let me know, cheers. Still have to have the guard plated and that's about it! The new year's resolution is to have her done to take out the January Bike of the Month award on OZBMX, lol!

Hey guys,
No news on the bike front, I've been tinkering a bit with my P.K. so the Nicole special has been collecting dust. I'm still desperately searching for a Centurion 150 helmet in yellow, let me know if anyone can help me out there. I found most of these pics while searching google. The ebay seller who posted the pics f335-challenge is located in the UK and has a few bmx parts for sale, so I was hoping some-one here might recognize the username, or maybe he is a member. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

The peak is different but you should be able to get the right decals knocked up to match.

Cheers Chop! It does look fairly similar but it's actually a whole lot different from the 150, but thanks. :daumenhoch:

love to cave nicoles back doors in.... :bondage:

You can have the back door and i will have the front door >:D

Cool build - nice one :daumenhoch:
-
Love this build. I used to have one of those Centurion lids when I was a kid but in black. They were manufactured down the road from me in Thetford, Norfolk; I believe the factory is still there.
-
Nice one Trent, love the detailing and the extra mile you're going with the lid etc. :coolsmiley: :coolsmiley:
-
Cheers guys! Yesterday I finally got the Tuffs on there properly and set the back wheel in place, chain and all. I took the chain guard off so it could be anodized, hopefuly this week sometime. All the missing stickers are drawn up and ready to be printed. It's sheer laziness that this thing hasn't been finished yet!
-
Sorry for neglecting you guys!
Here's what I've been doing whilst begging and praying for an original gold chain-ring guard. I've been collecting little bits and pieces of BMX BANDITS movie paraphernalia. So far I've got the picture book, Japanese theatre playbook and a score of original lobby cards from the film's original 1983 cinema release. As well as my orignal US release 1 sheet movie poster. I've got an original VHS tape with box cover in the post and am looking at buying a couple more original release movie posters from other countries. I've also got my fingers crossed for an original Centurion 150 helmet. I'll have to get back to you guys about that one. Also I've got a great guy doing some SuperMax decals so I can finish off the bike. But that's as much as I can do until I get the guard. I've got 200 big ones here for whoever finds me a NOS gold chain-ring guard!
Like this but only gold!

Well, I recieved my original 1983 VHS tape in the post the ohter day. Not really directly related to the build per say, but hey. I say it is, so enjoy! I also managed to get an original chain-ring guard. Not NOS but good enough to work with. I'll post it off to the anodizer tomorrow. Still waiting on some stickers and that's it!

Awesome feat. Hoping someday you manage to get the pic of the bike together with Nicole on it :daumenhoch: :smitten:

Great idea...........she does like to get naked nowadays :smitten:

She should become member of Radbmx, really - she is a person of significance to bmx history after all. We'll discuss till she forgets herself and starts contributing to babe of the day .... oooohoo :smitten:

I won't be holding my breath!
Back on track! Something has happened to the bike. I'm incredulous! After much procrastination, a lot of time spent searching the web and a bit of luck; she’s now got a shiny new chain-ring guard. Benny1 (ozBMX) did an amazing job with the anodizing. The colour match to a NOS original guard it is near enough to call perfect. He has really done a bang up job this time. Thanks Ben!

You should get some outside shots and put this in bike of the month on here.
I think Clint would love one of these double butted frames :)

Love this project although I've gone grey since it started... ::)
Well done for sticking with it :daumenhoch:
-
Thanks guys!
It sure has taken its time hasn't it. But if you're going to do it you may as well do it right and that takes time.
-
Cool build all you need to top it off http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1980s-Big-Hair-Perm-Fancy-Dress-Wig-Inc-FREE-Wig-Cap-/400478397334?pt=UK_Women_s_fancy_Dress&hash=item5d3e5f6396

I certainly would, Seen a few on oz ebay but i think they are all afraid of the post office over there :(
Cracking build Ben :4_17_5:
really nice to see the effort put in on what others may class as not entirely top end :daumenhoch:

Cheers guys!
I had a little bit of trouble posting lately and I had to re-register with the forum. Yeah, that would be something wouldn't it.
Well I finally procured the proverbial icing for the delicous metaphorical cake that is this radical bike. It's not Nicole but a NOS Centurion helmet, just like Nic's one. Can't wait to get this in hand so I can try it at the pin striping on the back.

Love looking at this build and the history that goes with it :smitten:
-
incredible !! top work keep it coming :4_17_5:

Cheers fellas! :daumenhoch:
I've promised myself to a proper full blown photo shoot when she's all done. I'm now only waiting on the helmet in the royale mail and someone who will print my stickers! Why is it so bloody hard to click print? I'm also after a NOS Haro visor in yellow for the crash hat. Keep you posted!
-
one with Nicole would be nice :smitten:
-
C'mon fellas I'm not made of money here. Best I can do on my budget would be Antonia Kidman! :2funny:
Well I was hoping for some real sun for a change, unfortunately bloody Melbourne weather disagrees! Here's the NOS Centurion 150 crash hat fitted with NOS Centurion goggles, for giggles. Pretty darn cool if I don't say so myself. It's a size S but I can still squeeze it on my pin head even with the mop. Looks bloody sill though!
(http://i1072.photobucket.com/albums/w366/HotfootHero/BMX%20BANDITS%20Bike/Nichelmet_zpsddc694e2.jpg) (http://s1072.photobucket.com/user/HotfootHero/media/BMX%20BANDITS%20Bike/Nichelmet_zpsddc694e2.jpg.html)'
Now I've just got to sort out a Haro Bubble visor to cap it off! Remind me to pick up some black one-shot paint as well.
-
cool :daumenhoch:
-
Looking forward to seeing the 'It's finished!' pic :daumenhoch:
-
It's not too far off now! Just gotta print some stickers and pinstripe the helmet and it's finito!
Alright! So, BMXMUSEUM really pulled through for me once more! I just recieved my Haro bubble visor, just like Nicole's! I was initially planning on peeling back the sticker to accurately match Nic's, but I just can't do it. The thing is practically NOS! All I need now are Nicole's nickers, whoops I mean stickers, for the forks.
