Title: WAL Riot resto
Post by: ED209 on October 06, 2012, 09:00 PM
Thanks to Olly MBDH I finally got my sticky hands on a WAL  :smitten:

Its in real good condition apart from a few rust spots and needing a good clean ...

Don't want this to be an immaculate show pony ... I want to ride it but most of all use as many parts original to the bike ... but with a bit of a twist to make it mine  :daumenhoch:

Arrived like this ...  ( just stuck my OGKs on to wheel it around )

I've got some decals and a bashguard direct from Ron W. ... WAL San Quentin bars from Joe HBoost ... so its on the way already.

All the other parts will come from my semi built Big Boy  :daumenhoch:

Stripped it and hit the spray oil and fine steel wool last night ... then peeked it for a good hour  :)

Finally got to put these decals on as I have wanted to stick them on my Big Boy for weeks ... glad I waited  :daumenhoch:

Looking good. Just chrome the forks and be done with it. RS do an awesome job and the cost wont be that big a deal when you take into account the cost of the entire build (well at least thats what I always tell myself).  :LolLolLolLol:

Seriously though, before you spend loads trying to find all kinds of coloured parts you need to at least get a price on chroming the forks. Cant hurt to enquire, and will open up a lot more options in the build IMO.  :daumenhoch:

never thought of that... cheers Spen  :daumenhoch:

 ;D

gonna try black, then red, then maybe chrome if nought else works.

Not sure how perfect chrome forks would sit on an imperfect frame though.

I've got most of those parts Jon so its just a question of building  :)

Working on it now...

( PS. need to speak to you about fixing bolts for the bash Jon  :daumenhoch: )

I used a coach bolt for the front mounting. A regular bolt (as was originally supplied) kinks the cable pretty bad so I didnt want to do that. The coach bolt sits pretty flush so works perfect.

For the rear it was an absolute nightmare. The thread in there is US thread and absolutely no where had a bolt that fitted. I had to dig in 3 mates garages until I found a bolt that went in there. Id suggest digging out all the US made parts you can find like stems, seat clamps, etc, that have US sized allen heads and go from there. Hopefully one of them will have a matching thread. :daumenhoch:

PS: Everyone needs to back away from those cranks and chainwheel.  :2gunsfiring_v1:   :LolLolLolLol:

You'll need more than 1 pot of Pot of peek to make the forks look chrome Ed. ;D
Looks pretty cool though but can't decide if I like this or the Big Boy more  ???

I've just had a thought looking at your wal frame and forks with the decals on. You could always get del to make you up some custom decals that are similar to the downtube design. But with chrome stripes Instead of black. Still have the wal in yellow though. A bit of a cheat but you will lose the colour change. And it wouldn't cost a fortune to try. Anyway I might be wrong what do you lot think?  :daumenhoch:

I think that would look sweet!  They also did a variant with red stripes and yellow text didnt they?  That'd look cool too :)

They were yellow and red stripes with white text.  :daumenhoch: Would look good on those black forks for sure.  8)

Post by: Discostu on October 07, 2012, 09:00 PM
The wal txt doesn't. Have to be yellow. It could be white or red. But if there were some chrome stripes the blackness of the forks could be lost. I think it's one of those things that you wouldn't be able to tell until its done. But I'm sure it's worth ago as its only some fork decals at the end of the day. Anyway we will see if ed likes the idea. It's his ride.  :daumenhoch:

Thanks for the advice Jon ... did as you said an it was all sweeeet.

found a coach bolt but it had the square base under it ... filed that off and it was a great fit.

Took your advice on threads and thought 'US' ... I had this crappy old Schwinn out the back and took the plastic top cap off the stem ( 1 1/8th forks ) and the allen bolt from that fitted perfectly  :daumenhoch:

After my success with the bash I got the cranks back on and I'n just getting some 2.0 black Panaracers on my wheels to see what they are like ... the red DXs look hot too ...

Good thoughts on the decals peeps... if the forks were red i could use the decals I have got ... and red was a WAL colour  :daumenhoch:

think I'm gonna try red for the forks to match the red peds and top tube decal  :) gives it a bit of a twist - gonna spray em up to see if it works then send em to Dan  :)

For all the seat haters it will get replaced  ;D ... a Dominator or a GT I reckon - GT to be true to the build.

Just got a Bulldog on the front @ the mo. hoping the previos owner can dig out the silver Boa...  :daumenhoch:

the decals I have don't work over black Rob... so I'm gonna strip the forks and rattle them red to see how they look - then decide..  :)  then its off to Dan for black or red powder... or yellow  ::) or chrome  :buck2: who knows  :D

I reckon it needs red forks to justify the red peds... otherwise they look a bit isolated perhaps :-\

I like the red forks. For me Riots always looked very punk rock / vision street wear with their stripes and red / yellow / black decals. Because of this I think thinks like red forks or pedals look really at home on a bike like this. It doesnt work on other brands but on a WAL I think it looks spot on.  :daumenhoch:
